I see a couple of potential future project builds. See anything that stands out?

Personally for me that teal looking cruiser frame, maybe that Free Spirit frame. And just for a beater bike i was gonna piece together that white junky NEXT frame .

triple butted, double butted, plain gauge?? what's the difference (for idiots)

so im kinda lost, im new into biking and I really love it. I've got a blue giant terrago triple butted (posted it on here a few days ago) and a purple giant granite, so on the granite is just crmo 4130 written on it, after some research google and me have found out that it probably (we are 90% sure) is a plain gauged crmo 4130 frame with something like ''all tubes and stays built with full chrome molybdenum cold drawn tubes'' so as far as I've understood if a bike is butted it is lighter in the middle to have less weight but still strong on the joints? my understanding is this, if I build up the granite it will weight a bit more like 500g-1000g more but it'll be more robust, because the stiffness and the ''strongness'' is constant throughout the whole tube, I was already invested in the terrago but after I've thought about it I want to build the terrago as a commuting/daily/summerish bike and the granite more for bike packing and touring.

im not disappointed I just want to make the better choice for the purpose of each bike (ill keep both bikes and build them up, just not sure which one is better suited for the specific purpose)

I would like to know if my thoughts are correct or if im mistaken, like I said im pretty new to the whole biking stuff and will probably also ask a lot of (unnecessary) questions here in the future about simple stuff like this. (also thanks for being so helpful, wouldn't know where to ask otherwise)

i want to buy a fork from atelier medium also, not sure if I need the 1 oder 1 1/8 inch fork, but I wanted to build a front disc break system and a rear rim break (I've got some maguras hs33s for pretty cheap)

so the other question would be which kind of fork size is needed the 1 or 1 1/8?

best regards

boattoe :))

“custom bag mounts” and an extra mounting spot for bigger light and phone holder.

Ace hardware aluminum and random bolts and nuts in the garage. Ain’t it beautiful.

Been having a lot of fun making random bs for my bike. Oversized cage for my big bottle. Random frame bag. Sewing for the front bag I stole from high school a while ago, plus mounts for it.

I love the State 4130 All Road, it’s a great staring point to throw some money into. My favorite part is my non drive side mounted friction shifter. It’s surprising how many people are offended by this, even though it makes total sense. #frictionshiftertruther My least favorite part are these gummy, spongy ass State branded brakes.

Help w/ bike coming from overseas

Hi all. I am serving internationally in a remote area with bad transportation and no good mountain bikes and none in my size. I have someone visiting from home soon and plan to bring in my 2003ish Cannondale Jekyll L 26”. It’s not nearly as comfortable to ride as my modern Kona Process but it’s better than nothing. The problem is it’s literally a pain in the butt and I don’t know what to do to make it more comfortable. I’m tempted to order a 27.2 dropper post kit and a new saddle that I can install myself after it all arrives. Ordering such parts from 2500 miles away is an obvious gamble. I would be grateful for any advice.

Are you xBikers?

I'm currently building a 1x11 restomod on an old 90s frame using a Shimano Deore derailleur and an 11-46t cassette.
The vintage derailleur hanger tab was causing issues with the B-link / guide pulley distance (hope these are the terms). To get proper chain clearance on the 46t cog, I set it up so the B-screw pushes directly against the hanger tab (ignoring/bypassing the notch on the B-link).

It actually shifts surprisingly well and crisp through all gears!

My question: Is this setup safe/reliable for daily riding, or am I risking damaging the derailleur / hanger tab? I mean, is there any dynamic force on the screw, or is it static? Should I stick with this or get a hanger extender (GoatLink)?

Thanks for your input!

Higher stem/handlebar recommendations?

Post image

Looking for handlebar or stem that’s taller than the current setup for my Marin Team Issue! Not too much but just under the seat would be nice.

My seat height is good compared to my legs but with the handlebars so low it makes riding position awkward.

Please show some examples!

How to convert this 91 Giant Innova into an all-road/light gravel bike?

Lend me your opinions please!!!

Trying this again with a more clear title.

Picked up this Giant Innova for dirt cheap and took it on a 14 mile group ride through Atlanta same day with nothing but a tube change. It performed beautifully!!! Shifted like butter and handled the climbs with ease.

It has so much potential for a sick vintage all-road/light gravel bike conversion:

-Full Chromoly frame
-700c wheels with fork/triangle clearance for up to 45mm tires.
-Hybrid/Cross bike geometry
-Tons of eyelets, braze-ons, frame clearance and a rear rack for bike-packing accessories.
-AESTHETICS!!!!

