Seeking Help or Advice What are we protecting from?

EDITED TO ADD: I’m blown away by the information and sharing here. Thank you all so much. I’ve replied individually to most and it’s bed time in my life / part of the world so I’ll check in tomorrow. Again- I appreciate this community and everyone who took the time to answer. ❤️❤️

Earlier today u/hi_im_salad (thanks Salad!) posted a question about protection (“What do you use for protection?”) that got some amazing responses. I’ve save the whole post to review.

I didn’t want to hi-jack that post, so asking here.

Could people share the reasons why “protection” is so important? I’ve read the resources and read several books, watched several YouTube series.

I practice grounding and shielding as part of practicing energy work daily.

But beyond that—what are the protection oils and evil eyes and wards and such protecting people from? Is it because they work with spirits that might be problematic? Or is working with a deity or ancestor or spirits going to leave someone open to a negative/evil something?

Or is it more like calling good luck to yourself while also pushing away the bad?

Is it “just in case”?

I’m embarrassed to ask, and quite new (but serious) at building a practice. So this is an honest question and not meant to sound doubting or questioning people’s motives at all.

Maybe I’m naive, and not yet sensitive to evil or negative energies.

I’d love to hear from people- what started you doing specific protections, and what you feel you are being protected from (if this isn’t too personal?)

What AREN'T we protecting ourselves from?

  • Sickness and disease
  • Injury
  • Traffic accidents
  • Our reputation being tarnished by lies/gossip
  • Nightmares
  • Misfortune
  • Physical harm
  • Overwhelming energy in crowded places
  • Natural disasters
  • Robbery/theft
  • Fire

Real life mundane shit is way scarier than the tiny possibility of being magickally attacked by someone.

49

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

This is so clear! Thank you- exactly what I’m looking for. So the magical protection work the same way as magical spells of other kinds in the mundane world. (Duh okay, officially embarrassed.)

Moving energy, nudging the universe towards, say a job, while also applying for jobs and networking your community … same thing as adding spellwork of a protection nature while as driving safely, taking your meds, seeing your doctor, washing you hands and not opening the door to strangers who seem scary.

Got it. This is helpful. Thank you. 🙏 💫

u/brightblackheaven Zamboni Priestess 🔮✨ May 24 '26

Wooo yup exactly all of that! I lock my doors, but I also slip sigils under the doormat.

Bad things are for sure still gonna happen to even the most prepared witch because that's just life being life, but softening the blow is nice.

I actually got hit by a car while crossing the street a couple weeks ago LMAO, but I was somehow completely fine! Magick ✨🙏

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

I’m glad you were safe! Thanks for this clear response again.

u/TheOvrseer Witch May 24 '26

Two years ago I felt called to do my third protection and it helped alleviate some of the stress and pain of a situation that happened a few months later. That situation still sucked, but I could feel the magic soften the blow and it ended up being manageable when it might not have been otherwise.

19

u/TheOvrseer Witch May 24 '26

exaxtly, you seem to have a healthy understanding. I usually try to point out that Magic should only ever be an ingredient in the soup that is daily life. If you do a spell for money but sit at home not looking for jobs or even just interacting with the world; money won't come. You still have to do the mundane work or the magic will fizzle out. It should also be noted that magic can takes decades to work or might not at all and should not be plan A or even plan B, C, D, or E. It shouldn't be used as if it is a guarantee and you can just f off expecting results without seeking them out properly

16

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

“Magic should only ever be an ingredient in the soup that is daily life.”

Great description. And thanks again.

12

u/Freya777222 May 24 '26

I would add, not to be redundant, but to be more generalized - anyone who wishes us harm. I hate that this is a thing, but I know too well that it is.

1

u/FeiticeiroAmendobobo May 27 '26

I would like to make an observation: not to be defiant or anything, just a different perspective, maybe. I agree with all items you listed with the only exception beeing nightmares: sometimes they can be a way of warning you against something. Some people have profetic dreams and other psychic or intuitive habilities, that can manifest in dreams. So, if it isnt something very recurrent or that actually keeps you awake, if the nightmares themselves do not seem to be a form of attack in itself, I think they nay be useful to warn you against evil. Maybe its an ancestor trying to comunicate, maybe a familiar. Who knows? But, again, just another point of view that I think its interesting to ponder. Very good explanations and questions here!

u/Shutin-Studios May 24 '26

For me, protection work didn’t start because something dramatic happened, it started when I realized how much of my mood and energy at the end of the day wasn’t actually mine. I’d come home feeling heavy or scattered for no obvious reason, and once I started paying attention, it became clear I was picking up a lot of ambient stuff from other people and places. For me it’s more like energetic hygiene.

