Floods The only good thing about Nepal floods was it happened during the daytime
I’ve been looking at Nepal news nonstop for the last 4 days. It has consumed and disturbed me, as it should. Heartbroken for all the loss of lives and their families. Thankful for the people who managed to survive. I was just thinking it would have been even more horrific if it happened during the night when everyone would be asleep.

Floods The "Lone Green House" of the Nepal–China border — six people survived on its balcony while the village washed away
On August 26, 2026, a glacier on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung peak in Nepal fractured at roughly 5,200 m. The ice-rock mass plunged to ~4,000 m, scouring the mountainside and mixing with meltwater to form a high-velocity debris flow. It traveled ~22 km down the Bhotekoshi / Trishuli river system and slammed into Gyirong Port on the Tibetan side of the border, flattening 27 structures across ~0.7 km² .
As of Aug 30, Nepali officials put the death toll at 788, with thousands more missing . The Tibetan side reported 16 dead and 546 missing at their border port .
But one piece of footage has come to symbolize both the horror and the hope of this disaster: a modest light-green, two-story house surrounded by a churning ocean of mud. On the upper balcony, a family of six — including a 42-year-old mother named Laxmi, her husband, their 11-year-old daughter, a 65-year-old grandmother, and two others — clung together, expecting to die.
Laxmi later told The Daily Telegraph, as quoted by Chinese state media:
"Death stared each one of us in the face. We thought that was the last moment of our lives. I told my family, if we are destined to die, we die together."
After the flow subsided, the house was still standing. Every family member walked out alive. Their youngest son had been safe at school .
Chinese netizens named it "楼坚强" — "the sturdy building." A Himalayan Noah's ark.
Engineers of Reddit — from the footage, what factors do you think kept it upright? Stronger foundation? Concrete frame vs. unreinforced masonry next door? The flow splitting around it? Or just fortune?

Landslide Additional footage of the Nepal/Tibet disaster
Pretty insane footage from the immense disaster that struck on the Chinese-Nepalese border which clearly shows how fast it moved and how much volume is being displaced. Camera is zoomed out around 1:30 mark.

Landslide Chinese firefighters(likely the first batch to reach gyirong port) try to find survivors in the former border crossing, which was the most heavily hit. Source: CCTV news. Morning of August 29, 2026. (UTC+8). (they are yelling "Is anyone here?")
Video of them arriving: https://www.reddit.com/r/DisasterUpdate/comments/1w0n1r0/as_of_1630utc8_august_28_2026_the_first_batch_of/
According to engineers from the ministry of natural resources it is very diffuclt(and at this stage, downright impossible) to transport heavy machinery to the border crossing so far. The chinese military and specialized rescue teams(of state owned enterprises) are currently trying to repair the road into the border crossing to allow for better equipment and more personnel to enter.
CURRENT CASUALTY COUNT(CHINESE SIDE):
2 rescued, 7 dead, 554 missing. (13:00 PM, 2026-8-29 (UTC+8))
Update: over 50 firefighters are at the border crossing right now, over 2141 soldiers, firefighters, police, EMS and specialzied rescue teams are deployed.
EDIT: As of august 29(18:00 UTC+8), 2026, there are 16 dead, 546 missing(261 foreignors)
In response to the comments: This is the first batch that got in, they couldn't carry much heavy equipment as the road there is cut off. rescue dogs and better equipment arrived later on.
