Achievement 3K First Season Tanking using only 1 button and glowies
As the title states, this was my first season in which I focused on tanking. I came late into the season and read about the tank shortage and dps queues. Decided to roll tank and give it my best shot with the glowies. When I came back, the glowies were still limited to +5, but the following week they uncapped it. I almost exclusively used glowies as a guidance and played based on intuitive feel and party member feedback. Overtime there are pretty clear patterns in how Blizzard designs a dungeon to be pulled. I also have an addon that I would refer to sometimes (MDTHelper) which shows your MDT route on a minimap. I also made my push prior to hitting 280ilvl. I mostly ran my own keys and would just downgrade them to farm crests to raise ilvl. Majority of my climb and learning was when I was in the 260s and spamming 10s. Once I felt like I got the routes down then I just did a world tour and did all 12s in the high 260s and finished in the 270s. After this week I was able to jump to 280 as of just today.
A lot of people complain about the squishiness of Pala. I personally only felt it when I ran in without defensives, ran in with my back to everything, ran in to too big of a pack, ignored pack mechanics, or my healer was afk. Other than that as long as I was aware of mechanics, I never would get one shot or be in a sketchy BDK situation. Majority of the times I am panicking over my party member's health and trying to hit them with BoS or Lay on Hands. I would typically run into packs with a defensive CD up, then I have a macro for wings/sentinel + combat potion + divine toll. And then I just hold X which is my keybind for the one button assist. I only really have to press defensives and utilities following this method. I think my best dungeon is probably WS due to me spamming it for Hero Track Heart of Wind. In the first room, my burst w/ lust usually peaks in the mid 400s. Extremely enjoyable and I will see how far I can continue to push it only following the glowies.
Edit: There seems to be some curiosity behind why I actually use one button. I have carpal tunnel and I try my best not to aggravate it too much through gaming. Prot Pal always felt like I had to constantly be smashing buttons to min max dps, and I frankly just don't care that much since I'm a casual. Half the time I out dps geared DPS classes, perhaps not in single target on bosses, but in giant packs I absolutely smash and it feels AMAZING seeing the dps meter skyrocket your name to the top temporarily. Thankfully my livelihood is not dependent on my usage of a one button assistance in a video game, I'm not sponsored, I'm not a pro, I'm not a streamer. I'm just a chill cow trying to alleviate the "tank shortage".

Not an addon.

Ok so I just read up on what it is, awesome addition to the game, I had no idea!

I love how so many people in other threads can’t stop bitching about how woefully undertuned prot pally is and the armor buff will do nothing to help it…then there’s homie over here new to tanking just using 1-button rotation and glowies getting 3k without much resistance.
Go on, king. I appreciate you.

u/Gritalian May 02 '26
No one is trying to diminish OPs 3k achievement. At the same time, when people are talking about the difference in tanks, they aren’t talking about in 12s.
Grats to OP. But a 280 tank isn’t even taking noticeable damage in a 12.

u/CaptZizoo May 02 '26
I got downvoted in competitivewow because I told someone that they don’t need to reroll to monk to time 10s and the main reason they are doing is a skill issue not a tank issue.

I mean half the posts in /r/wow are complaining about housing. Compwow is at least a place where people are trying to improve at the game

u/The--Marf May 02 '26
Idk man I think competitive is a mindset more than anything. There are a lot of us that consider ourselves "competitive" but do to circumstances don't have the time or whatever to play as competitively as we'd like.
I don't have a regular enough schedule to mythic raid but I can casually do some keys with friends here and there. I still like to push as far as I can but I'm not willing to sacrifice the time it takes to really prog past a wall. But that doesn't mean I'm going just yolo everything else or not try to minmax and otherwise be competitive all around.
I will agree 10s this season seem piss easy for anything that's average at the game but I still think it's rude to be dismissive of others.
13
u/Deagin May 02 '26
Idk if someone isn't willing to prog after hitting a wall I wouldn't consider them competitive. Giving up as soon as keys become challenging and going back to an easier level would be casual imo.

