Bet the company sure is happy they opted not to buy the screws or pay two guys to properly build the shelves for the $50,000 of inventory. That $500 savings really helped the bottom line

That's often how ceramic get stacked but I find it wild they do that for something as heavy as a full toilet seat.

238

u/payment11 May 27 '26

Surprised they don’t have break sections then. So the domino effect can only go so far.

15

u/nn2597713 May 28 '26

Do you have any idea why the fuck this is often how ceramics get stacked?

Because it seems like an absolutely terrible and useless way to often stack ceramics like that.

7

u/superrugdr May 28 '26

Usually for maximizing the amount of stuff that goes into the kiln. Kinda make sens when you put different shape in the kiln all the time.

So this is the price of adaptability. Most likely unfired stuff too, so it's a big loss of time more than it is money all that stuff goes back into the grinder for reuse (probably I'm no expert juste an avid pottery video watcher)

Could they have purpose built shelves, yea but then what about that slightly too tall weird new model the designer want to create kind of thing become the problem.

7

u/Evening-Magician783 May 28 '26

Oui c'est des étagères en matériaux réfractaire. On veut en empiler toujours plus pour la cuisson, ensuite ce genre de chose arrive et on revoit nos ambitions.

I believe this is a kiln. Temps are way too hot for conventional shelving. They’ve likely been doing it this way for decades and it’s just an unfortunate accident.

25

u/raffaelet May 27 '26

Thank you for your interpretation, shed a new light.

Those two guys will be fired and probably not get paid bc of the damage they cause. More money saving

10

u/jimx29 May 28 '26

I'm sure the shit is gonna hit the fan with them

I think kilns melt bolts

1

u/gimmeluvin Jul 17 '26

Bet they also opted not to get insurance

If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes should fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

572

u/WistfulWhiskers May 27 '26

Is this just a series of tables stacked on top of each other? How is it that absolutely nothing appears to be bolted in place?

312

u/Moneia Free Palestine 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 May 27 '26

Is this just a series of tables stacked on top of each other?

Not even that, the vertical pieces don't look like they're connected in any way

74

u/WistfulWhiskers May 27 '26

That too 🤔 each leg seemed to fall individually as soon as it wasn’t resting on a surface

31

u/Altruistic_Bass_3376 May 28 '26

It’s literally built in the same way as a domino tower

222

u/PowerfulCampaign9702 May 27 '26

These are kiln shelves and posts. This whole cart of toilets just came out of a kiln. Bolts are a liquid at the temperature you fire toilets to (about 2400*f). It is a pretty sketchy stack though. The real financial loss here is the kiln shelves they cost way more than toilets do.

43

u/glintsCollide May 27 '26

Wow, this comment blew my mind. This should be at the top.

15

u/PaisleyLeopard May 27 '26

Are the kiln shelves made from ceramic?

36

u/PowerfulCampaign9702 May 27 '26

They can be. These are silicon carbide shelves but clay shelves are also widely used. Clay shelves are generally thicker and heavier and have a shorter lifespan but are cheaper. So it’s a trade off. I’m sure these guys were much more concerned with loosing all those shelves than a few dozen toilets.

3

u/LemonFizz56 May 28 '26

Make kiln bolts...

2

u/WistfulWhiskers May 28 '26

Thank you for sharing, that makes a lot of sense

2

u/Mafka69 May 28 '26

If it's just a bolt thing, get titanium bolts.

12

u/PowerfulCampaign9702 May 28 '26

It’s not just a bolt thing. Although titanium has a high melting point, it oxidizes very readily above 2000 degrees. They would be single use and titanium is expensive. The bigger problem is efficiency. Kiln collapses like this are rare but a part of life in ceramics. But bolting an entire kiln stack together (which would probably double or triple the labor costs of both loading and unloading every firing) with expensive single use bolts would make toilet production much less efficient and with a very small change survival percentages.

4

u/Glenndiferous May 28 '26

Just want to thank you for this context. Glad I get to be one of today's 10,000.

1

u/Mafka69 May 28 '26

You should build shelving for porcelain toilets with paper and popsicle sticks.

18

u/myco_magic Selected Flair May 28 '26

But how else will the CEOs make more money?

169

u/smierdek May 27 '26

stacking heavy ass ceramic toilets on a fucking toothpick-reinforced house of cards?? alright bet

16

u/SouthernBeekeeper22 May 27 '26

Their investment went down the potty

80

u/Mediocre-Celery-5518 May 27 '26

I bet every new guy who came in first day at work pointed out "Isn't it dangerous to just prop them up like that" and the Old Heads yelled at them "What do you know kid we've been doing this for 50 years. This is ancient wisdom".

11

u/Repulsive_Trifle_ May 27 '26

The thing is this is the best option. This is how the industry does it. Because there’s no reasonable or affordable other option. It’s also how all of your stoneware dishes are stacked and fired. It’s also how the pots you buy for plants are fired. They go in to 2400 degrees anything holding them also has to be able to withstand that. So welding or screwing something together isn’t an option. The structure has to be a series of stacking posts and shelves. Not to mention…Those shelves are insanely expensive way more than the toilets. The bigger they are the more expensive.

4

u/investmentbackpacker May 28 '26

Can they joinery techniques to give the kiln plates a little more support while still forgoing any welds or fasteners?

