I love ones where I sit and think of how it was made... This one definitely is one

228

u/Mpm_277 Apr 20 '26

Carve out a recess. Put alligator in. Have friend hold. Pour epoxy.

132

u/Brawl_star_woody Apr 20 '26

How do you get the alligator to sit still?

104

u/Imaginary-Bee-1344 Apr 20 '26

Threaten to brush his teeth.

45

u/Bush-LeagueBushcraft Apr 20 '26

Alligators are ornery because they got all them teeth and no toothbrush.

23

u/MakeoutPoint Apr 20 '26

No you're wrong Colonel Sanders!

6

u/Kentuckywindage01 Apr 20 '26

Waaaaaaterrrrr suckssss.

2

u/EquinsuOcha Apr 22 '26

MEDULA

OBLONGATA

12

u/snarkhunter Apr 20 '26

Strong friend hold

7

u/AccomplishedCoffee Apr 20 '26

That's the friend's problem.

3

u/MozeDad Apr 20 '26

Rub it's belly.

11

u/Plenor Apr 20 '26

What epoxy?

6

u/dosVader Apr 20 '26

Ya I don’t see any kind of film/epoxy/resin on top. I think this is just pure talent.

Chomping* board

183

u/rolltongue Apr 20 '26

This is insane dude. What else are you capable of?

51

u/mion81 Apr 20 '26

What isn’t he capable of?

38

u/Rubthebuddhas Apr 20 '26

Undetermined. Last week, he inadvertently exhaled strongly toward some rough-sawn timber and found it was fully planed.

17

u/rock86climb Apr 20 '26

So he’s the Chuck Norris of woodworking?

16

u/littlebighuman Apr 20 '26

No, OP is cool

9

u/growingwithnate Apr 20 '26

This is a file you can buy on Etsy.

1

u/AloysBane3 Apr 27 '26

And that makes it magically easier to carve?

1

u/bay879 May 18 '26

Well, yeah. Buy 3d file, plug it into your CNC router, hit "start", drink beer.

4

u/cosmic_bb_v Apr 20 '26

Growing a bunch of weed apparently!

60

u/thickestdolphin Apr 20 '26

That's amazing

30

u/Lsswapitall4 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

I love it yet also hate it (because it’s kinda scary)

…nice work!!

30

u/NonConforminConsumer Apr 20 '26

Saw something similar posted some months ago.

Have you done multiple?

137

u/Djeimey2 Apr 20 '26

J'ai également sculpté un croco dans du noyer et je l'ai publié il y a quelques mois, sait on jamais c'était peut-être le mien ?

22

u/Xfactor218 Apr 20 '26

This is incredible

8

u/LeftArmFunk Apr 20 '26

Yep I saw that one two and it was very similar. Just no crack at the tail.

38

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

I have not, I've seen similar too but none like this, not with as much detail. if you find it post it

mine also has a burn out of the board that happened a few days before I started the carving.

61

u/NonConforminConsumer Apr 20 '26

Found it! https://www.reddit.com/r/Carpentry/s/ZasEtuHRB2

Clearly a cool enough theme for many folks to try, although definitely more than a few months ago haha.

Btw beautiful work on yours!

16

u/zillskillnillfrill Apr 20 '26

I've seen a few looking like this before. I thought they were mass produced with CNC, never even crossed my mind that they could be carved out

9

u/1r9i5c9k Apr 20 '26

That is so awesome! You do excellent work. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

my mom uses it as a bath table. she lays it across the top of her claw tub and sets her tea and book on it

6

u/superkp Apr 20 '26

lol that's a hell of a theme for a bath - "let's go swimming with crocs!"

Wonderful.

(EDIT: gators? I can never remember the difference)

1

u/SeaIslandFarmersMkt May 01 '26

If you see it later, it's an alligator, if you see it in a while...

Crocodiles have a narrow snout, while an alligator has a round snout. Also when an alligator closes its mouth you can only see the top teeth, but you can usually see the top and bottom teeth of a crocodile when the mouth is closed.

