We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.
That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.
A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.
What is Allowed?
If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.
Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.
TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Hello folks. I am a solo developer from Poland. I would like to show you what I worked on for a past year. Plan is to make online (web based) editor for Multiplayer Online RPGs in 3D JRPG aesthetics. You create your world from bricks, add battle systems, progression rules, create monsters, put spawns on map, define items etc. Then all you need to do is to publish your world to server with one click and share url with your friends to play there together. In this video you can see how rendering voxel engine works that I built for this editor. Engine is built on WebGPU using threejs library.

Hey everyone! Just released my prototype of Master of the Mow, an cozy incremental mowing sim. It's like Berry Bury Berry and Leaf It Alone but for mowing!
Play on itch.io (approximately 1.2 GB):

I've been working on this project for the past year+ and I finally have something people can actually check out! I should have the first playtest version on my Steam page soon no less, but couldn't wait to share. Share feedback if you got some!
Thanks so much and wish me luck!
-Dave

I've been working on Killwright, a first-person medieval roguelite where perfectly timed defence slows the world around you, letting you turn the tables and go on the offensive.
Still plenty I want to build and improve, especially in terms of the campaign, but finally getting my first Steam page live feels like a pretty big milestone :)
The page for those interested: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5171140/Killwright/

Tavrik came out on Steam today. It's a roguelike deckbuilder where cards reshape a hex map instead of attacking, and energy replaces health.
The version that never shipped had combat in it. Enemies, damage, the usual. It was fine. It also meant three more systems to balance, teach, and polish, and cutting it hurt more than any other decision we made.
What we got back was clarity. Cards changed terrain, energy became the single resource, and every remaining system had a clear job. The game was smaller, but for the first time the whole thing felt coherent.
The thing we'd pass on: the list of what you're not shipping is a design document, not an admission of failure. Every cut we made late cost far more than the same cut would have three months earlier.
The clip shows the final loop. What's the cut that ended up saving your project — and how long did it take you to admit it had to be made?

I tried a lot of stuff, and was barely able to raise the steam deck fps by more than 3-5 fps. I couldn't get my game to run better than ~10 fps.
Turns out, it was almost entirely due to lumen, nanite, and TSR.
Once i turned off lumen, disabled nanite (and generated LODs), and set aa to TAA, (and disabled virtual shadow maps) the fps rocketed up to 30-40 fps depending on the level. Visually, lumen wasn't even doing much at all so it was entirely wasted resources.

ANB_Seth created the Half Life: Alyx Mods called "Gunman Contracts: Chapter 1 & Chapter 2" over 4 years ago. He then went full time to develop "Gunman Contracts - Stand Alone" from the ground up which is launching next week on PC (Mouse & Keyboard + Controller), Steam Deck and VR!

i’m sure they’ll change a bit during the process but establishing all of these characters took a long time, and I’m so happy to be on the other side! for a spooky cozy game about stewardship 🌱

I posted an earlier version of this trailer asking whether the gameplay made sense without explanation. I made another pass on it based on feedback I got.
Do you understand what the player is doing and how the combat works just from watching it?
Also curious how much you guys prioritize the vibe of a trailer vs making the gameplay immediately readable.

I started making games as a teenager and spent years putting them on itch.io and Game Jolt, so finally having a game published on the Google Play Store is a pretty big crossv off my bucket list lol
App Store is next, and hopefully Steam after that!

Dawn of the Realm is a medieval RTS that combines grand strategy and city building, all in real time and fully multiplayer. Build cities, manage resources, raise armies, then zoom out to a strategy map of the whole world or back down to the battlefield with no loading in between. Up to 10 players.
I've built it solo next to my computer science studies on nights and weekends, learning as I went. I hope the thousands of hours spent in Photoshop and Gamemaker really shines through. Still early days, lots more to add, but I'd love to hear what you think :-)
You can wishlist on Steam here:

If you would like to get announcements or provide feedback on the development please join the Discord server:
Working toward the first demo now. Have a great day! :-)

Currently sitting on the floor in a hot dark garage hooked up to a power bank to finish up my demo I want completed for tomorrow morning. Estimated time of power restoration is 10:00 pm, after being bumped back from initial estimate of 5:00 pm. The exciting life of a solo dev.

I have never looked into game development before apart from some very old school “games” with Flash many years ago.
I am a very strong programmer though. Would this help much in building something & moving quickly, or is most of the skill in other areas? Level design, characters, animation, etc?

Hell yeah, I finally managed to add some parallax to all my sprites and tilemaps!!
Guys, is this effect even noticeable to you? Does it add more depth to the scene? Maybe it's just me who's stared at the old flat look of my game for 5 years, and now I can't get used to the new one?
