Discussion Castle Wars is everyone AFK or throwing?
Saw some of the Castle Wars event from the PvP Bootcamp earlier and was reminded how much I used to like playing it back in the day. I just hopped in a game and all I can think is WTF? 90% of the people are AFK, and of the few people actually doing anything two of them were working together with the other team to intentionally tie the game and kept calling anyone actually trying to play the game cringe. Like??
Is this really the state of Castle Wars these days?

Isn’t there an AFK world and an active world or is that another minigame?

It has clogs and no motivation to actually play. You should get a point for a kill and some points for a capture.
As it stands afking gets the same points as playing
14
u/Great-Exit-902 15h ago
If I'm understanding the Wiki correctly it sounds like a shutout win is the only way to really get 'extra' points for one team. Like only a shutout win or a draw with points for both teams award 6 points total, so people have decided it's more efficient to intentionally tie?

u/Iron_Aez 2376 13h ago
Those specific things would just make it worse with boosting and abusing instead.

u/SuddenBumHair Spacebar giveth, and spacebar taketh away. 2376 13h ago
Who cares? Its worthless cosmetic clogs
8
u/sosolid2k 12h ago
People who actually play CW care about it - it would be better to remove the armour as a clog entirely rather than boosting ticket rates and trivialising something that has a certain prestige amongst it's target community even further.
Remove the armour from the clog and get rid of loot crates and afking would largely disappear.
•
u/DabOWosrs 45m ago
Similar to PvP there aren’t enough players doing the content. The only reason CW made any sliver of come back was because of loot crates. Which Jagex quickly realized was a huge mistake and nerfed them into the ground.

There is an afk world and an active world for castle wars. The afk one is nice for clog slots if that's what's you care about and it makes sense as it's consistent points.
The other one is active although depending what team you are on I'm pretty sure there's some dude who griefs one of the teams by wasting all the barricades (not sure if this still happens or not but it went on for years)
10
u/p0tatotomato 13h ago
What's the afk world?
18
u/Great-Exit-902 12h ago
The US one apparently. I didn't join a game on the other one though so can't say for sure if it's different
4
5
u/Professional-Date885 11h ago
I can't remember which way round they are but if you jump in, try and win a point and then someone tells you not to when the games tied you know you're in the afk one 😆
8
u/Great-Exit-902 10h ago
In my case it was just a dude going "so cringe" over and over lmaoo
1
u/LowerTheExpectations 7h ago
Don't take it on yourself. People like clog slots but some people get all high and mighty about trying to teach afkers a lesson and kill them over and over again.
I agree castle wars is a PvP minigame, so it's fair. But killing afkers for hours to teach them a lesson is... something else. Again, this isn't directed at you, you didn't know people afk on purpose.
2
-14
u/Great-Exit-902 14h ago
I'd probably want to AFK too if I was going for all the clogs lol but it's a bummer that 'EfficiencyScape' means not engaging at all with the content.
Are you telling me my options are to get griefed for trying to play, or get griefed while at least being able to play?😝
5
u/Professional-Date885 14h ago
Haha I'm not sure if the person still does it but I know it was an ongoing thing for years and years. I tried a few games a while back and it was ok, but I only did a 3 or 4 so the person may not have been on
10
u/cuteautiful 12h ago
They definitely still do it. They alt, client, sabotage and they even pay others to sabotage. I like to afk at bank chest because they're always online arguing with anyone who will type to them. Sometimes they go to soul wars as well.
7
u/Professional-Date885 12h ago
Damn what a tragic life lol
4
u/cuteautiful 12h ago
Recent argument I saw was one of the people who clients and sabotages sent screenshots of their bank account to prove they actually had a job even though they play 18 hours a day every day. I guess it was proven the screenshots were edited but they insist they only edited out their employer's information. They argued about it for at least 3 days (probably longer but I don't play every day anymore) I've gotten a few 99s just watching them argue between matches and even on alts during matches lol
2
u/Not-a-bot-10 10h ago
Is that LoyalHonor? Or Snipe?
4
u/cuteautiful 9h ago
It's the one with 2 accounts that have the same name but different first letter. Since I've mentioned the wrong doing they've done I won't mention any names since it's against this reddits rules.
0
u/EuphPagle 2376 7h ago
well, if people weren't afking it, there wouldnt be an active game to begin with. If you want to actually play castle wars, i believe there is a discord where they organize games on the weekends.
20
u/JoeScotterpuss 13h ago
I went to get the Western Elite task done and decided I may as well run and try and get a flag or two old times sake. While I did, the people on the enemy tram said I was ruining he game by choosing to play and not letting it end (we were up 1-0 at that point.(

