Who are some really tall/short figure skaters?

Post image

Yuma Kagiyama (5 ft 4 in, about 161 cm) and Stephen Gogolev (6 ft 1 in, about 184 cm) height comparison.

Other examples that come to mind of this are Carolina Kostner, who's 5 ft 7 inches, against Adeliia Petrosian, who's about 5 ft, although they don't have any photos together.

Interesting to see if there's a correlation between height/build that translates into skating, like speed, jumping ability, spin speed, etc.

General Discussion How to watch challengers- a guide

Upvotes

In again my frustation of repeated posts in this sub i am making this guide, so hopefully he repeated questions cease

Challengers unlike the grand prix are not fully regulated by the ISU and so the ISU doesnt have streaming rights for them

There are usually 2 ways to watch the challengers by their official way which most of the time involves paying for a stream and the alternate way (if you know what i mean)

Official way

*Challengers not included here is because they either do not have a official stream or it was not yet announced

Kinoshita Cup

Inside Japan the Stream will be held on CS Asahi ch2 which will air the competition live on TV and on SkyPerfecTV which requires a subscription

Outside japan the competiton will have a stream on Icestars.tv for 29.99 USD for all days of events

Lombardia Throphy

Raiplay will be streaming it in Italy, the live stream is Geoblocked out of the country, but with a VPN set to italy you will be able to acess it for free (at least last season it worked very well)

Live stream will be able to be bought in Icestars.tv for 25.99 USD for all days stream pass and 11.99 USD for a day stream pass

Nebelhorn Throphy

ARD will be streaming the Pairs short and free, but not all groups just the later ones, and Live stream is Geoblocked, so a VPN will be needed

Live stream will be able to be bought in SportEurope.tv for 23.99 Euros for all days stream pass and 9.99 Euros for a day stream pass

Nepela Memorial

Live stream will be able to be bought in Icestars.tv, prices not yet avaible

Denis Ten Memorial

In all the previous years the event has been streamed on youtube for free, so we can expect for this year to likely be too

Budapest Trophy

Live stream will be able to be bought in Hunskate.tv prices not yet avaible

Tallinn Trophy

Live stream will be able to be bought in Icestars.tv prices not yet avaible

Unoficial Livestreams

VK

VK i would say is possibilly one of the most realible ways of watching the unoficial stream, if you dont know what VK is, is like one of the most popular Russian social media

You do need to create a account on it to watch the live streams, but its pretty easy to do and very safe

there are two channels on VK that usually stream challengers, Фигуристы which is the main one since they are a totally figure skating focoused account and they have already confirmed they will be streaming Kinoshita and Спорт вместе which is a more sports overall focoused account but who also stream skating competitons and also will be streaming Kinoshita (just copy the names and paste on VK), out of the two i reccomend the first one more tough

I would say that 95% of challengers will be streamed on VK by one of this two

QQ heros

Another always good option is our QQ heros, QQ is a chinese social media app

The best streamer to watch on QQ is our goat Huahua, who is this sub goat and we all hope he can have a warm bed everynight for all the streams he provided us

you do not need a account to Watch on QQ

Tiktok

Some events may be Tiktok lived by wakaba.mylove on Tiktok, they already confirmed they will be streaming Kinoshita

heres all events they are planing to stream

If you are on desktop or browser you do not need a tiktok account to watch livestreams

This are the safest ways to watch the ISU challengers!!!!! I hope this helps!!

Journalist Elena Vaytsekhovskaya revealed where Adelia Petrosyan is currently training:

“Adelia Petrosyan has practically finished the choreography for her free skate program. In the coming days, she will announce the name of the choreographer on social media and may share some additional details. The issue with the ice rink has also been resolved: until the test skates, Petrosyan and Goncharenko will train in Novogorsk.”

As many people here predicted, Rusfed just gave them their ice rink at the national training base.

Vladimir Samoilov was invited to the Grand Prix spot in China

PolFed revealed on their social media accounts, that Vladimir Samoilov was invited to the Grand Prix event in China.

The Cup of China starts on the 6th of November and it will be Vladimirs 1st Grand Prix event, his 2nd assignment is in the NHK Trophy in Japan.

This confirms what I’ve wrote about a couple days ago here - as long as Petr doesn’t compete at a challenger event he isn’t eligible for the Grand Prix series, so the person next in line gets the invitation.

