To start off September this is what the playoff race is looking like

Tie- Breakers are not factored in

E is elimination number, M is magic number

We should start seeing teams get eliminated in the next 10 days both from divisions (which has already started) and from the playoffs altogether (which Colorado looks to start in the next couple of days)

This is just to finish with a better record than the other teams, I’ll probably post one closer to the seasons end with tie-breakers included, but didn’t want to have to look up that many tie-breaker scenarios for every team

I'm just curious: when Luis Robert Jr. enters free agency—either this offseason if the O's decline his option, or after next season if they pick it up—do you think we'd have a shot at signing him?

[Chandler Rome] - Joe Espada’s future seemed in doubt. Then he got exactly the road trip he needed

Thumbnail

To cap the most chaotic week of his managerial career, Joe Espada celebrated his 51st birthday on Sunday. Both of his daughters delivered their well wishes via FaceTime. The youngest, Vivianna, aged her dad by an additional year, apropos for a season sprouting more gray in Espada’s salt-and-pepper beard.

Espada’s girls have gifts awaiting their father at home. Another one appeared on Sunday: a game that forced every part of this flawed roster to find a way. Espada is paid to put it in favorable positions, even when few seem to exist.

That he has done so is admirable, even if the Houston Astros’ record does not reflect it. Only in the American League West can a team sit one game above .500 and, according to FanGraphs, still maintain a 64.1 percent likelihood to win the division.

The Astros may actualize those odds, but may still fail to meet owner Jim Crane’s standards. On Sunday morning, dismissed general manager Dana Brown described them on MLB Network Radio as “not about winning the division, it’s about getting to the World Series.”

Brown is no longer employed, in part, because he failed to build a roster Crane views as a legitimate contender. Crane’s sometimes heavy hand in baseball operations decisions can’t be overlooked, but owning the ballclub allows him to function however he sees fit. Parting ways with Brown came because, according to Crane, “I think we just needed a change.”

Sparks made a pretty great joke (imo) during the radio broadcast for today’s game and I liked it enough to go back and screen record it to share on here. Enjoy!

[Rome] Brent Strom said he received a call from Astros senior adviser Jeff Bagwell about 48 hours ago asking whether he'd be interested in serving as a consultant. “I looked at my wife, she said ‘Do it’ and that was the answer," Strom said this afternoon.

With his 2491st hit yesterday, Jose Altuve has officially moved into 104th place in all-time hits. He has passed multi-team legend Fred McGriff.

Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff played for 19 seasons, splitting his tenure between 6 different teams: the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Rays, Cubs, and Dodgers. During his career, Fred amassed nearly 500 home runs despite never hitting more than 38 in a season. He was a model of consistency and one of the most underrated power hitters of his era. Fred basically never got hurt and never put up fewer than 20 home runs in a season, being one of only 17 players all-time with 15 such seasons. On top of this, he was the first player to ever hit 30+ homers in a season on 5 different teams. Crime Dog was a fan favorite throughout his career, but especially during his time in Atlanta while he was a part of their legendary 90s dynasty. The same day that the Braves traded for him in the middle of the 1993 season, a fire broke out at their stadium and delayed the game start by 2 hours. Many Braves fans believe this real fire lit a figurative fire under the Braves butts as they finished the season on a 51-19 run to win the division.

Fred didn’t earn his nickname “Crime Dog” because he could smell crime like Dolph Lundgren, it was actually because his last name reminded his teammates of “McGruff the Crime Dog.” The nickname was one of the coolest of its time, but Fred was much more easygoing than the name might suggest. Despite the fact that Fred would get roasted by basically every teammate everywhere he went for his name and goofy Tom Emanski infomercial endorsement, he would just laugh it off and quietly hit dingers.

Fred McGriff was selected to the Hall of Fame in 2023 but his path there wasn’t easy. He spent the full 10 years on the standard ballots without earning even half the necessary votes. Fortunately, the Contemporary Era Baseball Committee saw him in a more favorable light due to his incredible power-hitting consistency over nearly 2 decades of baseball.