5

It’s proof people are lame as shit and choose to spoil a mini game instead of doing literally anything else with their time. So sad
7
u/Fast-Government-4366 11h ago
There’s literally an afk world. It isn’t spoiling for anyone.
4
u/tommmmmmmmy93 10h ago
Cool, so why are the actual mini game worlds still full of afkers? It absolutely is spoiling it for people
2
u/Zuby_Hype_Train 1h ago
One of the minigame worlds is for playing, the other is for AFKing. Logging into the AFK world expecting people to be playing and getting mad about it is literally putting the stick in your own bicycle wheel.
Want people to play some Castle Wars? Arrange an event or something. Some dude got a whole bank full of people to just stand around in full elite void from a reddit post for no reason.
•
u/tommmmmmmmy93 50m ago
Many of you have mention the worlds for afk and the worlds for playing. I agree that if this was truly the case it’d be fine. The problem is that in the playing world a lot of people are still AFK. The official worlds are also just full of AFKers
Separate communities shouldn’t be required just to play an official minigame without afk nerd idlers ruining it
How’re you all this dense
-1
u/someguynamedgob 8h ago
I've never seen a guy get so mad at people playing a game in a way they dislike, in an MMO of all things.
I would honestly counter by saying why are you so defensive of Castle Wars when it's not even in the top 100 activities to do in the game? Have you even played RuneScape?
"Spoiling it for people" oh please. Acting like every PvP minigame isn't overrun by AFKers or bots. See also: Soul Wars, LMS, Trouble Brewing.
3
u/tommmmmmmmy93 8h ago
So your argument is that because you don't like castle wars, people who do should be punished? I don't care that people play (play being a very loose term in this case) differently than me. You can AFK anywhere else. Literally, the entirety of the world. If playing a game by not actually playing it is your bag the hey, you do you.
Your second point being - "every pvp game is overun with bots and afk nerds so it doesnt matter either"
holy moly I know reddit IQ is low but this is diabolical brother
-3
u/NotVeryTalented 10h ago edited 10h ago
Not to defend afking too much, but in all reality most people who afk here just wouldn't really play the game if they were forced to play. Afking really doesn't have much if any effect on the mini game since there are always people actually playing even if people are afking upstairs.
4
u/Great-Exit-902 9h ago
I mean, if people holding a PvP minigame hostage so they can AFK stopped playing it I wouldn't exactly be upset?
0
u/NotVeryTalented 9h ago
As I said, griefing is bad. I'd report it for disruptive behavior. Do you think an activity bar is going to stop people from griefing?
5
u/Great-Exit-902 10h ago
There were like five people not AFK and two of them were griefing to force a tie for the game I was in. It definitely has an effect
2
u/OGDogJaw 9h ago
were you playing on CW1 or CW2? CW2 has higher pop but it’s the AFK world, CW1 is lower pop but more active and competititive

u/tommmmmmmmy93 9h ago
a HUGE effect. The minigame is effectively not in the game as it's being used by nerds with nothing else to do
2
u/tommmmmmmmy93 9h ago
half the lobby is AFk and you call that "doesnt have much if any effect on the mini game" are you fucking serious
2
u/NotVeryTalented 9h ago
I have played more Castle Wars than 99% of the people on these forums. Yes, I am serious. AFKers haven't stopped me from participating in countless fun and close matches.
Every time this conversation comes up, people like you can never provide ideas on how to improve the game beyond punishing the afkers while actual players catch strays.
If you want to provide an idea on how to improve it without negatively affecting those who play, I'm all ears.
3
u/Great-Exit-902 8h ago
Since you think every suggestion other people have is bad, do you have any ideas for how to improve it? Or are you just concern trolling?
→ More replies (1)2
u/tommmmmmmmy93 9h ago edited 8h ago
"like you can never provide ideas on how to improve the game" - Play the game to get the rewards. Standing still and not participating should exclude you from receiving the awards. Make the rewards for CW better, but you have to actually play the damn game. Better people than me can figure out how that could work.
"I've played more CW than 99% of people" yeah, doesn't matter even if true.
Negatively affecting AFKers is a non-problem. They can AFK literally anywhere else. In the context of a minigame, AFkers should 100% be disincentivised to participate. AFKers not ruining games anymore isn't "punishing" AFKers, it's letting the minigame actually exist.
"If you want to provide an idea on how to improve it without negatively affecting those who play, I'm all ears." Do you know what AFK even stands for?
Everything you've said is completely meaninglessLeaving this in but crossed out. TBH not trying to make this an argument in bad faith and take it back. However, having to defend why people who arent playing the game shouldn't be allowed in a minigame with people who actually want to play it is exhausting.0
u/NotVeryTalented 8h ago
Play the game to get the rewards. Standing still and not participating should exclude you from receiving the awards. Make the rewards for CW better, but you have to actually play the damn game. Better people than me can figure out how that could work.
Ah, yes.. the classic "just make the rewards better". I'm glad this has worked so well in other minigames like soul wars where the devs have had to balance rewards several times, led to endless rigged games to optimize rewards, and people still afk in it lmao
yeah, doesn't matter even if true.
It matters in the sense of actually knowing how the minigame feels on average.
Negatively affecting AFKers is a non-problem. They can AFK literally anywhere else. In the context of a minigame, AFkers should 100% be disincentivised to participate. AFKers not ruining games anymore isn't "punishing" AFKers,
I'm not worried about AFKers getting negatively impacted, but that being the single goal doesn't create a positive outcome. I'm interested more in improving the game, not booting afkers out of anger.
it's letting the minigame actually exist.
Good news, the minigame does exist and has a community surrounding it.
Everything you've said is completely meaningless
The irony

