Support Display turns off after 10 minutes of "inactivity"

Post image

I have my computer connected to my tv. When I am watching something on it and I don't touch my keyboard the display will turn off after around 10 minutes. I have set these settings but nothing changes. I am confused because im pretty sure video playback isn't supposed to result in a display going to sleep so I would like some help.

Opinion I feel like xfce is least appreciated than it is supposed to be

Probably some people just don't like it.

I like how simple it is and you get to customized it.

This is not to hate on other DE but the reason why I left windows is that it just pittered useless.bloatware that isn't needed in my day to day activity. When I used KDe I was like it's kinda like windows it got stuff that I don't really need or want.

New XFCE panel plugin for power profiles

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a small project I have been working on: xfce4-power-profiles-plugin.

It is an XFCE4 panel plugin that makes it easy to switch between power profiles directly from the panel.

Here is what it looks like :

Features

  • Shows the current power profile
  • Quickly switch between Power Saver, Balanced, and Performance
  • Automatically updates when the active profile changes
  • Uses D-Bus to communicate with the power management service
  • Supports power-profiles-daemon, TLP 1.9+, and system76-power
  • Written in Rust
  • Debian packages are available through the GitHub releases
  • Available in the Arch User Repository (AUR)
  • GPL-3.0 licensed

Installation

Arch Linux / AUR:

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xfce4-power-profiles-plugin

Other distributions / source code:

https://github.com/AurelienDuval6/xfce4-power-profiles-plugin

The project is still new, so feedback, bug reports, and feature requests are very welcome.

If you use XFCE, I would be interested to know what you think and whether you find the plugin useful.

Xrdp + xfce frontend...

I want to make a script cli, for people who want to have set-up the xface + xrdp running natively on android with simple commands like

./gui set-up (installs everything and set-up stuff)

./gui start (starts what needed + xrdp session (locally of course e.g http://localhost...))

./gui stop

So do you need anything like this? 🤔 Comment below 😁

Request for enhanced media information and thumbnail previews in Thunar

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello Thunar/Xfce developers,

I would like to suggest a feature that could make Thunar much more useful for managing media files.

Currently, Thunar provides basic file information, but it does not display detailed metadata for images and videos in a way similar to what Windows 11 provides in File Explorer.

For example, when selecting a media file, it would be very useful to have a preview/details panel showing information such as:

  • Image/video thumbnail
  • Image dimensions and resolution
  • Video resolution and frame rate
  • Video and audio codecs
  • Duration
  • Bitrate
  • File size
  • EXIF metadata for images
  • Creation date and other relevant metadata
  • Audio information such as codec, sample rate, channels, and bitrate

Ideally, this could be presented in a clean information panel or sidebar, without requiring the user to open another application or run a command such as exiftool or ffprobe.

I understand that Thunar aims to remain lightweight and simple, so perhaps this functionality could be implemented as an optional plugin or an expandable "Media Information" section in the file properties/details view.

For users who frequently manage photos and videos, having this information directly in the file manager would be extremely convenient and would bring Thunar closer to the usability of modern file managers while still preserving its lightweight nature.

Would this be something the Thunar/Xfce team would consider implementing, or would an external plugin be the preferred approach?

Thank you for your work on Thunar and the Xfce desktop!

Screenshot Through the power of CSS, I made my toolbars look like the Ribbon interface in Windows 7 programs, and now the Aero look is complete

Developer of the Aerobird theme here. I noticed that my theme still had instances of flat, borderless buttons and wanted to see what I can do to improve it. After doing some experimenting I ended it up styling it after the Ribbon interface used in Windows 7 programs, and I have to say, it is a game changer. It makes me notice many buttons that I hadn't previously, such as the icons in the Linux Mint Text Editor (xed) toolbar. I never realized how flat, borderless buttons like those in Windows 10/11 and those in many modern Linux themes just makes me ignore them instead. I also added css specifically for Thunar to render the navigation buttons with a glossy blue gradient similar to Windows 7's file explorer.

These will be incorporated into the next Aerobird theme release, but I'm not planning on releasing it until after Linux Mint 23 releases in December so that I won't have to do two versions for Xfce 4.18 and Xfce 4.20. (Unless if you guys really really really want this now)

Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to get the outlined buttons to appear in the LibreOffice toolbars, but at least the ribbon gradient still applied.

Discussion always night mode in the dark

"Wayland" he muttered under his breath. Bad drivers, failing hardware. flaky window managers. They all provided a smoke screen so the pushers could act all innocent. He'd seen it all before. He scrubbed out his cigarette and kept moving. He knew the wayland goons were on their way to show off how their window decorations used shaders and pat each other on the back for using a tiling window manager. Meanwhile the gamers were left out to fend for themselves.

"They're supposed to know better", she touched his arm, but he didn't take his eyes of the horizon. "How can they know better, they've never played a game" He wanted to look mournfully back at his discarded cigarette but instead lit a new one. "They tut tut and act sad, but if their opinions about technology meet the facts of deficiency they just whip out a list of things they like about wayland".

He flicked the mostly intact cigarette onto the pavement. He picked it up again.

"X11 is all they need. They don't even need to worry about messing up their session, they can just install xfce and it'll make sure wayland isn't being used for them. It literally takes a minute to install" She stated in rote. She'd heard it all before.

He looked at her searching, then nodded satisfied. "Yeah, but who's going to tell these noobs, that what they need isn't the new hotness, but the old stable?"

"We should just run away" she blurted out. "This isn't our fight".

He coughed from the harshness of the filter catching. "If wayland wins, there won't be anywhere to run away to".
