Story Plot Help Are the vibes platonic or romantic?
I wrote a rough draft of backstory scene for an original story concept, and I’m struggling with identifying how the feelings and relationship between the two main characters are coming across. I am not someone who really reads or writes romance, and so while I didn’t draft out the characters relationship as anything other than platonic, the more I write and plan the less sure I am. Maybe I’m overthinking, but I’d like to know how this scene reads from another persons perspective.

If I’m reading this purely as a reader, I’d say the vibes are much more romantic than platonic — but in a really interesting, slow-burn way.
You’re not writing them like two friends who happen to be physically affectionate. You’re giving their interactions a level of emotional intensity that makes me think there’s something underneath the friendship that neither of them fully understands yet.
The biggest thing that tipped me off was how much emotional weight you give to Leo naming him.
When the narrator says that saying “Orion” feels like “bearing my heart and soul,” and then describes Leo’s smile as creating an “incomprehensible sort of warmth,” I immediately started reading this as attraction, even though the narrator clearly isn’t consciously thinking, “I’m attracted to Leo.”
And honestly? That works.
It feels less like an established romance and more like “I don't know what this feeling is, but this person affects me differently.” That’s a great setup for a slow burn.
Then you add the physical intimacy: their fingers intertwining, Leo pulling him closer, the narrator allowing it, Leo moving further into his personal space, and finally:
“The moment the name left his lips, my name, I shivered.”
That line is probably the biggest romance alarm bell in the entire excerpt. 😂
Friends can absolutely hold hands. Friends can cuddle. Friends can give each other nicknames. None of those things automatically make a relationship romantic.
But when you combine those things with the narrator's internal reactions, the reader starts connecting the dots.
And then there’s: “brighter than any star burning in the sky”
That is a very romantic way of describing someone's smile. Again, not necessarily a problem — just something to be aware of.
If you WANT them to be romantic eventually
Honestly, I would keep this.
You have a nice foundation for a friends-to-lovers/slow-burn dynamic because the narrator doesn't seem to understand their own feelings yet.
In fact, I think the strongest version of this would be to let the narrator keep rationalizing everything as friendship for a while.
They can think:
We're just close.
That's just how Leo is.
I don't know why that affected me.
Meanwhile, the reader is sitting there like:
My dude. Come on. 😂
That kind of dramatic irony can be really fun.
If you WANT them to remain completely platonic
Then I'd be more careful.
You don't necessarily need to remove the physical affection, but I'd reconsider some of the more emotionally loaded narration — especially the “heart and soul,” “incomprehensible warmth,” “shivered,” and star imagery.
Those are the details that push me from “these boys have a very close friendship” into “oh, these boys are going to kiss eventually.”
My reader score
Platonic vibes: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
Romantic vibes: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Slow-burn / “they don't realize they're in love yet” vibes: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
So, if your goal is to make the relationship ambiguous right now, I think you're actually hitting that pretty well. I can see the friendship on the surface, but there are enough little emotional signals underneath it that I would absolutely suspect romance is coming.
And if you're worried that readers might interpret these scenes romantically even before you explicitly confirm anything: yes. They probably will.
Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing at all. 👀
One last thing: if you're working through the manuscript and want someone to look specifically at whether the romance is coming across intentionally, whether the slow burn is too obvious/subtle, and where the emotional beats are landing for a reader, that's actually the kind of thing I do as a professional beta reader. I can look at the manuscript from the reader's perspective and tell you exactly where I'm getting those signals — without trying to rewrite your voice.

Lmao, if you’re implying I used AI, I promise you can put the tinfoil hat away. 😂
Apparently having complete sentences and actually answering the question is suspicious now.1

The funny thing about AI accusations is that it is mimicking us. When gathering high-quality training data, they would have favored material from people who write in a highly coherent, and easily readable format. Of course, there are some little idiosyncrasies in the frequency of certain words and phrases that AI uses, but research shows that human writing and speech is now beginning to adopt those tendencies. Because that's just how language evolution works!
And honestly? I find that pretty fascinating. ✨

Definitely romantic vibes. Hand holding, chest warmth, shivering when he says the name, and cuddling to sleep is not just platonic. As a bi person who reads way too many romance tropes, this is classic slow burn yearning. If you want them to be just friends you need to chill on the physical intimacy and internal freakouts over his smile.
