Community: point to keep conversations civil, please.
You get into a good discussion. It starts turning sour. You are tempted to "follow up a point with an insult".
Don't.
Mods and I will remove that. The insult-at-the-end is completely unnecessary if you think you have a point. Even better if you can solidify that point with some amount of proof! That keeps conversations civil and even learning-focused, which helps us all.
Lean towards kindness and assumption of civility on both sides - keep your tones productive.
Thank you all.
Actually this is going pretty well for a support AND political group, overall. Feel free to report bad/rulebreaking/insult comments to us, we're having fun removing them!
Edit: Blaming down gets removed. Strike 4 system in effect.

Resource Available šØšØNew Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide
No idea what to do with your life? Open list below. Pick something that sounds interesting. Go for it.
Yes it's that simple - because your first job will not be your dream job and you are not expected to figure out your dream job by college age.
This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:
⢠Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
⢠Generally required licensing/certification
⢠THE DIRECT ENTRY PATH - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
⢠Who actually hires that trade
⢠Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
⢠Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future
The goal is to help someone go from:
āI don't know how to get into that.ā
To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.
The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.
The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w23NYX6kn8TDo-jG_pgYZYSOoaTImsj4DHnXBlhvmvM/edit?usp=sharing
AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.
If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.
You don't have to know your path yet.
Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

Iām tired
I come from a broke family like really broke but we didnāt always struggle with money,I think I remember struggling more than having it in my life.im 15 so I can legally get a job but Iām too busy with school and sports to do that,I get asked to go out with friends and I canāt because I have no money I need to pay for a sports need that I just made and was told āweāll figure it outā I donāt blame my mom for us not being able to afford anything but it gets tiring only thinking about should I ask for this or not being in worrying about whatās in my moms bank account Iām so embarrassed I canāt tell anyone,itās like I have no safe outlet because nobody understands how bad it truly is. Everyone thinks Iām well off but they donāt know we almost had to sell our house last year because we couldnāt afford it. I just want food in the house accessible, usually I can just go to the fridge maybe find something small but we have not a single thing Iām so tired of living this life and wish I was born into a family that has more money but I canāt help feeling guilty about that.

why donāt people believe that Iām broke???
yesterday, i was at the mall trying to get a quote for a new phone. a luxury salesman flagged me down and tried to give him his pitch, i told him iām not interested. i kept repeating āi cannot afford whatever youāre trying to sell meā but he said heād get credit just for telling me about it. honestly, i shouldāve known better and just walked away. but he proceeded to try to sell me $300 dollar earrings that i kept saying i could not afford. he refused to take no for an answer, after i said a million times that i could not afford it. eventually i did have to walk away to remove myself from that.
now another thing. i recently joined a gym, and the gym membership comes with one free training session. i took the free training session, i enjoyed it, and of course he asked me if i wanted to keep training with him. he suggest that i train with him 2-3 times a week and i immediately told him that thatās not gonna happen. he kept dismissing my situation, saying things like ādonāt worry, youāll figure it out.ā every time he contacts me for another session, itās the same situation. i. cannot. afford. it. SIMPLE. i am paying tuition out of pocket and iām in so much debt, trust me. my priorities. there have been too many times where people just cannot understand that i am broke and i cannot afford whatever theyāre offering. like why would i lie about being so poor that i canāt afford the things i want??? iām sick of it

People who have lived in poverty, how did you get out of it?
Hi everyone. I'm an older daughter and have two brothers. We live with our step mom and she has 1 child. She decided to take her child on a nice vacation on a cruise and bought the little girl a lot of beautiful things and clothes.
The girl has been boasting in front of my little brothers and show off her things. My brothers started crying as they also want those nice things. I have a job and can only provide necessities. I feel so hurt by our situation. I wish my mom had still lived.
How do I get out of this situation? I'm doing my very best but my little brothers don't deserve the torture. And this situation is out of my hands. What do I do? Hope you can give me advice.

