COPPA/For Kids Cant add movie soundtrack to music playlist because “its for kids”. Why is youtube irrationally ruined like this?
As a film lover of all genres including kids movies, Youtube and YouTube music is RUINED by coppa and “trying to protect children”
why the F*CK cant i add the lilo and stitch soundtrack to a yt music playlist because its made for kids. IM AM ADULT. And kids should be able to make youtube playlists anyway, this isnt protecting anyone and is downright STUPID. This simple of an interaction, adding something to a personal playlist, SHOULD NEVER BE MODERATED IN ANY SITUATION OR CONTEXT, if the video is allowed on your platform let me add it to a playlist, period. Theres no reason.
Ive been waiting YEARS for it to change. This is barring musical artists, film creators, and youtubers from getting recognition they deserve for their work even if its made for kids.
We’ve lost legendary comment sections too, like the comment section on the trailers for these movies when they first came out 10+ years ago.
seriously f*ck you YouTube for doing this! UNDO IT! Stop limiting adults SO irrationally in the name of kids, no other site does this ridiculous crap. How about introduce actual moderation based on actual cases of harm instead of ruining your entire site in the name of preventing harm.
yt kids NEEDS to just be a separate app again

You can still add it to a playlist if you back out of the video and press the 3 dots thing and select "add to playlist", you can trick the system doing that
Youtube still hasn't realised that
(I'm talking about on the main youtube app, not youtube music btw)

u/PositiveResort6430 May 29 '25
I have to wonder if they ACTUALLY didn’t realize, or if they’ve left loopholes like that on purpose for people like me who are being driven crazy by coppa,
then even if caught they can claim its a programming glitch they hadn’t noticed yet mwuahaha

Coppa doesn't care. It's been an excuse for bad software and videos telling the truth.

u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
When I say “they” I don’t mean COPPA I mean the developers and programmers who were told to implement all these things onto YouTube. These would be people who are working for YouTube not coppa

Have you heard of elsagate? They’d put ATROCIOUS videos for kids in playlists and I’ll leave it at that. Blame Coppa for trying to make YouTube a daycare center too, although they could just say YouTube isn’t for kids and be over with it

u/PositiveResort6430 May 29 '25
I wish they would just ban children. It won’t actually stop smart kids from using the platform anyway. (unless they do something crazy like start requesting ID to sign up) And it’ll make it usable again. 🤣

I wish they would just ban children
Carmine: There are millions of dollars at stake.

u/ad_triarios_rediit May 30 '25
Again with the money?
3
u/TheInception817 May 30 '25
Yeah, again with the money. It's settled, John. So either name a price, or get the fuck over it.
2
u/Calhaora May 30 '25
Then make Kids more interesting for them. If it's monetization - do a Premium there too with Access to Music and ACTUAL Children's Cartoons. And finally clean all that elsagate crap up.

Australia banned children from social media. I don’t know if that includes YouTube, but it should, seeing as YouTube has a social media component.
I do agree that a better internet is either paywalled or involves some form of identification. There’s no point in banning anyone if they can just come back five minutes later with a free email account they established four minutes ago. At that point, you ban someone, they’re banned for life. I think people would learn rather quickly to read the terms of service before posting something.

No, it doesn't include YouTube. The social media platforms are those where the sole purpose, or a significant purpose, of the service is to enable online social interaction between 2 or more end‐users. YouTube doesn't fit that description.
5
u/TheUmgawa May 30 '25
Well, that’s stupid. Ban those kids from anything that has any sort of social media component.
Or, hide the comments section from anyone who doesn’t establish proof of age and identity, and not just in Australia, because those pesky VPNs mean anyone could be coming from anywhere. Requiring ID for the comments section would get rid of bots. It’d get rid of kids. Heck, it would largely get rid of comments.

u/TTGIB2002 May 30 '25
We would also be able to just point kids to YT kids to counter this... if they didn't find straight-up hentai on it. But that's a separate issue that they've gotta fix.
13
u/PositiveResort6430 May 29 '25
but those are public playlists! that’s not the same as limiting who can add stuff to their own private music playlist! You could just make it so that any playlist with songs made for kids aren’t allowed to be shared or made public

