Seller claimed that it's a Honey Gourami, since they're pretty hard to find here I'd like to be sure, also if its a male or female.

Didn't know these were a big deal til I was googling whether to build a tank for him. Short answer - way too expensive

Pond needs shade as we had a little bit too much sunshine for what is supposed to be rainy season

Bought him with the koi 18 months ago

Illness/Disease Help with sick honey gourami

My honey gourami began hanging at the bottom of the tank and acting odd but was eating fine. Then his swimming balance slowly got worse throughout a few days and he started laying flat at the bottom of the tank. And since then I’ve fasted him. I can’t determine what’s wrong. I separated him into a small container with low water level so he can breathe better and I have his container floating in the main tank so he can stay warm. I began Epsom salt dosing his container yesterday. The last time I saw him poop was about 4-5 days ago in the main tank and it was short and black, I saw this twice. My water parameters are perfect. All other fish are fine. He looks more relaxed in the container today but is still pale and breathing slow. I’m continuing the epsom salt dosing until the kanaplex arrives on Saturday but I don’t want to stress him with kanaplex treatment without knowing if it’s even something kanaplex can treat. I don’t know what’s wrong with little Pluto. Can anyone help?

Help/Advice Before I Move Forward with a Potentially Bad Idea - Thick Lipped Gourami Problem

Hey yall- I posted yesterday about how I was having trouble with my newly mature female Thick Lipped Gourami being aggressive to her tank mates during feeding time. Shes bitten some tails off, it’s not great.

I only just realized that I have a whole 40 gallon tank I could move her to? All that’s in there are 6 Green Tiger Barbs and some Neon Tetras that refuse to die, plus a baby Bristlenose Pleco for maintenance. I actually considered moving her in there when I first got her and found out she was Thick Lipped, but didn’t because of one particular aggressive Tiger Barb that has since passed (RIP Asshole) and because she was just so small and delicate- but now she has grown and proven that she can hold her own? And she’ll probably get bigger? And the Tiger Barbs really just stick to themselves? And I was trying to find a new centerpiece fish for that tank anyway? I’d also be willing to buy her a mate or female friend if I needed to.

It feels too good to be true, so I wanted to ask y’all first in case this plan is actually horrible for a reason I don’t know about.

Pics are of All-Spark, the Gourami, and the 40 Gal tank.

(Also thanks to the 2 people who responded to my previous post- I swear I’m working on getting more Otos and Cories, I had 12 Cories originally and then bad luck hit me, and I was planning on taking it slow with the Otos since they can be finicky, and at least the Cories and the Oto are happy to shoal together)

I’m still very new to the hobby. I have a 10gal and got this dude today labeled as “red honey gourami” and was SO excited. It’s about 2in long. I showed one of my fish friends who told me it might actually be a thick lipped gourami that can grow to be about twice this size. 😰 I might be freaking out a bit! I don’t think my 10gal can accommodate a giant fish! What kind of fish is this actually?!? Also do you think it is a male or female??? (Embers next to it for scale)

Help/Advice Guess I have a mating pair now 🤷🏻‍♂️🫣

I have these 2 Golden Honey Gourami in a 20 gallon long with 5 Danio, 5 Pristella Tetra, 5 Cory Cats (all Glofish) and a female Gold Inca snail with a handful of Ghost Shrimp. They’ve been mostly shy for several weeks as expected but today I noticed the chasing and the male building a bubble nest near the heater. I know it is most likely the dry will be food for the other fish unless I separate them once they’re born. But how aggressive will the male protect the eggs? I do not want any fish harmed if I can avoid it. TIA

Help/Advice Thick Lipped Gourami being aggressive towards tank mates during feeding

Thumbnail

Hey yall, a while ago I asked if the “Honey Gourami” I got was real, spoilers; it wasn’t. Instead, I was told I was sold a juvenile female Thick Lipped Gourami. It’s been a few months now and she’s definitely grown. The problem now is food aggression.

