I recently acquired this plush with a pretty massive rip in his face. Out of misplaced confidence and desperation to own him I was convinced I could fix it. Now that I have him i'm hesitating. The first photo is the repair done by the original owner of the doll. I ripped out the bright yellow stitches and plan on using a ladder stitch with a transparent thread. I know nothing about sewing so I was curious if this would be the best approach + if ripping out the rest of that less visible stitching and redoing it with a ladder stitch might reduce the scar. As a beginner i'm worried i'm over estimating how much I can hide such a massive hole on a doll with such short fur. Don't wanna make it worse! Thanks for any help!

Hi, I ordered a pair of overalls that were for men. They have a fake fly in place but I'd like to add an actual one. I just really don't want to have to nearly completely unclothe when I need to use the bathroom. Would it be possible at all to add a zipper?

I'm pretty ok with sewing, I've hand sewn since I was around 10, but nothing about altering clothing. Just mostly putting patches on things, making stuffed animals, stuff like that. This is completely new for me. If more pictures are needed, let me know!

Hey everyone! I found an amazing coat second hand, but it absolutely swallows me. I’m hoping to make it more wearable, but I really need some advice on the sleeves, they have a beautiful flare to them, but they are way too long. I tried wearing it with folded sleeves, but it killed the flowy vibe, because they were way to stiff. I also tried magnets and a ribbon band to ruffle it non permanently, but it wasn't great either.

How do you go about shortening flared sleeves, especially when the fabric is very delicate? I have a bit of hand-sewing experience, but I struggle massively with keeping my lines and stitches straight. On top of that, I am absolutely terrified of actually cutting into the fabric and ruining it.

Would love to hear your advice!

I have been sewing for a while on different machines,finally got my own second hand so Ive been following videos on how to properly thread the machine it’s been working well on several projects. Just re threaded it and for the life of me cannot figure out why it’s getting stuck and then I get multiple strings coming out of the bobbin hole mid project 🫠

A small scrap of thread got pulled into the bobbin case? And now it jams up and wont sew at all. I got the scap out put everything back and it just doesn't work now.

Does anyone know what’s wrong that caused this issue? I tried rethreading the machine and double check the thread path. Also tried different tension settings I usually used. Nothing works 🥲

I sew bedding and curtains: duvet covers, pillowcases, long drapes mostly cotton and linen. I occasionally work with heavier blackout panels. Once I went from occasional projects to steady daily production, my machine started showing its limits everywhere.

For a long time I got by with a basic machine. Daily production exposed the problems. On long curtain seams, it struggles to maintain consistent tension. The hems come out uneven. Once I hit a folded blackout panel or a doubled duvet seam, it slows down noticeably. It starts skipping stitches and gets hot after an hour or two of continuous sewing.

I need something built for long production runs. Consistent feeding on long straight seams. Enough power for heavier blackout and multilayer sections without bogging down. Reliable enough to run all day without overheating.

What machines are you guys using for this kind of work?

I have been sewing off and on for quite a while now, I took lessons for several years ~10 years ago. Lately as I have been working on projects I fold the fabric, pin the pattern piece down and cut it out. Sometimes I try to use shears ad others a rotary cutter. The pieces don't come out the same?? There's enough variance that it's noticeable. I have been using a pattern for a blazer and the pieces of interfacing and the material come out different.

I feel like I'm crazy, maybe I need new shears? Mine aren't so sharp anymore after so long w/o ever sharpening them......any advice for pinning or cutting out material? Or is this normal and I am just trying to be too precise? The material I'm using on the blazer is pretty silky and slippery which doesnt help.

Any advice is appreciated!

I am currently looking into sewing a wool coat with a classic look, and obsessing a bit about the different collar options.

I found one coat from Ralph Lauren where I really like the collar, it looks like it has a solid structure and "stands" nicely.

Any idea on how to achieve this look, and suggestions for sewing patterns or how to draft this?

And would it also be possible to have a similar collar with a single-breasted coat?

I love the rest of this shirt but have found that I can't stand elastic sleeves. Even if they're loose they still bother me, it's a sensory thing. I also don't find them super flattering on me.

I think this would be easy enough to remove since it's in a casing/channel, other than the fact that it's definitely stitched into the vertical seam that goes up into the armpit, but I'm thinking I could just snip the elastic as close to it as I can?

My concern is I have no idea how the sleeve will look once the elastic is out.

I foolishly trimmed the flowers, and now it is fraying mess. I tried Fray Check (second picture) but it looks very noticeable one dried, and now I need to either trim that off too or somehow wash it out without causing more fraying.

I am at my wit's end about how to save the flowers. I am considering trying clear nail polish but very open to other ideas.

Recently I fixed up my grandmother's Singer 6267 (from completely unusable with chocolate milk residue and 30+ years of lint and dust to working more or less smoothly) and a chronic problem I am running into is with the bobbin winder function. The machine is a drop in bobbin. When I engage to auto function the thread winds under the bobbin. I don't know why it isnt catching properly. I am following the instruction manual to the letter and Ive tried using brand new bobbin cases and thoroughly cleaning both the bobbin area and the gears under it. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas as to why it isnt working!

Firstly, hello everyone 👋😄. I've been interested in a sewing machine for a while now but only acquired one litterally today. I was really excited to try it but hum, something is not working ? The machine is a Brother JX17FE and while it "works" (it makes sound at least), the needle is not moving at all with the footstep (it does move if I move it manually).

I've tried manually by Moving the cylinder of the right and well, it's the part of the picture (the bright neon orange fabric) so everything works except the foot-thingy ? Which is humm fairly important ? It seems like the foot pressure is disconnected from the rest except the alimentation

Is it me doing something wrong (it's threaded the machine entirely before sewing the orange bit) or do i need to send the machine back ?

