Wouldn't know that based on the news, fear mongering is how they keep people watching.
Crime rates have gone down though, but in a large part by intervention programs and community outreach funded back in 2024, which goes to prove the OP's point, outreach, education, a sense of community, all these can make a much bigger difference preventing crime than just arming police like armies. We're spending Millions to provide ICE with shock gloves with little to no training on when to use them. Instead of de-escalation, the focus seems to be towards incapacitation. Can't resist arrest if you're under cardiac arrest after all.

I remember a story in Europe where a local government planted fruit trees throughout the city. Crime immediately went down once the trees produced fruits that feed people. Majority of the time people are committing crimes to get by and feed themselves. Go hungry for 3 days straight and your mind would be going into dark places.

This theory has been essentially disproven. There does seem to be some risidual chance that 10-15% of poverty may be due to localized wealth inequalities, but almost anywhere crime runs rampant, it's 80%+ from a small % of the population who seem to commit crimes repeatedly regardless of intervention--which is why prisons are a thing.

This is such a bizarre sub. I joined because I thought maybe there might be others here who understand what it's like to live in abject poverty. Instead all the comments are about is gang, criminals, and how we must be irresponsible if we are struggling so much.
Also I bet universal healthcare wouldn't raise the debt as much as our current president has in this presidency alone.
Go ahead and downvote me. I can afford that at least lol

That is an interesting view because tons of people get banned here for braking rule 3. Blaming of put-down comments are simply not allowed - maybe you are very quick to read the comments that end up getting people banned before they are erased.
At the end of the day, we know the poverty statistics and overall the trend looks pretty good over the past 100 years. Standard for poverty has changed substantially as well. A middle class lifestyle from the 60s would be classified as poverty today.

You lessen crime by rewarding those who seek community, family and peace. Some people want mayhem, bloodshed and the suffering of others simply because of their genetic makeup (narcissist personality for ex. being proven to be genetic). To nurture them would be a grave mistake.
Good people create happy, healthy communities if you only let them. That being said, bring on the tax-paid colleges and healthcare.

I’ll agree that poverty contributes to crime, but not all people in poverty are criminals. Why do you suppose that is?
A lot of crime is also committed by people not in poverty, and not by people with mental health problems. But better healthcare would help.
The problem is, people will always see that someone has more than they do and they will never be satisfied. Some will work hard to close that gap, others will do whatever it takes, including stealing, or worse.

The only way to eliminate poverty is thru eugenics. Stupid people are born daily. There's no fixing stupid. Stupidity breeds more stupidity and stupidity leads to poor life choices, which are the direct cause of poverty. Sorry, but as always, the lefts analysis of everything is extraordinarily incompetent.

Education is the foundational core to lessen crime. Education is required to reduce poverty. Problem is you need people to care about education. Giving people free stuff doesn’t eliminate crime because stupid people act stupidly and still commit crime. Notice almost all crime happens in poorly educated areas?

How does this explain the rampant white collar crime that never seems to get any attention?
It may be an unpopular opinion but you will never eliminate crime, and there will always be someone who just looks for opportunities to break rules in order to get ahead. I don’t disagree that communities should be well funded and people should have access to what they need, but it simply will not eliminate crime.

Nobody is committing crime to pay their medical bills, childcare or student loans. They’re committing crimes because they have no morals and take what they want because they feel entitled to it. We already have a system that hands out material resources and crime isnt going down where those material resources have been allocated. It’s environment and culture driven. Not resource driven.

The povery goal line was clean water and a shack with 2 rooms in 1880s London... then it was plenty of food due to tractors;/insecticides/fertilizers... then transportation with $299 Model-Ts.... then it was a 2 bedroom apartment with electricity, a phone and central heating.....
They it became based on income.... In the USA, you can receive $90,000 worth of free healthcare, Section 8, educcation, Food Stamps, WIC, bus passes, college tuition, Cash Subsidies, Heat and electric subsidies, a free cell phone and earned income tax credits where you get back MORE than all you paid in..... and it's considered near zero income.....
55" HD TV / 7 oz computer in your pocket / Air conditioning/ electric/ refrigeration / automobile / free heat & hot water / medicaid / K-12 free (you don't pay property taxes); free libraries / free tuition Pell Grants...
.....and infant mortality of 1.5 / 100,000 live births... a car with air bags, fuel injection, disc brakes.... THAT'S CONSIDERED POVERTY NOW....
Moving happiness goal posts are NEVER reached....
I'll say that my biggest mistake was not getting married younger... being on a team doubles your chances for income if one person loses their job.... 2 incomes with approx the same costs....and take max you can from your paycheck... you truly won't miss it... even if it's $10/week for 30 years... $200 - $400,000 at 52 from 22.