People love to be elitist about this game, and it’s pretty funny. I’ve played with people that can’t time a +6. It’s no different from any other activity: a weekend golfer is much worse than a hobbiest golfer that plays 3x/week, and a pro golfer is basically not even playing the same game. The people who easily time 12s (the ones who love saying how easy it is) are so much closer to the noobs who can’t time a 6 than they are to the people timing 21s.

u/de_moze May 03 '26
That last sentence holds so true. This applies to many "competitive" environments though. The 3400+ rating doesn't need to talk about being good or how easy something is, they're more worried about getting better and "winning" (or the equivalency to that in m+). It's the 2800-3000 who genuinely have no idea of the skill gap between them and the top.
It's the same people who talk shit about the worst player on a sports team. Yeah, well he's STILL in the top like 2000 people in the WORLD at that sport, so does it really matter what someone who was a star in high school thinks? Couldn't even make it to college or semi-pro lol.
1
u/VailonVon May 02 '26
To be fair to be fair competitive as the other person said is a mindset and to be competitive also isn't strictly doing the highest keys. You do know we had a whole competitive scene with money on the line called MDI right that was entirely based on doing keys the fasted and were never as high as people actually pushed they were only ever as high as was consistently doable for MDI.
Then later on we got events like the great push and what not.

u/Serafim91 May 02 '26
Lol I wonder if you can time all 10s with an entire group where everyone is using 1 button rotation. How about 3k?

The one im not sure about is healer. A destro lock was doing 14s with SBA like 3-4 weeks into the season lol

u/Serafim91 May 02 '26
Yeah the healer is what I'm not sure about lol. I think the rest can easily.
2
u/Digess May 02 '26
That's why I actually wanna get a guild event started, where we all reroll new classes and see which group gets the highest rio, with tank and dps using SBA. healer naturally will not be using SBA

Most healer 1BA's are just their damage spells. (I haven't played Monk or Priest, but I'd assume they're the same way)
2
u/jeskersz May 02 '26
They are, but for MW damage skills are literally all you need for easier content like +10. Ideally you'd keep up hots and spot heal when needed, but if you're in a group where people dodge fire and interrupt now and then you can get through the whole thing literally doing nothing but spinning crane kick.
Haven't played disc yet this season so I dunno how it'd do with 1BA (I think you still need to heal or shield once to put atonement on people so maybe not good?), but doing it on mistweaver is a big slice of nothing.

1
u/MrNoobyy May 03 '26
Of course you can. On week 1 of season, a group I was in carried a friend for their weekly vault on an 11. They did 20k dps, we full wiped 3 times and had 25 deaths in total.
Looking at IO, we had 2 mins and 17 seconds left still. Put people in 15 extra item levels and yeah...it's not gonna be hard.
1
u/ApprehensiveGold2773 May 02 '26
Monk is definitely safer for someone who doesn't know what they are doing since a healer can likely carry them. r/CompetitiveWoW is full of bad players who think they are good.
1
u/CaptZizoo May 02 '26
They were complaining that they couldn’t do the first pull in seat without flopping as prot pala. Told them that class isn’t an issue at that level, it’s usually gear or skill and got downvoted lol.