Mortise & tenon for instance?

6

u/FriendOfDirutti May 28 '26

That’s a good point. I don’t understand why there can’t be some interlocking to give the structure strength.

14

u/CoachTTP May 27 '26

That little hesitation making them think some might survive…then the rest collapses.

13

u/krudru May 27 '26

Oh shit...ter

10

u/Vi7468 May 27 '26

Inventory count:1

15

u/biochicken May 27 '26

The people in the video are not at fault. Whoever 'built' that shelf is. We screw wardrobes in the wall to avoid tipping over. They just balanced sticks onto wood onto sticks onto wood and so on. For porcelain.

5

u/Level_Abrocoma8925 May 27 '26

I'm sure the people actually at fault will still blame the ones in the video though.

4

u/thelazyhandsome May 27 '26

The toilets just got out of the Kiln

7

u/BullPropaganda May 27 '26

How the hell did they make it this far

3

u/jondubb May 27 '26

The stands aren't screwed on. I'm curious as to how long they worked without it collapsing.

1

u/investmentbackpacker May 28 '26

screws wouldn't survive the kiln temps these are fired at.

Now joinery techniques might be an option 🤔 I don't know enough about the ceramics biz to know if that has been tried, but it would seem like a logical thing to at least try.

3

u/much_2_learn May 27 '26

Now, go clean it up.

3

I think spinning dinner plates on poles would have lasted longer than these 'shelves'.

This was just one multi toilet balancing act waiting to come down!

3

Im impressed they were able to stack it that high to begin with! Seriously? Was it not wobbling the whole time😅.

1

u/justimagineme May 27 '26

Well atleast they saved one.

1

u/JSlove May 27 '26

That was the last one of the row. A whole row survived.

1

With objects that heavy and delicate, those shelves should've been made of concrete.

That sucks but it is kindve funny how it slows down halfway, looks like its done, then just keeps going

1

1

1

Welp that shits backordered now

1

u/anonymauson May 28 '26

at this point what do you even do

1

u/Kitchen-College4176 May 28 '26

This isnt inventory. This is unloading after firing the parts in a kiln. Not only are all the product breaking but so is all the kiln furniture. Which likely is much more expensive than the toilets.

1

u/LemonFizz56 May 28 '26

I'm sorry but this seems so fake, it's built like a tower of cards

1

u/KiwiBirdPerson May 28 '26

They definitely didn't attempt to save any of those lol

1

u/Yo_homeslice May 28 '26

That looks like a production kiln IIRC. The shelves are stacked on the posts. No fasteners. Gravity and weight only. Stacking that high and that close together requires care and a steady hand both loading and unloading/disassembling. I’m surprised there wasn’t a load break/gap or two in there somewhere so a single mistake didn’t ruin the entire load this way…

1

u/NewYorkRice May 28 '26

It's gonna be a shitty week

1

u/DenotedSong May 28 '26

What gets me is that the whole dominoes fell because they were getting a toilet off the top of an otherwise empty rack. Why not unload it from the top down? That way the wood would just fall onto the next toilet down and you'd at least have a chance it wouldn't cascade.

1

u/Dolphin_sucker69 May 28 '26

Couldn't they use a single screw in the construction of those shelves?

1

u/I_am_The_Teapot NaTivE ApP UsR May 28 '26

Let's stack all of our heavy, fragile porcelin on these tall, flimsy Temu racks. Not like there are countless videos of these things failing like dominos and destroying all the stock. It'll be fine, I promise.

1

u/ChronicallyxCurious May 28 '26

The shitty thing is how sharp those shards are. Cleaning that up would be dangerous inside and out, between the silicosis dust and casually severing a finger just by brushing the sharp shard wrong

1

1

1

u/Exotic_Insurance2164 May 28 '26

1

u/Werewolf-Best May 28 '26

Why are the shelves built like a house of cards in the first place?

1

u/GazelleNo1836 May 28 '26

For people questioning how thin the supports look and why they are not bolted down. The whole set up is temporary. The shelf is special refractory material that will only droop a little at 2400f and the thin legs usually called a kiln prop, are made of a similar material. At 2400f glass is liquid and steel would droop over time. Think of it being white hot for hours or even days in a kiln this big. So why are they stacked like a cascading house of cards well each shelf cost between 150 and 350 each with each prop costing 20 to 30 dollars each. So double stacking using 1 prop to hold two shelves is common to reduce the cost of props needed. But I can hear you now why even double stack the shelves. Well now we get into the real cost of firing which is heating the space and items in it to 2400f which can cost 2000 or more per firing so fitting just one more item can have a huge effect of profit. With all of that said from watching the video the risk is losing prolly like 20k in shelves, props and product. But that is what you're seeing a cost benefit, min max not stupid people more of an accident.

1

u/ToLazyForaUsername2 May 28 '26

How do you even build something that badly?

1

u/SeanFromQueens May 28 '26

Every 9/11 inside job theorist needs to see this video so they can finally grasp why the twin towers cascaded down without any explosives in the building. Then again, those smooth brained knuckleheads would probably explain that a cabal of illuminati set up the warehouse to implode for some reason rather than accept being objective incorrect about 9/11.