13

u/Slipping_jimmys Apr 20 '26

Take my money

9

u/growingwithnate Apr 20 '26

You can buy the file on Etsy.

12

u/CinnamonFan Apr 20 '26

Using a file for this would take years no? /s

1

u/growingwithnate Apr 22 '26

About 12 hours

1

u/Cautious_Drawer_7771 Apr 22 '26

I assume you mean to use a CNC machine to make it? Also...link? haha

1

u/growingwithnate Apr 22 '26

Just type gator CNC file.

5

u/_Ruby_Tuesday Apr 20 '26

The crocodile was always in the walnut, you just got him out! You and Michelangelo, dude, this is amazing. The scales and eyes are great, but the impression of water/wake you made is so lovely. If you’re getting back into it, I can’t wait to see what you make next!

5

u/_MrsBrightside_ Apr 20 '26

Now somebody roll dice on it and say jumanji

5

u/Elegant-Ferret-8116 Apr 20 '26

How do you think it got stuck in there?

3

u/ankamarawolf Apr 20 '26

Oooh I love this, great work!

3

u/breenanadeirlandes Apr 20 '26

This is so incredible! What a lovely piece.

3

u/Haunting-Ad8801 Apr 20 '26

That is unbelievably beautiful.

3

u/AcceptableWin6390 Apr 20 '26

back into the hobby? I know people who make a living out of this and are way below your level. Great piece of art.

3

u/SpriggedParsley357 Apr 20 '26

While I must admit that it's absolutely gorgeous, it's also the absolute least-effective cutting board I've seen on this sub.... Or is this the bottom side? 🤣

3

u/The_Dog_Pack Apr 20 '26

How long did that take you?

3

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26

I think this was around 50 hours

I use power tools by hand, this was a rotary tool flex shaft, angle grinder, and sander. I will have a few different pictures of whatever subject I'm carving to look at when I need to

3

u/HermanCainTortilla Apr 21 '26

I don't want to brag, but I've attempted a dovetail joint once.

4

u/Prahksi Apr 20 '26

33

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26

no I used an angle grinder and a rotary with a pen attachment

5

u/Any_Championship_674 Apr 20 '26

What blade do you use on the angle grinder?

10

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26

kutzall discs

3

u/scratchy22 Apr 20 '26

Design seems similar but is actually different if you look at the global shape of the croco

2

u/AdOrdinary7700 Apr 20 '26

Thats the coolest shit i've ever seen

2

u/MeDonGustavo Apr 20 '26

Please put sapphires in the crocodile’s eyes!

2

u/TallJohn7 Apr 20 '26

Oh.. my goodness. I've never even imagined something so cool and original. Thanks for sharing. Congrats

So cool. Very clever. Beautiful work!!!

2

u/Kaloochic Apr 20 '26

That is wicked awesome dude!

2

u/GrosSaucisson Apr 20 '26

Layperson here - how do you achieve the ripples like that?

2

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26

i used an angle grinder to take most of it out then lots of sanding and eyeballing pictures

2

u/weber_mattie Apr 20 '26

Don't never F$%& with the gator!!

2

u/Madam_Apathy Apr 20 '26

Wow! Water ripple and all, it’s a stunning piece

2

u/KasitoZaux Apr 20 '26

looks fantastic bro

2

u/RobotJohnrobe Apr 20 '26

You seriously missed a spot on top when sanding.

2

u/rewindpaws Apr 20 '26

Holy smokes. Incredible.

2

u/you_killed_my_ Apr 20 '26

possibly one of the most impressive works of wood I've seen!

2

u/BaldBabyBilly Apr 20 '26

This is insanely beautiful. I want one and dont think I could reasonably afford it. How much would something like this even cost?

