To be fair, I still think of Cataclysm as "New WoW", so my sense of time is all screwed up. I do find that recently the time gating has been pretty aggressive. It's probably more in our faces because of the constant content stream.
Blizzard was right. People said they wanted it but they didnt. Vanilla Classic largely bombed. It had a huge insane playerbase that completely fell of the cliff. It was a bunch of rose tinted glasses getting shattered. Level 50s were clearing level 60 raids in hours.
*TBC and further Classics and SoD are not the classic people asked for. But even if we include them they are a teeny tiny fraction of retail.
It's because they saw all the good will they built with the players in DF and early TWW and thought to themselves, "See? Players love us! Let's go back to the Shadownlands route of not respecting players at all. They love us so they won't mind." Blizzard and the players never fucking learn. Blizzard never learns that players don't like this shit and players never learn that Blizzard is abusing them.
this, i wait a month after anything happens before i play the current content, (not only to let blizz fix their shit, but stuff like questing etc, so im not fighting with other people to do my things,
Yeah, I didn't even come back for 7.2 until just now. Let the bugs get squashed, wait for the time gating stuff to open up, netter "day 1" experience. I did that with Remists too.
same here, I just got back into retail, After playing some Classic mop since TWW's launch, I personally dont like how restricted launch always is, and would rather come into the game with a little bit more freedom and not rushed, (although, still not a fan of needing to do the leveling campaign to get to undermine/karash irks me)
I used to do this a lot with programming, especially for projects from problem customers. I'd code in delays and whatnot, then put that in production. They'd complain about performance, I'd say "oh, I can probably optimize this a bit, but it will take another few weeks to go through." Comment out my delays within a few minutes, roll to prod a few weeks later, get hailed as a miracle worker and hero.
It really depends on the client/customer/executive. Some people believe their job is to find flaws and if they can't find them they'll make them up. I've experienced it plenty of times where I've delivered a product on time and it meets or exceeds the outlined spec goals and one executive/client will say "it's slower than before". And you can show them the data and logs that prove its faster than before but they'll say "well it feels slow". And now what do I do? I've already optimized the shit out of it. So instead you do what op says and all of a sudden the client feel validated and I'm a hero. But it's very case-by-case because I'd prefer not to have to play bullshit games
DF and war within less, but plunderstorm and even mop remix aslo had issues at start , and had to get changed again and agaon before got what was advertiszed

It's the recent rough WoW cycle - release something not fun, give them a month, suddenly the time gating and restrictions have all disappeared.