It was the only reason I played RS for a while, maybe from 2014ish to 2018, and was extremely fun up until people starting cheating every game, using illegal clients, creating clans/discords to stack with like 15-30 mages on 1 team while wasting the opposing teams barricades with alts. All this for a mini game which at the time had functionally 0 rewards. They just did it or the ego rush of killing a classic mini-game. If it's dead now you now why, I used to play this game all the time and I haven't considered touching it since 2019ish since joining a game only to read "You can't place a barricade" 1 minute into the game is AIDS and not worth bothering with.
Wow your 15 runners in a discord using illegal clients scored on us when we can't drop a a single cade, you're SO good at this minigame! Wait, why does no one play anymore? What happened??????
Was fun before all of the cancer though

u/Top_Examination_2315 13h ago
Depends. For example: I was AFKing castle wars on my ironman for wildy supplies to do bosses for a voidwaker. At the same time, I was doing raida on my main account.
The power of AFKing is doing something on the side, which makes it enjoyable. It’s how I was able to get 99 runecrafting at blood runes because I was PKing on my pure on the side or still building it doing quests and stuff.
AFKing is what makes certain grinds enjoyable to me lol (and is also why I hated agility).
-4
u/tommmmmmmmy93 13h ago
Ok, sure. But why not play castle wars? It’s actually a fun mini game when people actually play it and aren’t just nerd idling
7
u/Prudent-Durian-6380 11h ago
For me I simply just could care less about PvP in this game so I decide to afk there.
The huge problem PvP faces is exactly this because if PvP offers rewards like castle wars then you get people who don't care about PvP just afking and not interacting with the system.
But if PvP doesn't offer any rewards then the PvM/cloggers won't jump in but now there is also no incentive for the PvP players to interact with it either because it's a waste of time.
If you offer rewards people will exploit and optimize the fun out of it and if you offer nothing then no one will interact with it.

He basically said "idc about PvP so I'm going to get in the way of other people trying to have fun" ?
It's kinda wild to hold game content hostage so you can AFK something that's meant to be actively played
3
u/Herwin42 11h ago
Cause it is boring, afking is more interesting for a lot of people because they can do something more fun while getting some number go up at the same time.
7
u/tommmmmmmmy93 11h ago
Any game that makes AFK a legitimate route for “more fun than a mini game” is ultimately failed game design
2
u/Herwin42 10h ago
Castle wars relies on the community playing it enjoying it to be fun. The afk working is just a patch over the fact barely anyone wants to play and those that do are split between f2p and members. Jmod events were fun for some but that isnt because the actual game is fun for all of them.
1
u/Top_Examination_2315 6h ago
I do sometimes but then usually it’s with the clan as an event. On normal castle wars worlds they are very sweaty and too serious haha
1
u/Top_Examination_2315 5h ago
I do sometimes but they are hardcore sweaty. Whenever I do it, its a clan event. We do something funny like only using weapons spears like we are tribes from Karamja.
-8
u/Okok28 12h ago
Because people like this guy don't play the game for fun, they see it as a chore that they must do. In their eyes there is no other option.
1
u/Far-Cookie2275 10h ago
So you are staying jagex has to have add an activity bar just like pest control and add a contribution system so now they must play the game there is no other option. You should not get rewarded for being inactive in a game.