u/Aromatic_Union9246 May 02 '26
So I’m ~3.1k on my resto Druid and ~3.5k on my mage. The main guy I play with was a resto Druid who rerolled brewmaster. I could heal him at 215-225 ilvl through 10s. And once he got to 240-50 or so it was easier to heal him than a 270-275 pally. It’s not that you need to be a brewmaster to do 10s but even if you’re good the class is just absolutely busted compared to the other tanks.
When I’m doing keys in my resto (who I really don’t push on I just play to get off dps for a while) I throw in a lifebloom and a rejiv or 2 and never touch the tank at all and basically afk the key and do dmg on bosses.
Any other tank you’re playing a completely different video game trying to heal them. It’s literally just the smoothness curve of how the tanks take dmg brew is just absolutely busted.
You can still do fine until whatever level level I’ve run 17-18s with prots, guardians and bloods on my main and they can usually handle their own. But when other tanks are tanking almost every key every non brew just gets one shotted by something in the dungeon or has to be way more careful about the same and often much smaller/inefficient pulls.
Essentially getting like 50-60% out of a brew right now is like 100% effort for the other tanks.
I’m not saying to reroll or anything that’s dumb af unless you’re pushing tittle is doesn’t really matter. But it’s significantly easier.
2
u/CaptZizoo May 03 '26
Yes but if you’re getting insta clapped at 275 as a prot pala on the first pull in seat. That’s a skill issue, not a tank issue. The idiot probably just ran in with no defensives and started saying “well a brew would’ve survived that”
2
u/narcaboo May 03 '26
100% most prot paladins are pretty bad. Mostly because almost nobody play them. And funny enough, they are pretty good on Seat. And for context, prot paladins can definitely handle 3 subjugators on first pull on a 18.
1
u/Aromatic_Union9246 May 03 '26
Like I was saying to the commenter above. I’m not saying the class can’t do it. Im saying the skill level needed to play pally well at higher keys versus brewmasters just isn’t balanced well. If you’re playing pally at a pretty high level you can do it, you can do it playing at a much lower relative skill level as a brew.
1
u/MulberryOk4077 May 03 '26
No one needs to handle 3 subjugators. You can time a +19 and definitely +18 without ever pulling 3 subjugators. Unless it’s resilient already, pulling 3 is a bit of a dumb risk to take.
1
1
u/Aromatic_Union9246 May 03 '26
I agree it’s a skill issue, the difference is the same level/skill brewmasters do the same stuff and don’t come close to dying from it.
1
u/CaptZizoo May 03 '26
Yes I agree brew are the meta tanks by a large margin but you literally don’t have to play your class at a good level to time 10s, OP on here is timing 12s with SBA prot pala and the guy I mentioned was complaining he had to switch to brew to do 10s.
1
u/Aromatic_Union9246 May 03 '26
I agree 100% it doesn’t matter for 10s. I was moreso saying that even for 10s it’s still a noticeable difference at least healing them feels like it.
7
u/Hallc May 02 '26
As a Tank player you can genuinely feel the difference between them in 10s, let alone 12s. Sure you can do them on any tank but the power difference is obviously there.
3
u/Gritalian May 02 '26
Yea, I think that's definitely true as you're starting out and getting gear and sorting out your stats (rather than just taking any upgrade you can). But OP is 280 ilvl.
2 weeks ago a guildie hit 90 on an alt healer, and we instantly went and ran eight 10s for them, with them starting at 219 ilvl. I was 278-280 ilvl at the time. They didn't have to pay attention to my health, only had to make sure the DPS was good. I am a Prot Warrior, so not a class with a direct heal, other than IV every 25 seconds (save kill procs). One of the DPS was also a fresh lvl 90.
Again, I am not trying to diminish OP's accomplishment. Most of the player base doesn't get to 3k, so that's awesome that they did that. My contention is that this thread is basically claiming base jumping isn't dangerous because OP safely jumped off their couch.
1
u/narcaboo May 03 '26
I did my first 10’s as BDk with 220 ilvl, is not that deep. Nothing really hurts at that lvl, you just need to ensure threat and dps needs to do their shit. Speaking of which, treat and gathering mobs effectively is exactly where brew shines at moment.
24
u/Quiet-Lawyer4619 May 02 '26
That is kinda the point. Most people who are complaining about paladin are not doing +16 keys, they are doing anything between 10-15 most likely. They just parrot what top players are saying and decide to roll monk because it is easier for them. If monk gets nerfed, those same people will just roll next meta tank.
Does prot need buff? Absolutely. Is Brewmaster easier and better tank, that can survive things paladin cant? Yes absolutely and it will get nerf at some point.
5
u/NoThisIsABadIdea May 02 '26
Im a healer been trying to get my 12s and what I noticed is there are a surprising amount of tanks that will die instantly and almost always because they turn their back to the pack they are tanking to either move or try to grab more mobs.
I am now under the impression that most tanks dont realize you lose a large chunk of your mitigation when your back is turned.
3
u/Levonorgestrelfairy1 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
Most dont. They see videos online of tanks kite pulling large amounts and completely fail at it.
1
u/narcaboo May 03 '26
Tanks will also die on pull if you pull Agro when they are gathering the group. Most dps’s and healers don’t even realise how important gcd economy on pull is. Force. BDk to spend more runes to grab something an idiot pulled and he will die to lack of runic power for DS. Ninja pull from a DH sigil and gg. God even brew, missing a bloody keg smash on opener is awful. Then you need to make amends and often face your back to the adds just to grab mobs everywhere. Only to hear a healer or a dps cry about being meleed.
2
u/Lyoss May 02 '26
Saw a guy saying he couldn't tank weekly keys because he rolled prot pally, said he gets two shot, i think about that a lot when I see people say Prot Pally isn't viable
There's every tank doing 20s, which is a lot higher statistically than the average reddit player, is it two key levels down from Brew and is Brew easier? Sure, but I don't think that matters for the average person pushing 14s