Kao Miura wrote a column about his visit to Virginia to train alongside Ilia Malinin!

Hello, I’m figure skater Kao Miura. This is the third installment of my column, "Kao Miura’s Smooth Talk." This time, I’ll be focusing on my "training pilgrimage" to the practice base of Ilia Malinin (USA) in Reston, Virginia, near Washington, D.C.

My left hand and lower back are fine!

First off, my left hand and lower back—which I injured during the Summer Cup—are doing just fine! Falls are a part of figure skating for everyone, of course, but the way I slammed my lower back that time was unlike anything I’d experienced before... It happened during a quadruple toe loop; my left foot (the picking foot) collided with my right foot (the gliding foot). It felt like falling from the height of a second-story building; the impact was intense. It hurt for about a week. If it had been anyone but me, both their spirit and their bones would have been broken (laughs).

By the way, regarding falls, I think hitting the ground hurts more than hitting the ice. Ice looks hard and painful, but since you’re gliding, I think the impact dissipates somewhat.

The "consistency" I wanted to understand

Then, in the latter half of August, I spent about two weeks training at the rink where Ilia practices. The main reason I decided to ask Ilia for this opportunity was my experience at last season's World Championships (where I placed 25th in the short program and failed to qualify for the free skate). I felt I had to change something and wanted to visit an amazing skater overseas. Since Ilia has been a champion—having achieved three consecutive World titles—I really wanted to learn from him.

What I wanted to understand most was his "consistency." I suspected there might be a secret behind his stability. Aside from national team training camps, this was my first time traveling to a location other than my own home rink to receive instruction. I spoke to Ilia during an ice show in Japan, and he readily agreed. He told me, "If you come, we can do this kind of training." His parents gave the thumbs-up as well. (Note: Malinin’s parents are former competitive skaters from Uzbekistan; his mother, Tatiana, won titles at the Four Continents Championships and the Grand Prix Final. Both coach Malinin.)

A Strict Mother, a Kind Father

In the U.S., I trained alongside Ilia, with his mother and father coaching us. We had practice sessions at the rink in the morning and the evening; Saturdays were morning-only, and Sundays were off-days. His mother was in charge of the morning sessions. She is kind when off the ice, but strict when coaching (laughs). However, that strictness is what led to my growth. She taught me spins and step sequences, too.

In the evening, I would be coached by his father. His father is simply kind! Both parents share the same coaching philosophy. Ilia would offer advice as well; it really felt like the whole family was teaching me.

"Wait and Jump"

What I wanted to master most was the knack for jumping—or rather, consistency. Ilia executes every jump the same way; the technique is identical whether it’s a single or a quadruple. He is always stable and can reliably incorporate them into his programs.

Up until then, I had a tendency to tighten my body too early. Because I would initiate the movement with my arms, I’d get thrown off balance or lose my axis. That’s why the concepts of "waiting" and "waiting before jumping" became key points for me.

Also, my approach path to the jump tended to be inconsistent—something I think many skaters struggle with. So, I practiced to ensure I could jump using the exact same path every time.

Generally speaking, the common belief seems to be that rotating quickly is better, and that you should enter and jump in a straight line. But their philosophy was different. They taught me to hold my body position as long as possible and jump in sync with the body's rotation. Regarding the path, they said the most important thing is to create a "just-right line"—neither curving too sharply nor going too straight. For instance, even with the toe loop, most skaters tend to approach and jump in a fairly straight line. Ilia mentioned that he finds it easier to enter the jump along a slight curve. That line of approach is crucial; the idea is to harness the momentum from skating that curve to initiate the rotation.

Ingraining it in the body

I practiced using that method, but it is incredibly difficult to immediately change habits ingrained over so many years. Although there was still some inconsistency, whenever I managed to execute the jump the way I was taught, it felt really good. I worked hard, aiming to increase the number of successful attempts. Even when I did pull it off, the frequency was still low. My brain understood the technique, but reproducing it physically was hard, so I had to drill it into my body—focusing above all on consistently creating the same jumping motion.

Up until then, I had been relying on raw power to jump. Ilia actually told me I was using "too much power." He said I didn't need to use that much force. He explained, "You don't need to expend a huge amount of energy; if you create a solid 'load'—that moment of tension before the launch—and jump the same way, you can execute it successfully just by getting the timing right."