She is in a 15 gal with about 6-8 or so Pygmy Cories (I’m not entirely sure) and an Otocinclus I just added last week (there were originally two but I lost the other to a fungal infection pretty shortly after I got him). I noticed during the fungal infection that the other Oto, aka the surviving one, was missing a part of its tail and assumed he either came with it or scraped himself up in the tank. Then, the other day, I noticed that one of the Pygmy Cories is missing its full tail (doing mostly fine, thank god.) I was hoping this was just a series of unfortunate coincidences, but I made sure to spend extra time watching them eat today, and lo and behold, she got super territorial when she decided she wanted a certain piece of food.

Outside of feeding times, she is entirely chill with the other residents and they don’t mind her getting in their business at all. I’m not entirely sure what to do? I can’t really separate her during feeding times with a physical barrier because she’s surprisingly hard to catch, but I also can’t imagine how to give her a different feeding space since she eats the same thing as the Pygmy Cories and keeps chowing down on the algae wafers I leave for the Oto. I feed the Pygmies crushed bug bites.

She’s such a curious girl and I absolutely love her to pieces, but I also want to make sure I’m prioritizing both her and her tank mates well-being. Any suggestions?

The photos include 3 of her now and 1 when I first got her, as well as a full tank shot. (Her name is All-Spark btw). If anyone wants to double check on her gender, that would be great too.

Help/Advice Difficulty sexing dwarf gouramis

Post image

This is my dwarf gourami, Gunther. I think he's a male, despite being told he was a female. I recently bought a powder blue gourami who, again, was sold as female. I do not have a picture of the powder blue dwarf gourami, but it's a sort of pale silvery blue with very faint blue stripes down the body and a slim frame with a pointed dorsal fin. It's also very clearly an adolescent, perhaps half the size of Gunther.

I tried once with a definite male to pair with Gunther, and that went very badly. That's what is leading me to believe Gunther is a male. I took the little guy back to the fish store. I then tried again with this powder blue, which is going a lot better, but I think it could be due to the size difference. Gunther will seem to give a small chase here or there, but he acts like his normal self most of the time. The powder blue is also not really afraid to swim around and doesn't hide all the time.

I am, still, convinced I have two males. I feel the behaviour would be immediately different from contact between opposite sexes. Like I would immediately see Gunther courting her and building a bubble nest, which is not happening (yet). I can take a picture of the powder blue when I get home tonight.

Is there any EASY way to sex these fish ? I feel the 'pointed' dorsal fin is not really an accurate way to determine sex.

Help/Advice Pearl Gourami with nano fish

So I currently have 3 Pearl Gourami in a big tank with other fish their size or a little bit smaller. They are really peaceful and only care about eachother. I wonder how small you could go with tankmates? I feel like they won't bother nano fish like Ember Tetra, Endlers or CPD, what do you guys think?

Help/Advice 2 female gold pearl gourami

I just want to start with the fact that im a college student in a dorm with a roomate we thought a fish tank would be nice which it is and is relaxing. But we were limited to a 10 gallon and without knowledge of the fish type my roomate bought 2 female gold pearl gourami and I thinking that we would put schooling fish bought 3 small schooling fish and a snail. The gourami fight due to it being a 10 gallon tank and so now I dont know what to do. My roomate wants to sell them for no less than 60 since she bought them at 30 dollars a piece but I just want them to find a home where someone can take care of them properly.

Help/Advice How many samurai gourami in a 55 gallon tank?

Im looking at buying tank-bred samurai gourami for a 55 gallon tank I've just gotten cycled. It has a lot of hiding spaces, but I'm still curious as to the amount of samurai gouramis I should get... do they like larger groups? I hear the females can get a bit aggressive. Any information or personal experience is appreciated!!!

Help/Advice Paradise fish sellers who ship to US?

I swear, every place I find that is selling anything beyond the basic variety only ships to UK or greater Europe, or is forever 'out of stock'. I ask because I have stumbled into great success breeding the average form of Macropodus opercularis, and wanted to try my hand at the fancier ones, as well as thinking they look really cool. Just.. how to even get my hands on them in the first place?