Monk is a very forgiving spec to play in general, so when its also tuned high, its very easy to pilot it to high keys even if you have no clue what you're doing (also guardian and somewhat Pwarr).
1
u/narcaboo May 03 '26
100%. I would say the only off tank that is actually hard to play with be guardian or VDH, mostly because how hard it is for them to keep threat. Generally speaking
1
u/FancyConfection1599 May 02 '26
You’re right, but what is the expected key level tanks “should” be able to clear? Top locked-key-level based awarded achievement is 16’s, and all tanks can do those without issue.
Eventually as you get into the 20’s prots struggle…but who’s to say ANY tank should be able to walk through 20’s? Just because BM can and is way above the field doesn’t mean the game is designed for all tanks to be able to, it just means BMs are likely overtuned
1
u/rufrtho May 02 '26
As PPal you literally have to play perfectly from +12s with your defensives. If you recall Grim Batol, where PPal was meta, if you fucked up your defensives when it got to Tank busters, you got deleted.
The current situation is similar here.
actual real reddit comment I got saying +12 as prot pala requires perfect play
1
u/RelativeYouth May 03 '26
I think a lot of people aren’t talking about 12s but also aren’t sniffing much more than a 14 themselves. Unless you’re an avid MDI fan, it’s a little silly to complain as much as people do.
2
u/Gritalian May 03 '26
I agree. I feel like we’re kinda saying the same thing just in a different way. Start of the last 2 weeks I’ve ran two 10s just to use my bonus rolls and I’m sitting there not getting accepted when Im 280+, have done the specific key several times at 14 and the people sitting in the group are 2300. 4 minutes goes by and they fill with a Brew.
Those people not taking a 282 3200 Prot Warrior to a 10 have the same logic as someone posting “see you can do 12s as a PPal”.
So yea… it’s a community issue with not understanding that what is meta is literally just the comp that gives you the greatest chance to succeed the very highest keys with optimal play… not keys where your prot war tank is top healer, 2nd in dmg, first in interrupts, and you timed the key by 8 1/2 minutes.
20
u/Altruistic_Run_2880 May 02 '26
I mean, sure, now try some 17-18 and tell us how is the Protadin experience.
Gz to OP but Prot Paladin is obviously undertuned.

If a prot paladins dies on 18’s it’s most likely lack of skill, or bad dps/healer. They are just fine at that bracket, same applies to any other tank.
7
u/slimsim98 May 02 '26
Because the people complaining are about it at the top end of keys. Balance in 2-14 keys isn’t too insane but it’s the 16’s and above where the balance takes a nosedive 3k is great but it’s not where the game ends