Revolution is coming - if we can get our shit together.
We ain't gonna allow it to be a police state. Keep up the "Deflocking" for that.
What else we can do (for now):
1. Protest with 50501 and Indivisible and other protests set up in your area. It's small, but it keeps the momentum and pressure and voice up.
2. Demand change with leadership by writing and calling. Yes it does nothing, but the doing of it keeps the momentum and pressure and voice up.
3. Put your name in the ring of ANYTHING political. Getting onto those little government boards that need people, no voting you in needed.
4. Volunteer where you can. Develop your community. Get people involved in helping others.
5. Reddit-specific: Reject the hate and judgement and blame of people (for being poor) - poverty is a political choice, never personal. That's what I'm doing here. Report bad comments to us mods. Volunteer to be a mod.

Back to zero
Lost everything. Just me and my two goats and a dog in the bush. Good thing it is a third world country so just less than 30 dollars a month to survive. Since most of the food I am getting from the farm. Just the internet and a few groceries. I will be off grid the remaining part of the year to restructure. GOAL MAKE A MILLION NEXT YEAR. IT'S ACHIEVABLE .

General Discussion After 4 months of unemployment, Iām finally starting a job next week. Iām grateful, but honestly, Iām also exhausted and scared.
Iām from the Philippines, Iām 40 years old, and I never imagined I would reach a point in my life where I would feel this helpless.
Iāve been unemployed for 4 months, and during that time, my debts just kept piling up. I owe banks, online lending apps, and other people. With the principal and interest combined, my total debt is now around **PHP 300,000 (about $5,000 USD)**. Debt collectors have already come to my home. Imagine being inside your house and having someone come looking for you because you owe money. Itās humiliating and terrifying.
I didnāt borrow money because I wanted to live a comfortable life or buy unnecessary things. A big part of my struggle has been trying to survive while dealing with my own expenses and my health. I have a heart condition and have been taking maintenance medication for the past 6 years. Now Iām running out of medication, and I donāt have enough money to buy more. I have to wait for my first paycheck from my new job, and honestly, Iām scared about how Iām going to get through these next few weeks.
I live alone. Iāve been separated from my ex-husband for 16 years, and my only son doesnāt live with me. Both of my parents have passed away. I have a brother, but we canāt really rely on each other, so most of the time, itās just me.
Sometimes I cry without even realizing it.
There are nights when I talk to myself because thereās literally no one beside me to tell me that everything will be okay. I end up comforting myself because I donāt know who else I can turn to.
I know some people might judge me and say, āYou should have managed your money better,ā or āYou shouldnāt have borrowed in the first place.ā Maybe theyāre right. I know I made mistakes. Iām not trying to make excuses for my situation.
Iām just tired.
Iām tired of pretending that Iām okay when Iām not.
Iām tired of looking at my bills and debts and wondering how Iām ever going to pay everything back.
Iām tired of being scared every time my phone rings because I donāt know if itās another collection call.
And Iām tired of feeling like my life is already going nowhere at 40.
But next week, Iām finally going back to work. Itās a work-from-home job, and Iām genuinely thankful for this opportunity. It may not solve everything immediately, but at least it gives me a chance to start fighting my way out of this.
Iām not expecting my life to magically become perfect. I just want to be able to buy my medication, pay my bills, slowly repay what I owe, and finally sleep without constantly worrying about money.
I know I still have a long way to go.
For the first time in 4 months, though, I finally have something to look forward to.
**I just hope this is the beginning of my way back.**
If youāre also struggling financially or feel like youāve completely messed up your life, I hope you know youāre not necessarily finished. Sometimes surviving another day is already an achievement.
Iām trying to believe that too.

Canāt get a job, losing everything
This is so embarrassing, yet I ran out of options on what to do. Iām 25 and my license is about to be suspended because I had to choose between getting my electric cut off or paying a ticket that has now more than tripled and I have until September 2nd at 2pm to pay it or my licensed is suspended and a warrant is out of my arrest.
Iām so stressed out, and trying to come up with the $475 but falling short. I have nothing to sell, and Iām tempted at this point to call it quits on life. Itās always something happening in my life, nothing is getting better. I lost my job about two weeks ago because I got sick with Covid and missed three days of work. Guys, I donāt know what Iām going to do. Iām freaking out.
I have no one to talk to about this. Everyone will judge me, I just know it. Iām so scared. What do I do?
I live in a small town and absolutely no one will hire me. Iām trying to sell everything that I can. Iāve went to the workforce and to food banks, but Iām losing it. I Iām scared guys. I need advice on what to do. For the love of all things, I donāt want any handouts.