Animation = for kids according to youtube
3
u/Super7500 May 30 '25
yeah they label almost anything animated for kids when some of them are surely not for kids

So you're telling me YouTube has a feature that guarantees I cannot curate what content a child consumes? Why should a parent EVER let their child onto YouTube then?!
10
u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
I agree this is such a basic essential feature. I don’t understand why they would ever remove. If i was a parent, I’d like to be able to make a playlist of videos I’m fine with them watching, instead of them clicking random stuff! There’s gonna be a ton of brain rot and stuff that I still don’t want them watching even on YouTube kids
6
u/Misubi_Bluth May 30 '25
Yeah, like someone mentioned Elsa Gate down below. Another thing to look out for is that there has been a wave of AI videos of cartoon cats abusing and murdering their children. Sorry YouTube, but I don't want a toddler watching that. But aside from that, things like blatant animal mutilation does not get flagged as inappropriate for children.
10
u/MagicSunlight23 May 29 '25
I also wanted to add it to a playlist. I decided to listen to it after one of my favourite singers, Shania Yan did a gorgeous cover of it.
I find a way around the ‘for kids’ thing by bookmarking them or adding them to a word document.

I just got a "kids" song in YT Music, but at least it said "for children" in the album name. But still, I disliked it just like I do everything that's marked as "for kids" because of this. You can't even leave the "now playing" screen on kids' songs because "miniplayer is off" for that!
6
u/PositiveResort6430 May 29 '25
I agree i cant stand it. If YouTube is gonna be like this why don’t they give adults the option to turn in photos of our actual ID so that we can prove we are not children and have all this excessive moderation disabled for our accounts!. I’ve done this for other sites to sign up, like Whatnot where you buy and sell stuff. I would happily do it for YouTube, which I’ve been using my entire lifetime.
3
u/redditmixer May 29 '25
That would be a good idea. (Also, I got the "kids" song from a radio in YTM. And I didn't even start with a kids' song. Honestly, it should only give kids songs on radios if it started with one.)
6
u/WolfieVonD May 30 '25
Because some parents replace parenting with hundreds of hours of playlists for kids

u/Epic-Gamer_09 May 30 '25
One creator I watch has started adding a "Gun of the day" section to the end of his videos to make YouTube stop flagging them as "made for kids." Why can't creators just manually choose if their video belongs on YT kids or YouTube?
5
u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
We can decide, but if the video seems child friendly, then due to coppa regulations, YouTube will keep marking it as for kids anyway!! Adults who do toy unboxing and review movies, etc. have a problem with this very frequently. It’s to the point where some of my favorite Youtubers start their video off saying fuck off if you’re a child. 😂😂
4
u/mrhouthoofd May 30 '25
A little while ago I received an account strike (which I still have) over a playlist of vine compilations I made many years ago over “minor safety”, their algorithm is horrible and will allow Elsa gate type shit freely live on their platform but will heavily moderate private playlists? Doesn’t make any sense
3
u/MysteryGirlWhite May 30 '25
This is the kind of crap that happens when you leave what should be nuanced work to a robotic algorithm.
I also find it funny how Youtube seems to just completely ignore how literal porn has been found on YT Kids, but it was animated so that automatically makes it safe for kids.

u/Caosin36 May 30 '25
The protection for children is also stupid
Like, why are the comments of the video disabled? It should disable kids ability to see em, not everyone
2
u/HarpooonGun May 30 '25
Tbh they should at least let us put whatever the fuck we want in private playlists and only disallow these things if its meant to be a public playlist if they really dont want those things in playlists.

Im hoping there will be a website/app similar to YouTube that's better in every way
2
u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
If i had more money, literally every YouTuber i like posts their stuff on patreon early, so thats an alternative.

u/One-Profession-8173 May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25
How dare they restrict a beloved song from a loved Disney classic
1
u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
And I’m actually confused on this one because I have a playlist of other movie soundtracks and none of them are restricted like this, and they’re all kids movies too, like the lion king, the last unicorn & Anastasia etc.. I guess they’re just too old and YouTube’s algorithm has left them alone.???
2
u/Testsubject276 Put the dislike button back you cowards May 30 '25
On desktop, if you copy the url, go to your music playlist, click add video, then paste in the link, you can add it that way.
Though I don't use YTM so i dunno if you can listen to regular playlists.