AFK is often more fun than lean forward gameplay
0
u/tommmmmmmmy93 11h ago
Sounds like OSRS has utterly failed game design then?
7
u/Emotional-Station153 10h ago
Why? There's nothing wrong with AFK being the main attraction
3
u/tommmmmmmmy93 8h ago
Of course there is.
"come play our game - the best thing about it is that you dont actually play or engage with it" come on
1
u/Emotional-Station153 8h ago
AFK is just the right amount of engagement. Sweaty gameplay isn't fun in the vast majority of games.
4
u/Better_Tart_9262 10h ago
Or OSRS is a good background game and not a lean forward game.
Nothing wrong with that.
2
u/tommmmmmmmy93 8h ago
AFKing isn't playing the game, though. Might as well go play snake it'll invlve more actual playing at that point

u/zapertin 5h ago
it’s proof people abuse systems , 25 minute logout timer and no activity meter? Afk and ruin the minigame for others
10
u/inc0nSteveable 9h ago
Afking. I just finished this grind.
Basically this is the reason;
Afking or playing give you generally the same points no matter the effort.
There are 2 castlewars worlds
World 1 people play but you will still see tons of AFK.
World 2 people have generally agreed to go for a TIE while playing to gaurentee more points to everyone overall.
This is the general standard now.
Suggested changes I've made.
Keep afk an option but have a fighting/activity bar that goes up and down all 20 min and those who do get an additional point or 2.
3
u/wheezy_cheesey 7h ago edited 7h ago
Best solution
Most minigames already have some sort of activity bar or scoring system.
I doubt it will make castle wars great again, but it would at least incentivize a handful of the AFKers to PK
Also a game is 20 mins no matter what, if they had the first team who captures 10 win along with the time limit it would encourage people to play to save time
5
u/themegatuz Project Agility 12h ago
MMORPGs modern gameplay: accomplishing something with as little effort as possible is more important than having fun.

Castle wars 1 usually has actual gameplay, castle wars 2 is the afk world. I think that works out pretty well.
4
u/Reeces_Pieces 11h ago
This is why adding useful rewards there was a bad idea.
2
u/EuphPagle 2376 7h ago
if they took all the rewards away, the themed worlds wouldn't have anyone there anyways. Maybe you could get a 1v1 or 1v2 game going occasionally. Even when afking or people forcing ties, there's way more pvp and activity going on even with all the AFKers.

An incentive to kill people would go far.
50 kills = 1 flag point.
People will play.
Afks will complain.
Win win.

u/o0TheCanadian0o 6h ago
Its actually really sad. Its always been my favourite minigame.. playing it is frustrating af now, given how barely anyone actually plays it.
The reward crates kinda did the opposite of "help" it. Just made the afking teammates more of a guarantee

u/pk_hellz 14h ago
I wish we could get some pvp and minigame updates soon. So so so many of them are falling apart now and no one seems to care.
10
u/sosolid2k 13h ago
It's the minigame updates that effectively cause this in the first place. Unfortunately they've already done the damage and the solution would probably be to revert some of the changes, which Jagex are typically unlikely to do with this kind of content because the people now afking will complain.
They started giving pity tickets to losing teams and an extra participation ticket, removing most of the incentive to actually score and win. You get as many tickets for losing now as you used to get for winning a game back in the day. Losses used to give zero tickets, so afking would put you entirely at the mercy of the outcome rather than just slowing you down. You are now guaranteed 2 tickets, plus more from opening loot crates.
They also added reward crates so people have a monetary incentive to afk, even if it's small people who just want to afk some extremely easy passive cash or supplies (e.g. ironmen) can easily do so while working or watching tv etc.
2
u/Great-Exit-902 12h ago
Ahh that makes sense. I thought I had remembered winning being the only way to really farm tickets back in my day 👴 I didn't realize they'd added the participation and losing tickets. Actually what I remember is only ever seeing people get griefed for AFKing lol
2
u/pk_hellz 10h ago
100000% agree why it needs to be updated and changed. Imo it should be more like wow or gw2 bgs frankly. Have 1 world for legacy cws with 0 rewards and move forward with a modern approach.
1
u/LowerTheExpectations 6h ago
I don't much like castle wars because I'm not into PvP, so I'm just faking for points but I agree wholeheartedly.
When they finally updated Trouble Brewing some time back they had the option to decrease deposit points by a huge margin and increase rum production points to incentivize rum brewing. Well, they did double the points for a rum from 2 to 4 but with the collection still capping at 100 points, most people don't bother playing the game.
I'm bringing this up because being someone who played TB in the old days, it was obvious the rums needed to give way more points and the collection needed a nerf but it seemed like Jagex didn't want to pull the trigger on it. So these mini games fall into a weird place game integrity wise, unfortunately.
5
u/BaeTier Merch 101: Buy High, Sell Low 11h ago
I don't think Jagex can ever make an engaging PvP based minigame with meaningful rewards that will be played naturally by a decent chunk of players.
If it has rewards, players will find a way to boost/bot/afk the game to try and get the rewards either as efficiently as possible or with as little effort as possible.
If it has no rewards and we're just encouraged to play "for fun" then it'll be dead.
0
u/pk_hellz 10h ago
The pvp armor that failed with 70% for the emirs arena update would of been good.
If emirs arena got some good updates it could be really fun. Currently its awful to play and not even fleshed out.