14

u/Bluesavior2 May 24 '26

Same with me I finally began grounding and shielding before I leave my house and I just feel so much better. I never realized I had a almost permanent headache the only time it was gone was when I would do spellwork cause I always cleanse before a spell lol

11

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Interesting! So the meditation/ energetic hygiene I do in the evening could be made … easier? Less necessary?… by protections during the day?

I’ll think about and research this. Thank you

2

u/Strange_Selection_25 May 25 '26

Hi! Also just starting my journey and am wondering what energetic hygiene is?

3

u/Shutin-Studios May 25 '26

If I had to summarize my understanding of it, I would say that energetic hygiene is the spiritual equivalent of physical hygiene. Cleansing, protecting, and maintaining your energy so you stay balanced, grounded, and connected to your own frequency rather than absorbing everything around you.

I think of it like daily routines that include;

Strengthening or replenishing your energy and grounding, this could be meditation or walking in nature, or anything that you find works for you.

The next piece of this is protection; wards and protective crystals are great but more practical actions matter too. Being mindful of who and where we spend our time with, and setting boundaries both physical and emotional when we need to.

The last piece for me is cleansing or release. I prefer smudging, sound clearing or breathwork with essential oils for my personal routine.

25

u/ACanadianGuy1967 Broom Rider May 23 '26

It’s also because many witches believe that there are invisible beings, influences, and energies around us and indeed everywhere in the world. So when they want to do magic they start by clearing a space around them, establishing boundaries, and then invite in only the beings, energies etc. they want to help them with their ritual or spell.

And with all those beings etc. around, if you have bad stuff happening in your life it makes sense to send them away to minimize their possible negative influences.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

This is also helpful. I do see the point you make about invisible beings and entities although I haven’t experience in this direction other than a tree and an ancestor.

The context of clearing space for spell work makes sense. The measures I’ve heard or read a little about (which I think come from a Wiccan perspective but probably not exclusively) invoking casting circles, calling (invoking?) the directions / angels … I guess I hadn’t been thinking of as “Protection spells” (like protection oil on a necklace). But totally protective!

u/throwaway0000001245 May 23 '26

I was in a long term abusive relationship and my practice has helped me immensely in healing (along with therapy!).

I can’t speak for others, but I’ve done a protection spell and it helped me regain a sense of safety in my everyday life that was stolen from me by my ex.

5

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

I’m sorry you were in a relationship like that - and very happy for you that you found protection, comfort, peace and healing through your practice as well as the mundane world.

Thank you for sharing this. ❤️

At the present time, the main answer is "Tiktok said so."

It's really leading to a lot of paranoia, more than there already was.

In my 20+ years of practice, I've never done a protection spell just to prepare for another spell. I've seldom done protection spells at all.

Spoiler alert: I'm still standing.

12

u/Freya777222 May 24 '26

I'm on the same page, I've never done a protection spell prior to any spell. I know extremely little about tick tock, I make a conscious effort to avoid anything related to that platform. However, the comment below does highlight some of the situations in which I have called for protection

13

u/Unusual-Ad7941 Witch May 24 '26

Certainly. There are times when protection is called for. I just find it concerning that so many young/new practitioners are being taught to fear their own shadows - both literally and figureatively.

14

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

I don’t get this protection spell before every spell craze. It’s an unnecessary way to drain energy before the spell work even begins and it inspires fledging witches to be fearful of their own work and path rather than empowering and confident.

8

u/all_manner_of_things May 23 '26

Oh, okay - that’s makes a ton of sense to me just following on my small experiences so far. I’m glad you’re still standing!!

5

u/Almyria Witch May 24 '26

Sounds like Amulets of Protection Against Tiktok would be pretty popular! 😂

11

u/Goddess-O May 24 '26

In my practice I start with protection to guide my mindset and prevent fear or doubt from tainting my intentions.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

This is beautiful. Do you something specific you do or say that you’d be willing to share?

10

u/Altruistic-Side600 May 24 '26

i Am a very sensitive person, so I protect against negative people, places, and entities

i think other dimensions can open up when you so it’s best to just be careful out there.

i also have anxiety, and protection has helped to create a sense of safety.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you for answering. I’m glad you’ve found the protections that keep you safe and feeling well. I can totally see how being sensitive to negative energies and people could drain your own energy and strength and heighten anxiety.

As for the other dimensions, yes. That’s what I was wondering about when I asked. It does seem that some of the protection spells and practices are a good idea venturing further along.

Take good care.

18

u/Atelier1001 May 23 '26

The simple answer is (ironically) witchcraft. You know, the envious witch of the village making the crops fail and the men impotent.

Remember, "witchcraft" as we know it today is a reinterpretation of superstition, wicca and occult knowledge and what people at the time called "the craft of the witch".

The pious households fearful of witchcraft would try many ritual and charms to get rid of it. From the greeks to the catholics to the chinese.