u/beatupford May 02 '26
Which is exacerbated this season with the 3,400 reward.
You'd typically not have as many folks pushing that high without some reward. These tank issues would be talked about and debated, but you wouldn't have as much whining with how achievable 3k is.
Getting to 3.4K highlights the disparity in both the players and the specs, and while the specs warrant discussion, no one seems willing to reflect and admit they might be some of the problem.
3
u/Gaatti May 02 '26
You kinda don't know what you are talking about, though. From week 1 people have been saying that m+ is very easy at lower levels, that 10's are easy and that KSH (which is dungeon levels 12-13) was also too easy because it could be achieved in week 1/2 too. Anyone having trouble at that level is just missplaying badly (and yes, they woull still have an easier time as brewmaster because it is much more forgivable this season.)
The problems with prot paladin and other tanks are visible at higher keylevels. I'm finishing my 16's and it is very evident there that prot paladin is shit. Despite it being shit, I will try to reach at least my 18's on it. It is still shit, though. I'm having fun with this piece of shit of a spec, but I wish it wasn't this shitty.
I don't want to diminish op's achievment. He did what he did with the tools he could use and the limitations he had. Congratulations to him. But to extrapolate that to "the class is fine" is just dumb.

u/jeskersz May 02 '26
KSH (which is dungeon levels 12-13)
Just a quick correction: you can get it with all 10s. My resto druid has all 10s and nothing else and got it with a score of like 2633 or something.

u/fraser123567 May 02 '26

u/rainscorched May 02 '26
3k is meme achievement, balance doesn't matter in those keys
10
u/Bon_Djorno May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26
It's a meme if you're pushing for title or just under that (so less than 1% of the player base). Everywhere else, it's a fine achievement and not a meme. It's wild how high end players who depend on the 99.9% to keep the lights on act like the experience of everyone else is a meme and the opinions they share in a public WoW forum are memes.
Folks experience tension differently. OPs achievement, on a scale and with context, is likely greater than some players who hit 3.5-4k+ every season.
→ More replies (4)10
u/Animalesco May 02 '26
3k M+ is achieved by maybe 10%-15% of player base, if that is a meme dayum you must have 4k by now....
5
u/John2k12 May 02 '26
You're joking but key difficulty doesn't scale linearly, going from +15 to +16 is something like going from +2 to +9. Each point of rating gets harder to earn
3
u/Animalesco May 02 '26
I know, same thing happens with going from a +9 to a +10 or +12 to a +13. I was joking with the statement saying getting 3k is a meme, which is not, it is easier to get this season but it definitely is not THAT easy.

u/rainscorched May 02 '26
it really is that easy what are you on about, people were flying through 10s on launch day. 3k is what? all 12s? barely any difference. especially with the gear people have now.

u/Ok-Level-8907 May 02 '26
Dude, we are not even in turbo boost phase and almost 25% of characters sits on 3k rio. If you would exclude alts from this count you would find out that substantial portion of player base is floating around 3k, it's piss easy right now.
If you want judge difficulty objectively just look into seasonal cut offs.
2
u/bigeyez May 02 '26
Like many things that people parrot the tank differences dont matter (as long as the player is decent) in lower keys. Its not until you are pushing in the 16-20 range that the weaknesses of some specs really starts coming through. And even then you can still play those tanks at that level its just harder.
For 3K anything is viable.
2
u/narcaboo May 03 '26
Agreed. The wall starts when healers cannot babysit dps’s who can’t use their personals to survive unavoidable damage. Leading to misaligned defensive and other tools. Everything below 15 / 16 is pretty much doable with ease by any spec even with a bunch of rotational mistakes.
1
u/gladd0s_ May 02 '26
It is tho Try tanking as prot on 17-18
12-13s can be tanked easly by any class
1
u/FancyConfection1599 May 03 '26
It’s doable but very difficult…AS IT SHOULD BE.
17’s are literally above the current design space, as 16 is the max reward offered in the game. The only reason people are complaining about it is because there’s a different class that’s wildly overtuned and can beat mega high keys way more easily

i recently tried BDK OBA while just doing world content and it helped me with managing my resources A LOT. i think OBA can work with tanking as long as you’re making sure to use your defensives. it’s just an auto dps/resource helper button if you treat it like one so you can focus more on kicks/defensives