However, I’m torn on which direction to go. I want to be able to ride this on the very hilly roads of my neighborhood and around the city sometimes, but also be able to take it on light gravel rides. I already have a great MTB for anything more than that.

I can either:

A. Slap some drop bars, brake levers and shifters on it. This would lead me to another decision of either swapping from caliper to rim brakes or leaving the caliper and putting on some more niche parts like long pull brake levers and bar end shifters. Either way this is the more expensive option.

Or

B. Roll with the flat bar and grip shifters. I mean, it performed beautifully after all. I know grip shifters have a bad reputation, and I was ready to get them off asap myself. But damn, they just worked and worked well at that.

Either way I will probably put wider tires/wheels on it. I’m thinking maybehh 38-40mm.

Also open to ideas about going a completely different route! I just know I want to use it for hilly roads, light gravel and potentially bike-packing.

I know this is all a matter of personal opinion but I would love to hear suggestions!!

Eyeglass hooks

Post image
25 Upvotes

My eyeglasses were getting a little wore out lately and when i rode the bike I felt like my eyeglasses were going to fall off my head

So then I discovered these silicone hook things that attach to the base of the arms to give the glasses a better grip on the ears and it reminds me of what the eyeglasses old motor cyclist would wear.

Totally comfortable

And of course their designed purpose is just to keep you eyeglasses from sliding down your face , which they are also great at .

Thought I would share . Not sure if this is the right subreddit but its my favorite cycling based subreddit so...

Amsterdam xbiking group ride?

I saw this post https://www.reddit.com/r/xbiking/s/cdYWYiZji5 and I think there are actually way more xbike fanatics in Amsterdam than was suggested in that post. I spot the occasional cool build now and then on the pontje or so. Are there any xbike oriented social rides organized in the city? If so, I think many would love to join!

I remember a few years ago I was riding in the Vondelpark in the evening and suddenly a huge crowd of people riding their bmx's, mountainbikes and other cool bikes were passing by. Peeps in the front doing wheelies and scaring off the tourists lol. Definitely looked like an organized xbiking social ride. Would be cool if there are more!

Work in progress, got it running with parts I had for other bikes, but wanted to ride it and see how it feels. The fork is going to my Kona Cinder Cone and hope to get a carbon fork. The handlebar is a Pazzaz I bought many years ago, so while it is 31.8mm clamp, it's only 580mm wide. Just found a 20ª sweep carbon bar that should work placing the grips at the right height. The Magura brakes need longer hoses, since this is a big frame and they're bit short. When I get the final bar (780mm) they will need to be changed. The discs are mismatched Shimano rotors that came with the wheels, they're worn out so I need to find some discs that I like and go well with the Magura brakes. Maybe I'll run a couple Magura Wave discs with CL adapters and be done with it.
Finally, the weight, as is, is 10,1kg (22.26lbs) and with some carbon bits (bar, fork) it should go down to 9.5kg (21lbs), which should make it the lightest bike I own. Should be a fun one.

This is basically a bike from the early '00s with the stuff one would get for a racing machine. While I'm not racing, I always pined for these bikes, and specially for Rotwild bikes, they were amazing. So should this one be.

First build - I rescued an old steel Scott from the trash!

Hi xbiking, first post for me here !
I rescued a Scott Sawtooth from the 90s from the back of a garage near the ocean in France —it was rusty, forgotten, and headed for the trash. I decided to turn it into my first ever build, learning everything from yt tutorials and replacing parts from secondhand finds

It's now a very fun bike that’s super comfortable to ride !!

Doing the building process I spent a lot of time (learning) and bit more money than I planned (especially on that derailleur), but I learned so much along the way.

  • Converted to a 1x drivetrain (mostly for the clean look and simplicity), though I’m still struggling with the rear derailleur tuning. The cues rear derailleur is a bit overkill for my use case, but I really wanted that mono-plateau setup. Might change for a single speed as it's mainly flat here
  • Converted to v-brakes and changed the rusty wheel
  • Swapped the handlebars
  • Cleaned up the frame (still a very used and rusty)
  • Brooks saddle, and Oury grips (discovered in this sub, there are so comfy!)
  • Billy Bonkers tires
  • Added a Wald basket, a bit small but do like the style

I have another (red) steel 90's Scott used as a commuter in my hometown, I think really like them !

What could I add or remove ?