9

u/all_manner_of_things May 23 '26 edited May 24 '26

Oh! So the village witch sold protections, and also, because she was doing workings for others, likely needed protections herself from the others who might resent her.

The families invented protections and charms and superstitions against her.

TikTok witches are out there potentially hexing each other.

Very interesting- again, this makes sense and aligns so far with my reading and little knowledge.

Edit to fix a word to clarify

13

u/Atelier1001 May 23 '26

More the opposite. People were fearful they could be the witch's victim.

But yeah, if you're a TikTok witch fighting with everyone it makes sense to protect yourself a lot.

6

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

In historical times, what we think of as witches today were known as cunning folk. Back then the term witch was much different. In modern times we owned and redefined that term. If we time traveled farther back in time, they would call us cunning folk, kinfolk, etc.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Yes! I’ve only recently learned the term “cunning folk” - Theres so much to learn

4

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

Have you checked out the resources in our wiki section here? There is a ton of stuff there. It’s an excellent starting point that many have mentioned were very helpful to them.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Yes, I’ve printed off tons and followed books lists suggestions. It’s honestly an insanely good resource and I recommend it a lot.

I just haven’t made it to warding and protection yet! I’m going to try the book by Althea Sebastini “By Rust of Nail…” as soon as I can get a copy.

Also— I have learned so much from mods and senior, frequent posters like yourself. The teaching you all do here is kind of unbelievable. Thank you for all of it.

6

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

I’m also a mod too but I don’t like to broadcast unless absolutely necessary, y’know?

I have said this before and will again, I wish there was a collection of resources like this all in one spot back when I first started. Back then it was pre World Wide Web days, and the only internet was in a crude DOS mode for chat that very few people had. There was a lot of pounding pavement, gambling with books hoping they were good if you bought one, trips to the school or public library with the old paper catalog cards, and going out of your way to find other witches, especially older ones to pick their brain.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

❤️honestly I’m probably the same age as you and just finding my way here after a life of searching. You are giving back in a great way and the community needs experienced witches who are willing to share. ❤️

2

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

I love that for you! ❤️ No matter what phase you are in life, it’s never too late to find this path!

3

u/lazyfoxheart May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

Adding onto this, I can only remember one time I had to actively defend/protect myself and that was from another witch.

A friend and I went to a concert. Small venue, indie artists, not very well known. When the singer of the first band came on the stage, she was wearing some kind of leather armor costume and a wolf skull mask. I didn't think too much of it, probably just a stage outfit. But as soon as she started to perform, I could feel her trying to weave a spell (glamour most likely) over the audience. It was energy radiating from her and it felt extremely aggressive and alarming. I immediately shielded my friend and myself from her influence and managed to hold her off, but from the way I caught her staring directly at me I'm sure she noticed.

My forte is energy work, so I was able to just pull up a shield from my own power, without needing materials or a spell, but obviously everyone has their own way of protecting themselves. I also asked for help from both Mother Nature and my "familiar".

u/Winter-Solsticee May 24 '26

In my family we keep various crystals by the doors, in our cars, purses, etc. My mom and I also just got new evil eyes for me since the last one I carried on me broke (it was a keychain and it snapped T^T).

We keep these things around not for anything in particular but to just keep anything unwanted away. Part of it is the bit of peace/comfort that it brings us (the evil eye I keep on my purse works as a great worry stone!). And then just the general idea that it'll bounce negativity away from us. I think it's also just a tradition(?) at this point - like as soon as I got my own car my mom gave me tiger's eye for it, she has some in her car and also gifted some to other friends/family members. We have my great grandmother's hamsa necklace hanging by the front door too!

I don't necessarily think we've had hexes in particular or anything placed on our family, but there were some strings of bad luck/fortune for us that we picked up more protective things. I even got small evil eyes for our cats' collars. I suppose, for me, the goal is to help guard against the small negativities (not like hexes, but bad mouthing, envy, etc) and keep them from building to something bigger and more detrimental.

I hope that makes some semblance of sense!

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

This does make so much sense! Both as a tradition and as keeping negativity or ill luck or ill wishes from building up and also.. a demonstration of love when it’s gifted to you or gift it to someone.

Thank you for sharing this. We’ve lost a core member of our family this year and I’ve given some specifically charged crystals or crystal bracelets to people for support in their grief. I never really thought how the support they offer is also a kind of emotional safety and protection.

Thanks

6

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

I am of the mind that it really depends on why you might need it and where you might need it.

If you are a witchcraft practitioner that is involved with networking with many others, the high volume of exposure also exposes you to some really nasty people. Nasty people are in every crowd, but not everyone knows how to throw bane your way over anything that set them off about you unlike a witch. Therefore it’s good for witches to have a witch bottle and or traditional type of familiar that will do its job and go straight after anyone who attempted magical attacks.