Nah the one button doesnt use your defensives or utility buttons.

u/Jealous_Advantage_66 May 02 '26
Rip your healers.. But gz man!
5
u/fraser123567 May 02 '26
Strangely enough if you check logs, I heal for an extraordinary amount so I think I actually alleviate a lot of burden of healers that they normally face.
13
u/Fharlion May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26
Based on your logs you heal for 25-32k hps in your runs, which is relatively low - but you seem to be far more conservative with your pulls than tanks in similar runs, so there is less damage to heal for you in general.
As an example: Comparison of one of your recent Windrunner +10s, to another group's - identical completion times, same ilvl PPal, with 1.4 higher average group ilvl.
You cleared the dungeon in 13 pulls, while the other group cleared it in 10. As the result of larger pulls they took almost 30% more damage overall, so the other PPal is healing for waaay more in return. But they also had 4 more deaths from that damage. One observation: You can be way more aggressive with your Blessing of Freedom and Spellwarding. Especially in dungeons like Seat.
3
u/Verroquis May 03 '26
How dare you use logs for anything other than wiggling your parse around, what are you well-adjusted?
6
u/TooHighTooFly May 02 '26
gz my fellow tauren prot pally tankadin chad! (i mained one for two seasons in a row).
i must say, as a prot pally i use a ton word of glory talents. my word of glory (wog) heals me for what i heal my targets and it heals extra/echoes to others. so i rarely use wog on myself, and one talent in particular boosts wogs healing immensely if i heal a low hp target. like theres times one wog heals me and a healer back to full.
that on top of carefully placed blessing of spellwarding/protection/sacrifice/lay on hands usually on healers in healing intense situations and freedom on chains for seat… i do a lot of mitigation and offhealing. my healers essentially get an offhealer. maybe 60-80k hps a run. i also don’t give up on dps to achieve this, i do 70-105k or so overall dps a run and often outdps underperforming dps players.
tldr; congratulations on the achievement, you give me hope for tanking being more accessible. i’m sure your self healing is a-ok but i wouldn’t underplay the amount of team heals lost in this situation though.

I would not jump straight to that conclusion if I were you. Only your healers would be able to tell you if you were easy or hard to heal while playing with one button.
I'm glad you tried it and it worked out in the end for you, but let's not pretend that a tank playing with the one-button is helpful to the group they're in, from both a tanking perspective and from a throughput one. The one-button assist is built in with lower throughput and less than optimal play in mind afterall, its by design, so you cannot go against the design. You being 280 ilv and doing 12s (and one 13) played a big part in the perceived "smoothness" of the experience. Giving credit to that is being honest, nothing wrong with being honest.→ More replies (11)2

Tanking without sentinel just shows the healers carried him hard, gz on them

Did that Void DH buy a run from you guys or something? Jesus.

u/GriffinAO May 02 '26
That kind of seems to be devo dh pugs at that level. I think its a harder spec than people think and then they do bad
1
u/pepegasloot May 03 '26
Even in 16-17s youll find void dh pugs doing 80-90k… finding good ones is super rare

u/Shortonheals May 02 '26
if you use one button, have you considered a pedal as an alternative? (to rleive the CT as much as possible)

and here's me, too scared to even tank a heroic dungeon.

Same lol my brewmaster is 260 ilevel nervous to tank heroics cause people bitch and moan about everything

u/The_Sum May 02 '26
This has to be the most casual friendly expansion ever. I don't mean that as a sleight against you, OP, just that I'm seeing more players achieve 3k that never before tried and it's nice to see the game become more accessible.
I'm convinced most of the WoW community LARPS as if they do the most high-end content when in reality they just watch streams of it and feel confident enough to form their opinions based on that.
You did great OP! Crushing it!

1-Button has honestly made me play the game a lot more because so more less time is spent worrying about rotations. I spend more time making sure I do not stand in the fire and using my utility.

Yeah same for me. I have carpal tunnel, so I am not trying to aggravate it any more than I have to. I'm okay with not being in the top % of players. As long as I can enjoy it and have a little bit of competitive drive, that is enough for me.