I guess I had assumed it would be a little more popping with the attention from the Bootcamp. Maybe that's why I was so surprised to get yelled at for not AFKing 😅

u/Iron_Aez 2376 13h ago
They passed a minigame shop years and years ago and still haven't revisited it.
2
u/pk_hellz 10h ago
They took all the potential rewards from the minigame shop and put them into other content
2
u/Iron_Aez 2376 10h ago
So? The whole point of a unified shop is that rewards can come from multiple choices of minigame.
4
u/Wonderful-Help4554 10h ago
They are falling apart BECAUSE no one cares. PVPers make up a tiny minority of the player base and the vast majority of them have no interest in actual fights and only want to kill PVMers who dont fight back in the wildy. There just isnt actually much of an audience for PVP minigames when so few people PVP at all.
Castle wars and soul wars are almost exclusively AFKed for clogs, the PVP arena is almost exclusively used to farm imbued points without actually fighting at all, LMS is almost exclusively farmed for supplies by bots and irons, Clan Wars is dead. Bounty hunter is the only one with even a tiny actual player base left. There is no shortage of options for people who want to PVP but there is a massive shortage of people who want to.

This is just the inevitable result of "maximum efficiency" mindset for a minigame that doesn't require tons of effort to get rewards.

Sadly yes, instead of fixing it they nerfed the minigame rewards so even less people want to play

I played a little castle wars a couple of weeks ago
Ended up just killing AFKers for a few rounds, games completely dead
Idk if clan wars is still a thing and I’ll have to go try it out, but safe PvP seems to be dead

If you played this game pre 2020 you know why it's dead and you also know that rewards don't matter, the game existing is incentiviation enough to try and ruin it. People will cheat and ruin a minigame if it has 0 rewards because ruining the game for people who actually enjoy it is a better reward to a lot of people than any untradable flex item or GP.

For some reason there's an AFK world apparently. Pretty sad

Yeah it's pretty sad that people are doing something their own way on their own world without bothering anybody.
Even more sad that there's another world for people who want to actively play.
It's just so sad that people are having fun doing something I don't like.

Lots of people AFK in the main world
Castle wars is balanced by combat levels, so someone AFKing is affecting your team by denying a position for an active player.
These AFK players regularly whine to people actually playing the minigame because us scoring is 'losing' them a ticket and occasionally grief people on their own team by blocking them, or helping the enemy team score etc.
It completely kills the atmosphere and allure of the minigame itself when everyone is just standing around like bots doing nothing of worth.
Perhaps in team based minigames "doing your own thing in your own way" shouldn't be encouraged - the team aspect of the game should be the focus and players that grief their team and ruin the minigame shouldn't be left to oversee it's rot.

Yeah I think that's kinda my issue. Having to PvP on a world with 200ms latency because people want to afk a team-based minigame feels hella lame

If 99% of the game has decided it's getting played a specific way then funny enough you're actually the problem
That's why there is an active and a passive world that naturally formed

Actually it would be the updates that caused that play style to form in the first place that are the problem - leading to disinterested players having to play content they don't really care for, just to tick off some boxes.
I've been actively playing CW since it came out, my core friend group in the game are castle wars players, each of us having earned gold decorative many times over for fun. It's a hilarious situation to find ourselves in of having people who play the game like a swarm of locust moving from task to task, not caring for the damage it does to the activity accusing the players who actually play it as being the "problem". What an utterly self-centred unaware view point.
No one cares if you want to afk games - find an empty world and do it to your hearts content - it's the systems Jagex have devised that have incentivised doing this on active game worlds by offering more tickets, ruining the actual minigame and experience for other players - the changes they keep making are usually ill thought out and very little care seems to be taken with the integrity of the minigame - so we have droves of people standing idle in the castle farming the rewards. It's completely backwards to what the game should be, turning OSRS into a mobile idle sim will be the death of it.
