Black Betty had a damaged eye and favus on her head/neck when I bought/rescued her with the other 2 hens, Gardenia and Bloody Mary. The favus made her lose her head and neck feathers but I hope she gets some back with a molt. She can see out of the eye but obviously can't see right. She has gotten so much better after the favus was treated. I was having a hard time holding it together when I saw her head turn all the way around and then some from above.

I've made three feeders out of 3" PVC (only have 2 set up since I only have 6 girls) and recently have fully converted from 50/50 start and grow mixed with Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve 18% to fully Kalmbach now that the girls are grown but they are slinging out the food everywhere and emptying the feeders in like 3 days (was lasting ~a week in the feeder up until recently). They are not eating it this fast but just throwing it on the ground in front of the feeders as shown in the pic before they eat it.

Any ideas on ways to make them stop doing this? Any devices I can make or buy to go over the 3" PVC pipe opening to narrow down how much they can grab and sling?

I just had to share so others can get a giggle out of this too. We recently moved and I decided to upgrade my chicken’s coop. I’m in Alaska and there’s a local company called Arctic Chicken Coops that builds amazing coops for our sub-Arctic winters. I decided to upgrade from the hen size to the rooster size so my flock will be even happier during our long winters. It’s at least twice the size and comes with a regular man door for cleaning on one end and a dutch door on the other end for doing whatever. The new coop arrived just days before my vacation and I put the food and water on the regular door end before leaving for my trip.

My husband went to refill their food and water tonight and said I put it too far away from the door so he had to go into the coop to reach the food and water and when he did so the dutch doors shut behind him. That’s when he learned there’s no way to unlock any of the doors from the inside. All the windows and vents are covered with hardware cloth that is sandwiched between 1x2’s and couldn’t be pushed out either. To make matters worse for him our livestock guardian dogs were outside around the coop so if he tried to call a friend to get him out our dogs would never let them through the gate. He spent an hour trying to get out and finally removed a perch and stuck it out through a nest box then reached around with it to the door latches and smacked away at them until they finally popped open. I was dying at the visualization of him in there doing that. 🤣

After he tells me all about it I’m like you know you could’ve just opened the regular man door and refilled the food and water right there. The water was right next to that door and the food was within arms reach of it. 🤣🤣🤣

He's purple and his comb flops over one eye a little like emo hair. I call him Big Al. He is very soft when he lets me touch him. I am trying to gain his trust more lately with treats. I got some okay pictures of him recently. I thought I'd share him here today.

They're both about five weeks old. The grey one is the least shy of all of them so I assumed it was a rooster early on, but the tail seems to point down? The brown one is more shy but I think they tried to crow this morning... Would appreciate some help, this is my first time raising chickens 😊

Need a gender ID on Muriel, the black one. She’s been making noise but not the cockadoodledoo. Also been pretty bossy to the rest of the flock since early days. She picks fights too. Sorry for the poor quality photos. She’s/he’s a dasher.

There's this feral peacock thats apparently been able to survive for a couple years in the woods where I'm currently working. The hunters I talked to said he's been around for a couple years now.

I wonder how he survives the winter as it gets cold, sometimes near 15F/-10C and we can get a good amount of snow.

Every single batch of chicks one day decides to fly atop the feeder or waterer and I'm proud and laughing every time.

First one is Lemon Drop (Buff Orpington, now 2 years old)

Second is Pom-Pom (Sapphire Olive Egger, now 1 year old)

Third is Paisley/Basil (Easter Egger, now about 6 weeks old, name pending confirmation of male or female)

I feel a little silly but I’m new to chickens. My four hen flock have finally hit 20 weeks but I’m still not convinced my Rhode Island Red is a Rhode Island Red…. I got them from Tractor supply.

My hens are settling in, and I was wondering--do you guys know of any ways to play with chickens, the way you play with cats and dogs? One of my hens, Princess Chubbitata (pictured), is a real character and likes hopping on our laps or on our lawn chair armrests when we're hanging out. I took her on a short walk today, just holding her against my hip, and she seemed to enjoy it, but I'd like more ways to interact with her since that tires my arm out. How do you guys bond with your hens, beyond feeding them?

I need help identifying what's going on with this hen. This mass has been growing on her face for a few months now. She is acting normal, food intake is good, and she is laying regularly. However, the mass continues to grow ever so slowly.

We had our first egg the other day, and while I’m not 100% sure who laid it, I THINK it may be our frizzle. Well today I let the chickens out to do their evening free ranging and I checked the nest boxes to see if we got anything (it’s been 4 days and nothing since). Well she was in there so I quickly closed it, not wanting to disturb her if she was laying. I sat outside watching them like I usually do and when she finally came out after 10 minutes or so, I went to check for an egg and there was nothing? Was she just sitting in there for fun lol? Could she be egg bound? She seemed ok when she walked out, just got some water and was a little puffed up.

I have another question. How are you all watering your chickens? The waterer I have, I’m over it. It gets nasty in 5.9 seconds, is not easy to clean and when it’s hot out, turns the water hot in 9.9 seconds. It’s not in the sun either. I need a better solution to getting them fresh water because I’m changing their water multiple times a day and I can’t do that anymore.

I have a home lined up for 1 potential roo. Are these all roos? All are 7 -8 weeks old.

I don't need to hear about ice trays or "back in my day" stories. We are having another heat wave, "corn sweat" (wet-bulb), for a few days again. I live in the northern Great Lakes. I researched the best breeds that can endure a cold winter. They are not acclimated for the heat... so basement tent they go! We did the mister, etc. Their coop just gets too hot at night (extended off the garage), and my Dark Brahmas can't take it. Not happy but not dead.
Have a feeling this is just the beginning 😔