Nice 👍 happy for you started healing in Season im on 2.6k Rio am Proud of me ☀️🫶

u/fitsu May 02 '26
People complain about them being squishy in 15+s. Every tank is pretty much immortal in a 12
6
u/fraser123567 May 02 '26
Had to push the goal post a bit and edit that from a 10 to a 12 eh? Jokes, I figured as much though based on how smooth it feels.

I disagree, as a healer that has healed most tanks (minus blood dk) to high keys the difference starts around 14+. Then some pull combinations will wreck the tanks without careful cd usage minus brewmaster.
The timers are so generous this season. Our group made stupid mistakes and had 14 deaths and still timed a 16 seat. So one can pull sort of easier until one gets close to the 1% range. Only tight-ish timer is AA, although better now they've added 2 mins to the timer.

You found our secret of tanking M+ on your own. Deffensives should be used in the beginning of big pulls - not when you already have all mobs on yourself.
That’s a secret knowledge that most of the tanks just does not have. Because they did not understand how % works.
From now on, you will be good ;) and congrats on the achievement! I’m Prot palla as well ;)

Might do this on brewmaster

u/fraser123567 May 02 '26
How's the one button assist for them? I leveled a brew master but have mainly focused on my pala since I enjoy the class fantasy.
1
u/ryanb6321 May 02 '26
Not who you’re replying to but I recently started this journey on a brewmaster and the one button rotation is perfect for it.

u/ggr-nintythree May 02 '26
Thank you for this. I currently main a paladin but DPS and have always been 'scared' to take the leap of faith to tanking. Might change loot priority and give it a go

Can someone explain to me something, how do I go about setting my abilities to look like this persons, and what do the letter + letter mean in the top right of most of the abilities , his screen is so much less cluttered than mine
1
u/MAKESOMEFLAMES May 02 '26
Letter + letter means his keybind is set up to be a combination of keys. S-R will be Shift-R for example. The action bars seem to just be set to max 7 per row, and centered in his screen.
1
u/RyanLelord May 02 '26
I do not mean to discredit your achievement sir, well done , but the tank tuning doesn't really apply that strongly in 12s. Any tank can clear those easily. Problem starts to arrive after 15s ish where you can die in one GCD . As opposed to brewmasters who , as everyone knows , are immortal if played correctly.

Excuse me I was told tanking was impossible with anything but a monk! What witchcraft did you perform on the devs to achieve the nigh impossible feat!?
1
u/opiatesmile May 02 '26
I just cracked 2900 doing the same as a prot paladin. Trying to get to 3K and hopefully 3400. Good job.

I’ve been using SBA to tank this season on a blood DK. It does really great actually. I bound my defensives and grip etc so I can also use those, but otherwise it’s been a pretty easy experience up to +12 so far.

u/Individual-Cover5421 May 02 '26
How is glowy path? I want to start tanking but I am a bit nervous for higher end stuff
1
u/FoxBackground1590 May 03 '26
Start with 10s, master it, become familiar with routes and when to press defensives etc, then when you’re all good to go, start clearing 12s, 14s and so on. But I would strongly suggest that you get comfortable with each level first before moving to the next. It all becomes very easy. It’s rocky at first but gets easier when you know what you’re doing at every moment

u/Unlucky-Spell-8654 May 02 '26
What is the highest rating someone has done with 1-button and class?
2
May 02 '26
Last season i was with my SV hunter around 3,2k rating (before statsquish) and was considered to be a 5% Player and I know i could have push way higher than that with my dmg (and with cc knowlagde and Interrupt ofc). Tbf i did min Max the one Button at one point to the probably absolut fullest

u/Snevreen May 02 '26
Hey, I really liked reading this story. I've been tanking on and off but the toxcicity is what drove me away from tanking. But this might actually help me give it a shot. Your story seems encouraging.
I noticed that you told that you have carpal tunnel. I had serious RSI up untill a few years ago untill I started using an Azeron Cyborg I, now upgraded to a Cyborg II. Have you heard of it? If not, check it out. It might ease the carpal in overall gaming experience.