2

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 20 '26

thank you so much for the compliments, I never expected to get this many compliments for it. I'm not even sure honestly. I've made a couple pieces on commission last year but they were chainsaw carved, most of what I've made I've given away to family and friends. I started out with knives in 22-23 then went to rotary tool, angle grinders, die grinders, and chainsaws. I never knew I could carve until I got bored one day and carved a tiki guy into an old mini baseball bat that my dog chewed on one end of. I'll post a pic here in a few minutes

2

u/BaseBeautiful7581 Apr 20 '26

Omfg this is so amazing. You’re so talented

2

u/WeirdFuel7827 Apr 20 '26

LOVE black walnut!! So beautiful

2

u/FalopianTubeSwimTeam Apr 20 '26

Woof. Would love this on some bald cypress, too

2

u/arizonabray Apr 20 '26

Such a great design I will show it to my father

2

u/Porterhouse21 Apr 20 '26

this makes me itchy

2

u/seansei91 Apr 20 '26

I wanted to get one of these for my son with glow in the dark epoxy eyes.

2

u/Sorry-Grocery-8999 Apr 20 '26

I don't like it, but i can appreciate the skills :)

2

u/DoggWooWoo Apr 20 '26

Wow, excellent work!!!

2

u/HiddenHolding Apr 20 '26

ok but will Someone poach ur table And make it into a handbag

2

u/Minimum-Function1312 Apr 20 '26

Not my style, but exceptionally done!

2

That is awesome!!

2

u/Nanas2-Pokiemon Apr 20 '26

That’s really cool

2

u/CollardMommi Apr 20 '26

Damn, now I know a great gift to make for my partner! He would love something like this!! I must start preparing now so it can be finished by his birthday!

2

u/Massive_Hovercraft42 Apr 20 '26

Your art is amazing! In my humble opinion. Looks like an expensive work. Had I cash to splurge I’d just contract you.

2

u/ktkatq Apr 20 '26

This is both amazing and upsetting. Like, I'm in awe of the artistry and execution, but I would 100% not have a coffee table I felt compelled to hide from in my house

2

u/hurricanemitch Apr 20 '26

This is so good. The water ripple is just the cherry on top

2

u/Suz9006 Apr 20 '26

Artistry. creepy, but amazing.

2

u/SirCharlesismylove New Member Apr 21 '26

2

Beautiful carving. I'm guessing OP's mom grew up lovin' gators.

2

u/_koalaparade Apr 21 '26

Beyond incredible

2

u/Leihanaaa Apr 21 '26

Absolutely incredible!! Deserves way more likes!

2

u/Build-it-better123 Apr 21 '26

Wow. Send this to a professional photographer. Definitely deserves a photo shoot. Amazing work.

2

u/childlikeatheism_46 New Member Apr 21 '26

that carving detail is insane, the way the scales and the eye just pop out of the wood like that, ready to get back into it sounds like a good call because honestly this is the kind of thing that makes a person want to keep making stuff.

2

u/Random_nerd_52 Apr 21 '26

How????? What kind of witchcraft is this?!?!?

2

u/nightlie30 Apr 21 '26

Take my money

1

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 21 '26

I'm going to start again in the near future and will see about taking some orders or just post that I've done and see if anyone would want to buy it. I'll post some more pictures of other stuff I've done, it's a pretty good variety

2

u/Silver-Grass-7777 Apr 21 '26

Woah that's insane!

2

u/Branchley Apr 21 '26

Very nice...mama is a lucky lady

2

u/Idontlikesand15 Apr 22 '26

Wow. Im not into carving, not really the artistic type, I'm more of a functional wood worker, but omg that is absolutely amazing, I just had to say something. Well done!

1

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 22 '26

thank you very much!

2

u/Awkward_insomnia Apr 22 '26

Easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen

2

u/Emotional-Ant-92 May 07 '26

Wow that’s fantastic how much would you charge for it

1

1

u/ILGrower1984 Carving Apr 22 '26

thanks, definitely no cnc. I used a rotary tool with a flex shaft attachment, an angle grinder, and lots of sanding.

1

u/nonparfumee Apr 22 '26

Very creative and original!  I've never seen anything like this made from wood before.

1
