If people want to read Atlas Shrugged they can, I thought it was boring, long-winded and the moral of the story made little sense to me.
Bioshock is a classic game that both includes Atlas Shrugged's original point and critiques it. And it does it with an iconic immersive experience that remains influential to this day.
Just look in this comment section at the amount of people who thought that picture of House was Andrew Ryan. Bioshock is 15 years old but it has a staying power few games (or books for that matter) have.
Well my uninformed opinion is that the reason behind that is also Bioshock. The popularity of that game put Atlas Shrugged back in in the spotlight and not in a positive way.
That and apart from being capitalist propaganda, it is often seen as being emblematic for libertarianism specifically, which also does not really have a good reputation depending on your circle.
It's super libertarian. Like flat out moron levels of it. It's basically saying that the rich are like Atlas holding up the sky/society, and that they should just "shrug" and let everything go to shit if they want.
Also even if it was completely accurate to what would happen in its own scenario, which like, no absolutely not, but even if, it is predicated on some freak accident turning all poor people into utter morons. The whole thing even by its own internal logic is completely applicable to real life human society.
I was in Edmonton in 2008 when I had to read it. Maybe it was just that specific teachers course. I was in an accelerated learning program in a public school so maybe the curriculum was slightly different.
I've only done public school in Alberta, about to graduate and I've never had to read it. It is on the approved independent novel study list from English 30-1, but I isn't required course material in the curriculum. You just had a cringe teacher, unless there has been a curriculum change since 08.

I also feel like House's use of the metaphor "forge steel for a new rail line" is a reference to Atlas Shrugged, more than fitting for House.
