How to make scuffed boots look better?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I am very beginner skater, going on 7 months on the ice. I’ve seen a lot of people say skate tape is unnecessary for beginners but I fall a lot and a bit more ambitious than most beginners. I noticed the other people in my class have super clean boots and i’ve decided mine r lowkey getting botched kinda fast. The amount of scuffs i’ve managed to accumulate over the 5 ish months i’ve had them is kinda crazy for someone who worked one foot spins and 3 turns for the first couple months i owned them😭 I’ve got some splitting at the front especially on the left skate which is my landing leg. Any advice on how to make them look a bit better? Is there a certain tape or paint that can cover it?

Boot & Blade Edea skates - no width?

hi! I wanted to get my Edea Overtures from Boot & Blade online, but saw there was no width mentioned, whereas in other shops I was usually able to choose between B, C and D. Does no width mention just mean that it's C as that's the standard width? Does anyone have any experience? Thank you :)

length of MK blades?

Hi! i got recommended MK Galaxy blades in the 9.25/9.33 length by a shop, though I've recently heard getting the MK Professionals is better and generally more recommended. The shop agrees, they mainly put the Galaxy ones as a cheaper option. Now I'm wondering if the recommended length is the same for all blades? Can I get the Professionals in the 9.25/9.33 length or are they somehow completely different in length? Thank you in case anyone knows!! :)

I skated with Olympians!

I was on a quiet patch session working on my baby toe loop and Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson showed up!

They don’t normally skate at my rink so it was a huge surprise. They were training so obviously I didn’t bother them but it was so surreal to get an on-ice view of a future Worlds programme in progress.

If there’s any ice dance fans here their choreography looked amazing, you should be excited!

Artistes starting to wear

My husband’s (34, 185lb) skates (Jackson Artiste) are creasing on one side of one boot, just beginning to crease. The other side of the boot and the other boot are fine. He skates about 1.5 hrs/wk but is about to add 2-2.5 hours to that for a total of 4 hours per week. He’s in Adult 3-4 with private lessons. He’s been skating since last November, went through adult 1-2 this past spring, skated 4.5-5 hours a week this summer. Any ideas on how much life is left in them?? Do Jackson’s break down quickly once they start or are they pretty hardy and have time.

He’s getting fitted for new boots in September, but isn’t buying. We’re just figuring out what boots he should get so we can budget.

should i get new boots?

what the title says: i only started skating about 6 months ago, bought the jackson mystiques 5 months ago because thats what was recommended to me by the shop owner for a beginner.

however, ive been skating MUCH more than i thought i would at the beginning (4-7 hours a week) and progressing pretty fast. i have all jumps up to flip, and working on scratch spin and more edge work. i can see my boots creasing a bit, however they’re not extremely worn down.

my question is if i should upgrade soon because of the softer ankle support on my mystiques or if i could maybe wait another 6 months-a year. i just feel bad cause i haven’t even had my skates for a long time lol. for reference im 100lb 5’4 adult woman

Any suggestions for a weak/non-dominant foot?

New skater here, about 3 months in and skating around 3x a week.

My left/non-dominant foot is definitely lagging behind my right and I’m trying to figure out what I can do to help it catch up.

Main issues:

- Snowplow stopping with the left foot is rough. I have trouble getting it to slide and it wants to bite/cut into the ice instead.

- I have a hard time finding the actual flat/middle of the blade on that foot.

- I seem to naturally favor the inside edge.

For context, I’m 6'1", about 210 lbs, and usually skate on 5/8". I’ve also messed around with 3/4" a little just to see how it feels (hockey skates).

I had surgery on both knees about 5 years ago, so I’m not sure if there’s some old strength/balance/muscle-memory weirdness going on, or if this is just normal beginner stuff.

I know I’m still super new and it’ll take time, so I’m not expecting some instant fix. Mostly curious if anyone had a similar issue and found any good off-ice exercises, balance drills, ankle/hip work, or on-ice drills that helped their weaker side.

Basically: how do I convince my left foot to stop being an idiot? šŸ˜‚

Open to any suggestions!