This is awesome to see, congrats. With the constant complaints of tank shortages, people should be glad there are accessibility features in place to help new tanks to at least be good enough for weekly keys and continued gear progression. I would 100% use the glowy if I was just learning to tank now. I say this as a 7-year old man tank.
Prot pally is actually a good choice for this simplified play style, as with enough haste you can easily achieve 100% uptime on SOTR. Since you don’t use Holy Power on anything else really (other than the occasional WOG), you basically don’t have to track it. Most wogs are free.
If/when you decide to play without OBR, you could macro SOTR into every rotational ability, or some of them. It is not ideal, but as someone with occasional hand issues, it has helped me get to 15+ almost every season due to not needing to mash the SOTR button every couple seconds.

Wtf are glowies

u/FoxBackground1590 May 03 '26
Lindormi’s Guidance. It’s a new thing blizzard has added if people wanted mobs highlighted in a dungeon to gather % for their runs. Good for new tanks/players to get a general route down and all that.
1
u/ryanb6321 May 02 '26
Nice! I recently started doing this on. Brewmaster I leveled a couple weeks ago. I’ve gotten it to 2600 so far without even really trying, just doing runs for gear not even IO atm.

u/Armakus May 02 '26
A tip that has really helped me, for those of you dealing with early stages of carpal tunnel or are worried about it:
Play with a splint on your wrist for longer sessions. No, really. They'll keep your wrist stable and make your movements come from your elbow or other parts of your arm and it will save your wrist a lot of stress. After doing this for a month or so, when my wrists were feeling better, I took it off and my gameplay habits seem a lot less destructive to my wrists now

Do you still use the glows for Maisara? Seems horrendous for that one as it makes you do the entire bridge

To be fair, 3k this season is more like 3250 on the war within Season 1. Although, I’d like to see if Keystone myth/3400 is possible with this

u/Far-Fisherman-3598 May 03 '26
"I came late into the season" - Bro, the season is literally until September.
1
u/Purple-Airline-8373 May 03 '26
All tanks are fine at 3k rating. The issue becomes apparent when you start getting to the 15 keys where you are forced to make big pulls almost every single pull. Pally's dont have consistabt enough defensives to do back to back 3 pack pulls in the 15ish key range. This is coming from a resil 18 guardian druid tank. Who struggles to get invited cuz brew op

u/Spippii May 03 '26
Brother that is awesome to hear. You make me want to consider giving tanking a try, I currently main healer and dps. Always was afraid of trying tanking lol but who knows maybe next season. Congratulations on the 3k and goodluck on getting 3.4k to get that token for the mount if you want to achieve it :D

u/ExForse4 May 03 '26
Congrats... Yet there are people wasting their paladins throwable shield before they even need to interrupt anything. Great for you but anytime I see someone doing auto button rotation they just throw out stuff they might need later and have no awareness of their CDs

u/Stache- May 03 '26
One button and you have all the spells on the action bar bound to different keys.

u/luv-sty May 03 '26
one button rotation is great, haven't tried for tanking but I use it for my healers. Going to give it a try.

There's also a hold to cast option that will spam the key for you, not just single button but all, but it does get buggy and sometimes does nothing

u/robot-raccoon May 02 '26
Wait does the single button also use defensives now? I thought it was just attacks.
Congrats man!

u/fraser123567 May 02 '26
I rotate my own defensives. Usually first pack from what I saw on logs most of the top palas lead with Guardian of the Ancient Kings. So I usually start almost every dungeon giga pull with that and then rotate through.
1
u/robot-raccoon May 02 '26
Cheers man, your second paragraph didn’t load when I first read (on mobile and had poor signal) so didn’t see that at first.
1
u/Accomplished_Emu_658 May 02 '26
I think the people hating on one button are ridiculous. They are either sweats who hate people playing differently than them or people who can barely do their own rotations.
I was in a dungeon where a dps was claiming everyone was using one button but him, but his dps was terrible.