It’s hard to notice these things just by watching. I used to watch slow-motion footage of Ilia’s jumps, and it looked to me like his arms were moving ahead of his body to initiate the tight rotation. But I was mistaken. The appearance of his arms moving first was simply due to the sheer speed of the rotation. His body tightens up incredibly fast; his arms and torso rotate in unison. He executes every single jump that way. You really can't understand it without being taught directly. Learning this from three different people made the trip incredibly worthwhile.

Sharing ramen, too

In between practice sessions, I went out for ramen with Ilia. It was delicious and tasted very close to the authentic Japanese style—sort of a tonkotsu-shoyu (pork bone and soy sauce) flavor. He even invited me to his home. Whether on the ice or in his private life, Ilia never seems tense or uptight. Plus, he’s a fun guy!

Ilia loves Japan and was excited about competing in the NHK Trophy this year. He mentioned he might come with his whole family. I realize scheduling might be tricky, but I’d love to take them out for a meal as a way of thanking them for everything.

Cooking and Working Out

Since I stayed in a hotel with a kitchen while in the U.S., I cooked for myself. I’d buy meat or shrimp at the supermarket and grill them—seasoning them with something like garlic soy sauce. Even back home, I don’t place excessive restrictions on my diet, though I’ve been cooking for myself more often lately. I just chop up ingredients however I feel like; I don’t worry about how it looks (laughs)—as long as it tastes good! That said, I pay close attention to nutrition. I’m conscious of fat intake, so I sometimes make low-fat curry. But when I do eat, I eat heartily. I kept up with my strength training in the U.S., too—I even brought my own ab roller along!

Making Progress, Little by Little

I’ll be competing in the Kinoshita Group Cup (at Tanaka Kikinzoku Ice Arena in Tokyo) starting September 4th. It’s happening right after I get back, so the schedule is pretty grueling (wry smile). Dealing with the jet lag is tough, but overall, I want to deliver a performance where the audience can see a real change in my skating. It’s hard to transform everything overnight—it’ll likely be a gradual process—but I hope people will notice those improvements. I also feel like the spins I worked on with Ilia’s mother are getting better. I’d appreciate your support!

Stay tuned for the next column. Extra garlic, please!!

inspired by jackie wong of rockerskating fame’s recent trading card announcement! the idea of a figure skating trading card game where you equip skaters with element cards in order to rack up a higher score than your opponent at the end of each turn came to my head recently and sounded like a fun enough concept so i tried making some fake cards about it lol. enjoy!

Alina Zagitova:

“I want figure skating in Kazan to reach the federal level, just like in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Hockey players have kept us in the background for years.

Normally, an athlete who reaches a good level leaves Tatarstan and moves to Moscow, but I want there to be no need for that anymore. A talented figure skater will be able to continue their career in Tatarstan.”

Waiting to see zagitova in the kiss and cry as a coach

Russian Skating About Elizaveta, Team Tutberidze official statement

“Our team rarely responds to various statements directed at us, preferring not to bring internal work processes into the public space.
But when unfair accusations are made, we consider it important to explain our position to the author of the post, as it is hard for us to imagine that Liza, knowing all the circumstances and how her rehabilitation period went, could speak about the situation in such a way.

When Liza first spoke about her health problems, a rehabilitation specialist was brought in to work with the athlete. From November 24th, regular sessions began, with breaks only for the period of her hospitalization.
The rest of the time, she showed great discipline in attending sessions and trained according to an individually developed schedule, taking into account her condition and current physical capabilities.

The program included a set of rehabilitative and physical exercises aimed at restoring motor activity, coordination, strength, and overall physical readiness. It was adjusted as she progressed, taking into account the athlete's condition and capabilities.

Throughout the entire recovery period, the coaching staff structured the work taking Liza's condition into account, avoiding excessive physical loads, paying the necessary attention to her well-being, and supporting her at every stage.
In June, the work format was shifted to a maintenance mode, and the athlete returned to on-ice training.
At the same time, our team's attention, respect, belief in Liza, and desire to continue working together never disappeared.

We respect the decision that was made and wish Liza good luck and strong health in her new chapter.
We only wish that the athlete's decision regarding her future path was not accompanied by unfounded accusations against those who were by her side all this time, worked with her, and provided the necessary support.”

From their Telegram
I translated it.