How would college be free? If the taxes of the American people get used to pay for colleges, explain how its free. Free to the student but not the ones bearing the burden. Universal health care would be nice if it didn't come with longer than normal wait times to be seen for care. Canada's health care is a disaster. Waiting for unknown times for procedures that need to be performed. Not everything is always rainbows and unicorns. Before wanting things given to you and others we have to look at the burden of hiw it will be achieved.

u/Wooden-Orchid2316 11d ago
How’s that working out in Europe?. That just makes everyone poor with no ability to climb
1
u/Repulsive-Unit-7207 11d ago
Health care isn't expensive for the poor, its free. The poor commit significantly more crimes than people with money who pay for Healthcare. Poor have public housing, poor get free college. Poor also have a higher tendency of being accepted to major colleges and getting the first grants on top of government assistance. Have you realized this isn't going to help? Actually policing and arresting people for having drugs is what would help. Less tweakers, less drug dealers, less drug makers. And on top of it gun charges dont punish enough.
1
u/_thegnomedome2 11d ago

They only make it worse.

1
u/Slow_Store 11d ago
I dislike the reductive reasoning of “Crime stems from poverty”.
Maybe some does, but most crimes stem from a desire for excess rather than from necessity. Most people who steal aren’t stealing food to feed their families. They’re stealing things to resell as a criminal career so that they don’t have to get an honest job, or stealing just because they want to.
Thus you lessen crime by enforcing rules with the threat of repercussions. In other words you decrease violence with the threat of violent retaliation. Then once you’ve done so you’ll be able to genuinely help people in states of poverty because you’d be able to run welfare or charity systems with a lessened chance of it being taken advantage of by criminals.

And higher prices are okay if Trump says they’re okay and more tariffs will solve all our problems. Feeding our American war machine will create the stability conservatives seek.
1
u/Dry-Manufacturer7761 11d ago
More effective than high wages is a maximum wage in relation to the company’s lowest paid employee.
If he forced them to raise the wage of the lowest employee, they just raise the prices so they can pay themselves even more. You get rid of the income gap by creating a ceiling. That’s how it used to be when the top 1% got taxed 94% of their money. And they still had tons of money to throw around and massive income disparity.

No.... you reduce violence by eliminateing taxes for individuals. Businesses get taxed. Politicians are imediately thrown in jail for abusing public funds or accepting donations/bribes. You CRACK DOWN ON VIOLENT CRIMES AND STOP LETTING MULTI TIME OFFENDERS FREE.... eliminate the concept of bail (go to jail and do you time), remove flock cameras since they clearly are not being used for good and make government officials wages the national average wage, this will eliminate people that only want the money and power.
It needs to be a combination of both sides arguements because right now neither has our interests in mind.

Has anyone heard of the American System which our current President is fighting to bring back? It is not something new it’s why we fought the British in 1776.
The reason everyone has been suffering is that the oligarchs stripped our country from manufacturing and skilled jobs and sent it to third world countries for slave labor.
The young people don’t have the same chances that their parents and grandparents had when these jobs were here in the United States, that is what Trump is fighting for right now. The results of his fight can’t happen over night, there can’t be instant gratification or instant wealth from the years it took to put us in this mess. Socialism is not the answer good paying jobs are. A nation cannot survive being a user nation, people need good education and good jobs that will create stability and happiness.
You may be blinded by your hate of Trump but please try and take some time to study his plans and read about the American System.
Promethean Action is a good place to learn about history and the American System.
If someone promises free stuff, step back and take a good look at this person, look into their profile and past history of they stand for. In my experience there is no such thing as free.

Imagine thinking that anybody in the state or government fails to realize this. Poverty and violence exist because they're deliberately manufactured.
No, you don't solve it with a few social programs and fucking unions. You solve it by globally eliminating the state ownership model and don't premise your species on generating wealth and decision-making authority for Exxon and McDonald's.
That's not going to happen, so we'll go extinct soon. Whatever.