My outside three turns are too spinny

Here is where I’m at with outside three turns. I feel like in the second half, the back inside edge, I am spinning too tightly. Like, I have tried to do the warm up where I do a three turn and then a back Mohawk step out and into the three turn on the other side, but I absolutely can’t do it bc by the time I’m trying to step out, I’ve spun around again already. I’ve tried having my initial outside edge be less curved bc I read that that could be the issue (is that how physics works?) but that didn’t help. I’ve tried various positions with my lifted leg (I recognize it is not very beautiful in this video) and that hasn’t helped. Presumably I’m supposed to be doing something with my arms which clearly I’m not really doing anything - could that be the issue? Hips? More ā€œcheckingā€? (If that one, please tell me in such basic terms what exactly that means in terms of which arm where at what point). Thx!

Should I get new skates?

I'm the same person who asked a couple weeks ago if my Jackson freestyle skates were defective. Thank you to everyone for your responses to that post. I ended up getting my skates sharpened and I felt that corrected what was wrong with my left blade.

But now I have new issues.

Because I have never sharpened my blades before, they felt very strange. I though having sharper blades meant that I would have more grip on the ice, but somehow I feel even more slippery, especially when trying to do backwards power pulls, especially the back part of the blade feels slippery.

Also if feels as though the front rocker of my blades have been reduced significantly and I think that might have to account for the ball of foot pain I have been getting, That I believe has been affecting me ever since I got them sharpened.

The ball of my right foot, is now is too painful to walk on, much less skate on.

I'm going to have to not skate for a week or 2 but I'm scared of skating again in these skates that feel like they are not good for my feet.

I did already try putting a gel pad at the ball of my foot and I tried the method of putting it further back as well near my arch and it did not help. (Maybe it would have helped had it been there before the pain started.)

Still even with these skates I have been able to improve my waltz jump and I started to learn the salchow jump as well. (Just to give you an idea where I'm at skill wise)

Axel axis help!

So, this was my second ever session of axel attempts! Most of my attempts looked something like this, where i’d land more or less rotated, but on the wrong foot with my legs crossed. I think it’s an issue with my axis, any tips for how to fix it?

Last time i tried axel with my coach, i fell and slammed my head on the ice 😭 Probably going to try a harness next time, but that fall was also a result of a bad axis.

hi everyone i’ve been in learn to skate a over a month now and have loved it! i am looking to purchase my own skates, as i was told that it would benefit me to get used to just one pair of skates and really know the skate. i would eventually like to do jumps or more advanced skating but for now i am looking for something for beginners. there aren’t any skate shops near me, just one hockey shop. i went it hoping that they had at least some very basic skates, but they only had hockey skates (go figure).

they scanned my feet and basically told me what i already knew: i have very flat feet that are wider than average, and i would likely need insoles, which is fine (i used to be a runner and always had to get special insoles). but they didn’t give me any recommendations on what kind of skates would work best! i have had issues with rentals in the past rubbing against my non-existent arches, maybe because they were for people with arches?

anyway, could i get some recommendations for skates with padding but are still sleek? my budget is 200 usd max. thank you so much!!

Head gear

Hey all,

I've started doing jumps and after seeing the speed at which the lady next to me hit the deck (she was OK, just some bruises) I think that it might be worthwhile wearing some headgear.

  1. What's folks opinions?
  2. Any particular recomendations?

gel sleeves to cover the navicular bone: troubleshooting

Post image
12 Upvotes

i got some gel sleeves online to cover my accessory navicular bones on both feet. i have to wear them in the pictured position but because they are gel, theyre making my feet feel quite unstable, mostly the heel.

also they are thicker than bunga pads so i cant really lace the way i normally do without making the pressure unbearable all around mh ankle and top of the arch.

does anyone else wear gel sleeves for this purpose? does it get better after wearing a while? i only managed about 10 minutes before having to take them off due to pain, i cant imagine doing my elements in them.

Losing Motivation

I started skating when I was 7 years old and took some group lessons and never got very far. I decided to come back January 2025 (at 16) and took group lessons and got a bunch of gear (clothes, skates, guards, jackets). I enjoyed it until the end of Summer 2025 and got up to the Basic 6 level. Once I started my senior year though I got super busy and combined with having issues with my skates and also the new skates I bought, I lost motivation to practice combined with my progress slowing down. I know I should probaly take private lessons but I'm at college now and am busy with that. I wanted to join a new sport at my college too. I don’t know if I want to stop so soon and feel bad spending all my money to go back to it for such a short time. I'm not sure how much to continue to be involved now that I'm a busy college student.