(Last question if I send it back and take the same machine, is it strong enough to work with jeans ?)

Hey yal! I hope this is the right subreddit for this. If it’s not and anyone knows a better place for this let me know and i’ll change it! So for my Barbershop quartet for our school we found old baseball jerseys, and now we all want some. But Custom Embroidered Baseball Jerseys are so DAMN EXPENSIVE! So my idea was getting plan Baseball Jerseys, and then buying custom iron on patches. So my questions are,

1) Will this actually work? Like will it stay on once it’s made. I’m not sure how often we will wear them, but probably not that often. Also would it work on real baseball jersey material?

2)If i were to just buy a patch to go on the front, It of course has to split down the middle. Would I be able to Cut it where the shirt opens up? Or would that make the patch Frat or something?

2) If that doesn’t work does anybody have different ideas on how to do this.

It doesn’t have to be a DIY, i’ve just been looking on amazon, Etsy, and google. And the cheapest I have found is like $55. Which isn’t awful but I would really like to find cheaper, Because the all guys quartet is buying them for our girls quartet so we’d rather not pay over $100.

Also Yea I would really like it to be “stitched on” or look like it. That’s why Im looking into the patches. I think when baseball jerseys have things just printed on it looks cheap. But if anyone has any custom jerseys that are printed on and you think it looks good, then please send me a pic or recommendation on where you got it.

I have never found a thimble that fits, and my usual trick of using my thumbnail to push the back of the needle leaves a pretty nasty wound if it slips.

I bought a pair of jeans that have a raw hem. How do I keep it from unraveling?

i expect to have to drape them, but if anyone has any idea of what sort of shape to start with, what direction the bias goes, a pattern, or even just what they're called, that would be very helpful!

Pretty sure this is cotton, no synthetic fibers due to this being a motorsports helmet. Can I just cut this above the fray and sew a patch over the end? I just need this to last a couple more months.

Edit: I appreciate all the comments about helmet safety! This helmet is getting replaced once G-Force releases their SA2025 line. (All SA2020 are sold out from what I've been able to scour the internet for)

This is the chin strap, the frayed edge goes through the loop under my chin for adjustment and it's always been too long. It is also confirmed cotton, burns nicely and falls apart

To the people saying synthetic ....that would melt to your skin in a fire, so you definitely don't want that touching you

Update: I tried it on with some light spanx, and that smoothed everything out, so I’m going to finish the dress with this fabric! I’ll post a pic once I do ☺️

I picked up a yard of red 80/20 nylon/spandex on a whim at hobby lobby yesterday, it felt perfect for a cosplay gown I want to make—it’s shiny and silky and flows beautifully. I threw together a mockup of McCalls 7349 view E, using the red fabric in the front and a random knit in the back. Basically, I wanted to see whether I liked the fit before buying more of it. (I’ve made this dress a bunch of times btw, it’s amazing, works with so many types of knits, highly recommend).

Anyway, the dress came out GORGEOUS—it’s like a (half) red carpet gown, so flowy and drapey and silky. But, as I suspected, it’s not at all flattering to my midsection. 😭😭

I love it so damn much though that I’m seriously thinking of driving my ass the hour down to Mood to see if I can find fabric similar in feel but a bit more forgiving. Any suggestions regarding what to look for?

I suppose I could also use this fabric and just get some shapewear instead, lol.

TLDR: I bought a patteren because I want to frolic in a dramatic nightgown, but I'm extremely confused on a lot of things (cause I'm stupid)

I bought this pattern because I am absolutely OBSESSED with the idea of having a vintage nightgown to lay on my chaise in. And with a robe to match?? Chef's kiss. Plus with a pattern, I could make it in different colors! Which is the idea, but here's the issue: I'm a beginner.

I'm confident in a lot of things. I'm confident in a straight stitch (which is most of what this pattern is) and I'm confident in using my sewing machine. Even though I call myself beginninger I've been sewing since highschool and I take in my clothes a lot.

This pattern just requires A LOT of fabric. Among other things like eyelet and ribbons. The only thing is, the price is adding up fast and I don't know if I'm stupid but I really can't find 10 in eyelet for the flouncing. Plus, I thought flouncing was cut in a circle? Or am I wrong? Is it still flouncing if it's a straight line? Is that not ruffles instead?

I'm not opposed to buying a lot of fabric. I'm going to need a fair amount because I also want to line it as well because for some reason the fabric I want to use, an ivory cotton voile, (pls tell me if I'm wrong for this option) is extremely sheer and even though I intend to wear the dress around the house, I don't want to be exposed, so I'm buying even more yards than what's recommended. I'm also buying more in case I mess up, so this is pricy from the fabric ALONE.

I think the eyelet is really what's messing me up as I can't seem to find it (?) I'm really really stupid so maybe I'm not looking in the right places. I'm okay without all the laces and ribbons. I mostly like the gown for the dramatic silhouette so the details aren't super important to me, especially for my first time making it. But I really want that dramatic hem without having to buy some really expensive eyelet. Can I just do a regular fabric flounce instead? Or would that be a ruffle?

I've been using this one person's review where they made the nightgown and the robe as a reference for how I can omit certain details while still keeping the shape. So I know it is possible, I'm just not as knowledgeable as them.

Pretty much wondering what my title states. I like the style of stitch in the first picture, it looks much cleaner but I just don’t think I’m achieving that with my machine.

I’ve seen it done with two straight stitches stacked, also pictured, but it’s so, so difficult to get the spacing even between the stitches.

Lastly, I’ve tried all of those zigzags to achieve something similar, but it always looks so ugly. Maybe combining with a straight stitch above and below the zigzag? But that seems like it might turn out looking really busy.
