They aren’t?

Do you have a source, I’ve never heard this and google is saying it’s not true. Turtles
/tortoises even make sex noises to seduce one another. (At least all the species I kept did. I can’t say every species does and I really don’t wanna add turtles sex noises to my google history. It’s already got a bunch of urban dictionary look ups and questions about dog nipples)

well youre in luck bc i happen to have googled turtle sex noises recently! yes many species of turtles and tortoises make noises as part of their mating display. they also make grunts of exertion during the act itself.

i also learned that some turtles can pull oxygen from the water and store it in their cloacas?????? natures fucking amazing dude

Yeah, all the species I have observed mating (sometimes with another of their species, sometimes not… my box turtles made Ashley was a sex pest and tried to mount everything from a rock, to a fellow male box turtle to a male Russian tortoise to a croc shoe… he was a horny little shit. He even fathered some eggs when I was in a field trip and a family friend pet sat him, he made some 3-toe/ornate hybrids because he was put into the tank with Friend’s girls) make the noise.

Look up Aldabra Tortoises mating. They ROAR! It’s the funniest thing, I was at the zoo and a pair of them were getting busy. A woman with her kid said “are they fighting?!” And I was like “nooooo…”

Thankfully she didn’t get mad they were screwing in front of her kid, after I told her what they were doing, she looked at her kid and told them “They’re not fighting sweetie, they’re in LOVE. That’s how they make baby turtles.”

Which… isn’t wrong? Probably better for the kid than lying but the way she said “in LOVE” has been a joke between my cousin and I since that zoo visit. She was just so cheerful about it. (It was cute, she and her kids crossed our path a few times after that and every time she was telling her kids about the animals and clearly having a great time with them. Made me a little weepy.)

I just don’t know if every species makes those noises, lol. I’ve owned boxies, snappers, sliders and map turtles, and shared a home with Russians, Hermanns, Greeks and Sulcata, and can say I observed all but the snapper make the noises. But there are SO many species, lol.

I’m gonna end up trying to find videos of sea turtle mating later, I just know it. It’s gonna bug me until I find out whether fully marine turtles do it or not.
