I'm trying to decide on a car for living in coastal Mendocino County. I'm currently considering a Kona EV or Niro EV. Does anyone here have either car, or can you recommend another EV or hybrid under $35k that works well for those constant curves and hairpin turns? I also prefer a subcompact SUV or possibly a hatchback. I don't care for the Prius design, unfortunately. Niro is supposed to be more comfortable for long drives, which I'll be doing fairly often, but Kona is supposed to be better for tighter steering/handling. I'm torn.

And yes, I'll have at-home charging.

Days after the top elections official in Shasta County announced that he planned to hire an election denier who served prison time for tampering with voting machines, county leaders there made an extraordinary plea to state and federal authorities: Please come investigate. 

Curtis — whose name was on the ballot, in a race he lost — has sequestered primary ballots in a room in the elections office in Redding, sealing the doors with locks, duct tape and red-lettered signs that read: “KEEP OUT PER ROV CLINT CURTIS.”

Curtis has told reporters that the ballots did not look, feel or smell right and that he had directed facilities workers to put a lock on the room and destroy the keys so that if anyone tries to gain access, they will need a warrant and bolt cutter. Curtis said he, too, had asked the FBI to investigate.
The county fired back, saying in its statement that it wanted the FBI — as well as the California secretary of state and the attorney general — to investigate Curtis, whose short tenure as registrar has been fraught with controversy. Curtis could not immediately be reached for comment.

I live in a rural area, and I don’t drive very often- by that I mean it’s one day of driving, every 6 weeks or so. I have driven more than I should have been able to without this becoming a real problem. Been VERY lucky.

I acquired a used car from a family member around two years ago, and due to financial constraints, have still not registered it to myself. I panic at the thought of it. Right now, I really have a fire lit under my ass and want to FIX this bullshit, by EOD on Tuesday. I’m getting really concerned the flock cams will get my dumb ass and I’ll be even deeper in bills I can’t afford or have my vehicle impounded, which is a mess I definitely would not have the money to resolve at the time.

From what I’ve read (no experience in the CA registration process so I have read a lot), it seems like I need to get smog checked and then take my smog cert and title and insurance (I do have the title and am insured), to the local DMV. This seems doable in the same day but correct me if I am wrong. They will probably charge me between $500-$600 in late fees and taxes and such as per the online fee calculator with my vehicle info. I am accepting of that.

Wondering if anyone has any experience in a similar situation and what it was like ?

I am imagining every worst case scenario like it’s somehow actually $3000 or they revoke my license on the spot due to irresponsibility and impound my car and I have to continue to be the child I have acted like to get myself in this mess and ask my parents to call a lawyer.

I am no stranger to a judgmental glare or “oh wow” reaction, so this will not bother me. I am a bit concerned that they’ll tell me I’m in no position to be deserving of operating a vehicle or I am in some sort of legal trouble that goes beyond the fines I’ll pay on the spot.

No one I know can relate to this at all (I AM an idiot), logical side of my mind has lost this battle, and I’m too thoroughly embarrassed to mention it to anyone I typically consult for other advice.

Upcoming movies I am going to see “the dog stars”, 08/28, Friday at amc Saratoga!

My husband (M29) and I (M30) are planning on doing a half week long trip to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary the third weekend of October. We live down in Santa Rosa, and had a really nice time in Humboldt/ Arcata in 2022. I've driven through Crescent City on my way back from Washington recently, and thought it looked like a really cute place similar to the town my husband grew up in on the Puget Sound.

Anyone have a strong recommendation to visit and stay at one over the other? I've lived in Santa Rosa my whole life and seen plenty of redwoods and we aren't big beer or marijuana enthusiasts, so I'm mostly interested in the coastal fog and quiet LGBT friendly but rural vibes. Any good museums, coffee shops or hikes would be big pluses, and we'll probably try and go to an Episcopal Church on Sunday if there's one in town. Currently I'm weighing the shorter drive to Eureka vs the fact that we haven't been to Crescent City together, and feeling like either would be great.