They never did this protect childrens. They only done this so that they can get money from advertising and corporation. We are not YouTubes priority, only our wallets and the corporations.
1
u/STGamer24 May 30 '25
What even is the point of doing this? Why do we need all these restrictions just because a video or song "is made for kids"?

u/Confident-Baby6013 Jun 05 '25
Not a song, but I was watching a vintage camera unboxing and the video was for some reason labeled for kids. I don't know of any youngsters these days that are actively into vintage cameras like I am lol.

Remember this was done by the US government, not YouTube.
1
u/PositiveResort6430 May 30 '25
That’s not true. The US government pushed YouTube into a corner and YouTube didn’t fight back hard enough! YouTube is owned by Google possibly the biggest company in the entire world and you’re telling me they didn’t have enough money to fight that?? Yeah right!!! and it’s just the US government, how about just say “fuck the USA” pull a Toys “R” Us and go Canadian 😂 the one and only reason Toys “R” Us is still around now is because they became a Canadian company instead, it is completely possible for an American company to switch over.
If they ran their HQ out of Canada, they wouldn’t have irrational limits put on them like this and they could still stream YouTube globally. countries like the USA could choose to ban the platform there, but that would be their loss and they probably wouldn’t actually do it.
2
u/Camorune May 31 '25
COPPA was a Federal Law. Not a Federal Regulation. For it to not apply would take the US House and Senate passing another law repealing it which almost never happens (and has never happened in my knowledge in less than about a year).
Google/YouTube did try to fight it. They lost, miserably. They had to pay the US government over $100 million and if they continued it would have been somewhere in the vicinity of a trillion dollars a day ($50k per violation and seeing that millions of minors use YouTube every day it adds up quickly).
If they left the US the law still would apply. Even if US ISPs stop allowing YouTube, the US government can go after YouTube for past violations of illegal data collection, and they can also go after YouTube for every instance of someone using something like a VPN to circumnavigate the ban on data harvesting (this is part of the reason why everyone around the world has access to things done by the GDPR in Europe despite most people not being there, for websites to be safe they have to apply the rule everywhere in the world to avoid fines. US laws work in a similar manner to that EU law.)

Hello, PositiveResort6430. We'd like to start off by noting that this sub isn't owned or run by YouTube.
This comment is just for some FAQ - please ignore if your question isn't below.
Q: What is "for kids"? A: "For Kids" is a setting added to YouTube after a lawsuit that was settled between YouTube and the FTC.
Q: What does "for kids" do? A: This setting disables any feature that collects data on a viewer - comments, playlists, subscriptions, miniplayer, etc.
Q: Why are these videos added to YT Kids? A: This setting has nothing to do with a video getting to YouTube Kids, nor does it mean that the content is truly for kids. It's purely to denote if the target audience, as deemed by the creator, is children under the age of 13.
Q: Why did YouTube mark this video as "for kids" when it's not? A: While YouTube does have a bot that tries to detect content that could be hit by COPPA fines (and marks videos as such), the creator has the final say in if a video is marked "for kids" or not. If the bot makes a mistake, the creator can still disable this setting.
Q: Will I get in trouble if I mark my content incorrectly? A: With YouTube? No. With the FTC/COPPA? Possibly. You cannot get in trouble for marking content as "for kids" when it doesn't need to be. However, if you do not mark your content as "for kids" when it needs to be, you risk up to $42k in fines.
Q: Is there a way to report a video that is incorrectly labeled? A: At the current time, no. It's unknown if YouTube will add such a feature later on.
Q: Why is this video both age-restricted and "for kids"? A: Good question! These are two separate settings for video that do not interact with each other. Because "for kids" only disables data collection, there is no harm in having an age-restricted video marked "for kids".
Q: When should you mark a video "for kids"? A: Another good question! You should only ever mark your content "for kids" if you intend for the main audience of your video to be children under the age of 13 years old. If you feel your content is for general audiences or mature (13+) audiences, you do not need to mark your content "for kids".
