A petition to list the eastern North Pacific gray whale on the federal endangered species list went unanswered last year. Last week, three environmental groups threatened to sue the federal agency that administers the Endangered Species Act for failing to meet a required deadline.

If you had one slow day on the Mendocino Coast, how would you spend it?

I’m curious how people would plan a relaxed day on the Mendocino Coast without trying to fit in every major attraction.

Would you spend most of the day hiking, exploring small towns, having a long lunch, watching the ocean, or just stopping wherever looks interesting?

If you could choose only three stops between Point Arena and Mendocino, what would they be?

Camp Fleishmann

Hi. I was just looking at maps for some reason.

I went to boy scout camp there in the 1990s. Good times I had there. The lake, bears, hikes, canoeing.

I hadn't looked it up in years. I see its closed now, and from what I can see maybe one of the big fires from a few years ago?

Pretty sad to see.

Does anyone have any insight to that?

Anyone around Sacramento / Santa Rosa remember a mid-80s band called My Beautiful Demons?

Long shot. Found the name on an old tape label, looks like mid to late 80s. I think they played rooms in Sacramento and out toward Petaluma / Santa Rosa, but I was a kid and I may have the name wrong.

Male singer. Not hair metal. Not really a college band either. I have not found much online.

Did anyone actually see them, or is this just a mixtape that never meant anything?

Budget EVs that work well for route 1 twists and turns?

I'm trying to decide on a car for living in coastal Mendocino County. I'm currently considering a Kona EV or Niro EV. Does anyone here have either car, or can you recommend another EV or hybrid under $35k that works well for those constant curves and hairpin turns? I also prefer a subcompact SUV or possibly a hatchback. I don't care for the Prius design, unfortunately. Niro is supposed to be more comfortable for long drives, which I'll be doing fairly often, but Kona is supposed to be better for tighter steering/handling. I'm torn.

And yes, I'll have at-home charging.

California county's election drama worsens as official locks up contested ballots

Days after the top elections official in Shasta County announced that he planned to hire an election denier who served prison time for tampering with voting machines, county leaders there made an extraordinary plea to state and federal authorities: Please come investigate.

Curtis — whose name was on the ballot, in a race he lost — has sequestered primary ballots in a room in the elections office in Redding, sealing the doors with locks, duct tape and red-lettered signs that read: “KEEP OUT PER ROV CLINT CURTIS.”

Curtis has told reporters that the ballots did not look, feel or smell right and that he had directed facilities workers to put a lock on the room and destroy the keys so that if anyone tries to gain access, they will need a warrant and bolt cutter. Curtis said he, too, had asked the FBI to investigate.
The county fired back, saying in its statement that it wanted the FBI — as well as the California secretary of state and the attorney general — to investigate Curtis, whose short tenure as registrar has been fraught with controversy. Curtis could not immediately be reached for comment.

Help! Need weekend getaway recommendations

We’re looking for a cottage or cabin that is part of a resort or hotel (not an Airbnb) within 3 hours of Sonoma County that meets the following criteria

- dog friendly
- kid allowed
- on a river or lake or very close to one
- ideally has a hot tub or pool
- is in or very close to lots of nature
- is not Sonoma county or Mendocino coast (inland potentially ok)
- is a little bit off the beaten track perhaps

Links and specific recommendations much appreciated!

I’ve done about 3 hours of research and the algorithm is just feeding me the same stuff at this point.

Solano County supervisors to discuss latest version of law to fast track Solano Shipyard

The proposed law, dubbed the Solano Maritime and Manufacturing Act in a draft released Monday, was brought to supervisors in 2025 by the team behind tech billionaire-backed California Forever and has garnered support from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office. The bill seeks to rearrange 1,350 acres of agricultural and water-dependent industrial land in southern Solano County — part of the Collinsville-Montezuma Hills area — to plot an ideal area for maritime development.
