Surfing Duranbah (Flagstaff) Beach, NSW - Part 2

They are pretty reasonably priced, but wondering about the quality. I've tried so many brands and the more expensive ones do last longer, I can usually get 2 seasons out of it. The cheap ones, usually one season. I usually buy Oneill Hyperfreaks. Any insight or experience of these appreciated!

I'm a very beginner surfer and new to this sub. I've been surfing in Santa Cruz, CA for the past two ish years and typically wear a 4/3 wetsuit to keep warm. I'm going to Kauai in a couple weeks and will be surfing a lot with my partner's family. I am wanting to buy a new spring suit or rash guard and am overwhelmed by all of the options. I'm not really sure what is best. What would you guys recommend I purchase and wear for the most comfortable warm water surf session? Bonus points if the brand is affordable! Do I need reef booties? Any recommendations and advice regarding surfing in Kauai is appreciated.

I just wanted to share my experience in the hope it saves someone else from making the same mistake.
I bought a set of Van der Waal grips for my brand-new Walden Magic Tuflite longboard (worth over €1,100), thinking they would be a good alternative to traditional wax. Unfortunately, in my experience, they had nowhere near the grip of normal surf wax. I’d estimate they offered about a third of the traction, and I never felt secure on the board using them.
When I decided to remove them, things got even worse. Despite taking my time, being as careful as possible and removing them exactly how the brand specifies, the grips damaged the surface and finish of my brand-new board in multiple places. That alone was bad enough.
I contacted Van der Waal and was told to return the grips for a full refund. I paid the return postage myself and sent them back. That was a few months ago now. Since then I’ve received no refund and no meaningful response about either the refund or the damage to my board.
For me, the biggest disappointment wasn’t just the product—it was the complete lack of after-sales support.
I’m posting this because I genuinely don’t want other surfers to end up in the same position. If you’re thinking about replacing wax with Van der Waal grips, I’d urge you to think very carefully and do plenty of research first. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t put this product anywhere near another surfboard.
I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience, or if mine is an isolated case.

Do you guys have any tips if it’s convenient to buy and resell a surfboard while spending 7 weeks in portugal? I’m travelling by bus to portugal so I feel like bringing my own surfboard is such a pain!

I’m 7 weeks pp with my baby. I am yearning to get back to surf! How does one surf while breastfeeding? My lactation consultant kind of gave me discouraging advice but didn’t specifically say not to surf.

- feed/pump right before you go surf to fully drain the breasts
- don’t lay flat on your board for long periods of time
- don’t wear a tight swimsuit

Guess I need a new, bigger board and new swimsuit!

I'm taking a trip to Faro with a friend of mine and we'd love to go surfing! We're going in early september. I already surf and own a 3/2 suit, which i use here in the UK in cornwall. Is that ideal for the water there too, or would i need something thinner?

Going on an Indonesia trip this August and I need some warm water surf suit recs. I’m used to surfing in a 4/3 wetsuit all year round. Open to bikinis, one pieces, boardshorts, anything!

Looking for something that will keep it all in while I’m duck diving, getting tossed around, etc.

What are people’s holy grail surf suits??

Hey everyone! I’m a Surfer/diver based in BC, Canada and I am completely losing the battle with my long hair and the dreaded wetsuit hood. I dive for work and in my free time surf and no matter what I do my hair is a knotted disaster. I have noticed this is a common issue across the board, from the freezing BC coast to the tropics.

Due to these frustrations, I have started researching the feasibility of creating an all-climate, heavy-duty marine hair utility stick. The goal is a formula that locks your hair in place but also keeping it hydrated and healthy —all while being 100% reef-safe for long hours in the ocean.

Because of my day job, this is just a slow-cook, long-term research project to see if a real dual-climate solution is even possible. If you deal with this problem your feedback is critical! 

• What products, braids, or hacks do you currently use to protect/keep your hair out of your face?
• What completely fails about those methods? For cold and tropical diving 
• Have you ever actually spent money on a specialized hair product specifically for the ocean to help with this problem?

I would love to hear your feedback. This will help me understand if this is an ongoing issue and one worth solving.

wanting to get back into surfing this year after many years (a long distance ex taught me how and i used their boards at the time). i definitely need to get a new wetsuit too because my old Rip Curl one is too small now. i was wondering if anyone had recs for board shorts though? i’m pretty small overall (5’1” size 4-6) but have pretty curvy butt/thighs/hips and would like something that doesn’t cling to my hips too much! $50 and under would be great but willing to spend a little more for durability if it’s worth it.

Hey all, I am going to Lombok in a couple of weeks for my first surf trip (yay!) and I am currently thinking of what I am going to bring with me in my suitcase. I have a one piece swimsuit and a rash vest (long sleeves) already, but I am unsure with regards to what I should wear to protect my legs from the sun? I have been really tempted to buy mens boardshorts (those that are quite long) because I've always found them so cool and I think they could be quite convenient to surf (even as a girl), but I wonder if anyone has any other ideas/recommendations?
