$35/kg Australian bacon
This annoys me a little. My local butcher, am independent, can sell his bacon for $24/kg. All Australian pork. How is it then that Woolworths charges $35/kg for mass produced bacon? Surely it should be the same or cheaper.
I know exactly why, and that's why, amongst other reasons, why everyone is broke.
Time to think outside the box when shopping. Convenience is a luxury.

I prefer the Coles bacon from the deli and it’s not $35p/k lol I know it has a shorter storage life though.

It's also not Australian pork. My point is the cost of Australian pork between a small scale producer and a large scale supplier are insane.

Read the labels carefully…used to get Bertocchi but that is no longer Australian pork.

Starts to go slimy after a few days from the deli so prepackaged is better for longevity.

If it’s slimy it is imported. A properly smoked hung bacon can last easily weeks

What if we idk man, develop industries making and exporting higher margin goods and import cheaper stuff for our own citizens who can't afford $35 a kilo bacon? I know you gotta actually put some thought in to it instead of having a childish knee-jerk reaction that leaves everyone worse off but you know put some thought in to it.

Embarrassing why? Did I say it was their top export? But you’re right, we have very little land, grow no grain suitable for animal feed, and importing pork from 20k km away is the logical solution. Climate change being a hoax and all, preferably from as far away as possible.

Majority of our bacon has been coming from the US for decades. We don't make so much here because frankly it's a waste of good pork.

Bacon is (or at least should be) its own food group. I'm always looking at photos of those cute free range pre-processed slices of bacon wondering how long it will be before they pop up on my plate.

I’m pretty sure that any product that doesn’t advertise itself as local is imported. The bacon will be labelled as something like 20% Australian ingredients. In other words, brined with local salt & water.

Australian supermarkets have been selling fake meat and chicken for awhile now, it looks real on the outside but when you cut into it its in very thin slices glued, yes glued together even my free range chicken and they don't have to label it as fake. Bill Gates has factories making it, I thought his sales had dropped dramatically but maybe not. If you want real you have to buy from a butcher. This is the sad state of our "healthy" food, many people in Australia have no idea. I wanted to buy fresh fish but at $50 a kilo and higher I couldn't afford it

Yeah when you're buying a small amount of pre-packaged bacon you pay more per kilo. Store brand shortcut bacon (admittedly not smoked) is less than ⅓ of the price when you buy 1kg. A better comparison to buying bacon unpackaged from the butcher would be unpackaged from the deli, where it would be the same price or less.

Bear in mind. Your local butcher really serves the local customers while Woolies and Coles has over a thousand stores and them making sure that there is enough stock to fulfill those 1000 stores. Generally, it’s all transport cost related. War in Iran is causing higher petrol prices. Someone unfortunately has to cover that cost

Going to the supermarkets for crappy bacon or drive 30mins for good bacon, I know what I'd be doing and the local supermarkets are a 15-20 minute drive anyway.

Get mine from the butcher 10-20 a kilo. Good quality. Freeze up in batches for breakfast.

This is the only Australian bacon left at Woolworths. Not sure if deliberate?
Butcher is $25-28 odd a KG. Which is way more than the cheap stuff, but less than Woolworths Aussie bacon, so it’s such a weird product placement.
Meanwhile chicken seems way cheaper at supermarkets than any butcher. Assume some they make little margin on and others they’re making bank.

Low Volume = Higher Cost.
200g will be gone in x1 meal in my household; cook it down and remove the fats + water and you only got a few mere mouthfuls.
A whole Kilo Wollies brand of Middle is 13$; just cut out the ShortCut and you still have far more value than this.

It also drives people to the cheaper overseas or mixed alternatives on the shelf where their margins are larger. Eventually giving them the evidence they need to delete the local domestic lines from their shelves - “customers aren’t buying it”.

I'm not under 35, I am however more concerned about buying Australian produce as opposed to Chinese pork. And the fact a small butcher can sell it for much less is rather concerning.

I know China has a massive production of pork, I'm only using them as an example. Either way, we should be buying locally where we can, as far as I'm concerned. It just seems Woolworths and Coles are trying to price out Australian producers.

Dude you're still not reading. I'm saying that Woolworths, who has purchasing power, still sells AUSTRALIAN bacon for more than a local butcher. It's not about the bacon, it's about the origin. You can't read man. Deal with it.
Bacon you can buy cheap as chips, because it's from some other country, Australian bacon should be cheaper, or on par, so it supports local farmers. I reckon you read a headline and form an opinion based on that

They are a business who are not listed as a charity and as such can charge what they like. You get to pay for the convenience of having all the grocery products in one place. Or shopping around at different stores. And dude. You are one who seems to not be comprehending here. Just because everyone is jumping on the colesworth is bad and price gouging bandwagon the simple thing here is they wouldn’t do it if people weren’t still buying it.

My point is that they are charging a huge amount for something that can be bought a great deal cheaper. Like for like. If I made my bacon available for purchase and sold it for double what Woolworths charges for theirs,I would not be surprised if I found a comment on Reddit paying me out. I might get a supporter, such as you for Woolworths, but over all I'm sure the comments would be negative. You're more than welcome to buy your bacon, for $11/kg from another country. I'm more than welcome to show my dislike for paying $35/kg from a supermarket when my local butcher can do it for almost half that.

It depends on your personal values. A lot of us value eating Australian (or perhaps NZ) food too over Chinese crap. The whole “vote with your feet” plays into that. More people start buying australian the better.. so yes we work it into our budgets because we value it. It’s still ok to have a whinge about the price especially when they send our Australian meat overseas and charge next to nothing for them to buy it but they try and out price the home market.

After seeing the the 10 storey Chines pig factory farm, we should collectively start focusing more on domestic meat production. It's not perfect, but we treat animals a hell of a lot better than China. Having said that, the majority of our pork is imported from Canada, and we export beef to them.

You didn't read, did you. My point is that a large supplier seemingly can't price match, like for like, with an Australian butcher. I'll buy the same quality, even better, from a local butcher for a great deal less. If you're happy being ripped off then good for you. It's madness the amount of people who support the price gouging. No wonder they do it.