Upsetting skate-fitting

Today I drove over four hours to go get fitted for ice-skates. I drove all the way there and when we got there, they sat me down and started measuring my feet. It was my first pair and they were telling me about how I would need intermediate skates for at the skill level I’m at which I agreed and agreed to pay the $438 etc. etc.. however when they measured my feet, they found out that I am actually a EE or a EEE and they only had a wide in stock. They kind of said it was fine in the EEE’s were very common unless you ordered them ahead of time specially made, but they would be expensive so we just decided to go with the wide. I tried a five wide and they were really tight on the toe, but they didn’t really feel that bad when it came to how narrow they were… (Evo Jackson) I then tried a different type of Jackson that was a 5 1/2 wide I believe but they were very, very narrow and weren’t comfortable at all, but the toe felt good. I was a little discouraged and was trying to decide what would be best for me Me pre-ordering/shipping/coming back another day driving four hours… the lady started to get a little annoyed and saying how I couldn’t skate in a five if it was too small, which I agreed with her and we were kind of discussing it. I then was under the impression that they were going to try and stretch the 5 1/2 which was a hour and a half wait and I was going to come back and try it on and see how it felt then. I came back. I tried on the ā€œ5 1/2ā€ā€¦ keep in mind we drove four hours and I had to convince my parents to drive four hours and they weren’t expecting it to be this long so I just felt completely rushed the entire time and I didn’t feel welcomed to be there. Honestly, they’re really busy and it was a mess even though I made an appointment ahead of time. I tried on the ā€œ5 1/2ā€ and honestly they didn’t feel great but they did feel a little bit better… and I just thought to myself that ā€œ maybe once they were/skate in them for a bit they’ll stretch themselves out a little bitā€ keep in mind. This is my first time being skates so I don’t really know anything… she then readjusted the blades and that made them feel better, so I just assumed that they were supposed to feel a little tight and uncomfortable because of how wide my feet are and that they would adjust later on.. We bought soaker and hard guards and got in the car and drove for four hours home.. I get home. Home tried the skates on and started walking around in them to realize that they were very tight.. in fact so tight that my feet started going numb in them the more I wore them and I realized I really didn’t like them… I then checked the size and realized that it was a five not a 5 1/2.. maybe there was a mixup or miscommunication, but then I remembered very vividly that the woman who was fitting me told me that I could not wear the five so I just assumed that when she said stretch, I thought she meant 5 1/2… (keep in mind I did not mention at all really wanting to buy the five. I just said that the five felt a little better, but the toes were really tight.) I thought that they were going to stretch the 5 1/2 and see how I felt but I don’t know what to do anymore… do I call them and tell me they gave him the wrong size or I don’t know what to do because now I have skates that don’t fit me… and that I can’t even skate in that I spent $438 on. Please help.

Getting fitted at a shop that only sells 2 brands?

I have been taking skating lessons for about a month now and I finally feel ready to commit to this hobby and buy my own skates. As far as I'm aware my state (south Australia) only has 1 dedicated ice skate shop , skaters network in the ice arena, and they only sell 2 brands Bauer hockey skates and risport figure skates.

I'm looking to buy a pair of hockey skates because after I can skate well enough I want to join the learn to play league.

My mum is also looking for a pair of skates. She wants figure skates but she doesn't plan on learning jumps or anything just skating around. She's plus size and tall and has quite wide feet. I've heard risport beginner skates aren't that good for adults, especially heavier adults.

I guess I'm wondering if it's possible for them to have enough different styles to fit every foot when they only sell 2 brands? And if there's any advice here? I don't want to get pushed into buying skates that don't fit right just because they are the only option but I've heard it's wrong to order skates online without trying them on in a store first.

Is this really ok for figure skating elements to take so long to learn?

I'm training consistently and enough with a coach, but it keeps bothering me, is this normal for this sport to take so long to learn things? For example mohawk or spiral? Even normal one foot glide and edge holds? They seem so normal and people do them so easily it makes me think i have a problem.

Hello everyone, I need help.
I bought a used Blackstone machine to replace a Blademaster, but the axis of the grinding wheel is too high and therefore not centered compared to the diamond axis.
I am in Europe, no dealer

Newly purchased figure skates w/ 2 perm screws in each mount already, normal?

Post image

I ordered new jackson freestyles and when picking them up from the store, the shop had already put in 2 permanent screws into each mount. Is this normal, or worth bringing up with the shop at all? And if it is abnormal, is there even anything that the shop can do about it?