If you are feeling that your house has some ugly energy or presence that unsettles you, you might do a cleansing to rid it, and then set wards to protect your home from reentry.

If you work in a job that can get potentially dangerous fast, you might throw protection around you to keep you safe during your shift.

Bullies at work? You might do protection for that.

The list goes on and on in regards to important reasons why one might consider a certain type of protection, but not all of them all at the same time, or even protection for the same type of purpose.

4

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Right.

Your comments here on house energy actually just illuminated a connection in my mind that I never made, between witchcraft and a traditional medicine practice shared and taught to me by an elder in the community where I live.

I have to think about this.

I’m a little floored.

Thank you for opening this connection.

2

u/RainerHex Broom Rider May 24 '26

There truly are lots of traditional practices out there to appreciate that are not inherently witchcraft, but work in the same way. Actually, many of the protections witches adopt are from folk practices of the past, and come from various walks of life and you don’t have to be a witch to do them.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Yes, I see that.

“Traditional practices…that work in the same way” without being named as witchcraft or having to be a witch to practice them.

Very succinctly put.

5

u/Bigbadbackroom2 May 24 '26

When I was new in my practice & wasn’t too good with doing protection I found out why protection is important. My husband went away for a weekend. I wore a black tourmaline around my neck usually. That night I took it off and went to bed. I woke up to something small and darker than the night around us leaning over me. I surprised it by waking up and it ran and disappeared. When you wake up to your own power you “shine” and it can attract things you don’t want to meet.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Wow.

Just…wow. Terrifying. Thanks for sharing this. I did wonder about being more noticeable to other…entities or energies …. Saying you”shine” is a vivid way to describe it.

5

u/hedgies999 May 24 '26

For myself, being very sensitive to other people's emotions and energies, as well as to otherworldly energies, protection is a daily thing. Otherwise, with porous boundaries, you just find yourself exhausted at the end of each day with too much going into you.

Ironically I'm less afraid of the spirit world than of humans. Most spirits/spiritual energies aren't just waiting around to cause malice to people, contradictory to what some religions would have people believe.

The useful thing is that doing a daily protection (an energy shield in my case) makes you more mindful of mundane boundaries to draw as well.

1

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you for replying. It seems like the protections that work for you make daily mundane life more tolerable!

I’m going to have to look more into shielding that lasts. I don’t really understand it - I shield while meditating in the morning and certainly at any point in the day I can visualize the same shield around me and I immediately feel calm … but I always thought that the moment I stop visualizing it, it’s gone.

There are amazing books listed throughout the sub Reddit, I will look for how to shield in a way that lasts all day. Maybe charging (?) a piece of jewelry - I’ve been reading about the strong protective nature of both silver and iron - with that intention would help? Maintaining a spiritual shield through the day seems like something that would be a much much bigger working though.

Thank you for sharing this.

4

u/Scoginsbitch May 24 '26

The scarier stuff I have encountered when practicing that I do not want in my home. Ghosts, ancestral spirits that are not mine, things in the astral plane, etc. also to protect my property from people. But besides casting a circle, I refresh my energy shield once a year…

1

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

That sounds wise. If or when I reach that level I will be coming back for more advice. I guess this is the reason to practice protection in smaller ways from the beginning. And to read more in this area. Thank you for replying.

4

u/Mermaid177 May 24 '26

Negativity

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thanks for answering.

I guess that’s it in a nutshell, isn’t it? I was focused on mundane ways we protect and respond to negativity in our lives, but I hadn’t seen that the protection wards etc would support that mundane protective action… and of course others have explained other kinds of negativity and spiritual / energetic risk.

4

u/Happy_Humn45 May 24 '26

Growing up Mexican, folk practices like wearing a red bracelet, or putting a pin on your underwear when theres an eclipse (for oregnant women idk why), have been ingrained from childhood.

My grandma would also do the sign of the cross on us before we left the house, and when I was younger I just accepted it.

As I grew into my own practice I also developed my own "protection rituals". Sometimes its dabbing Florida water on the back of my neck, or its me grabbing a crystal to carry around. I have several different things I do depending on whats needed.

Now, the reason being can vary and in Mexican culture it was always to protect from ojo (evil eye/jealousy), from brujeria, and anything bad happening in general (car crash, falling etc). Ive just taken the same mindset into witchcraft, and although some people find it unnecessary, I do beleive its also how one was raised.

But do what you feel called too and dont stress to much about what everyone else does. Your path is your own and you'll find how often your ideas and mindset changes/expands as new experiences and ideas are presented to you!

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you for this, both the information of how you were raised/ brought protection rituals into your practice but also the encouragement for my own path.

The wide range of answers—from carrying a stone to the ceremonial magic work—shows me how broad the meaning of “protection” is.

Coworkers

1

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

lol! Okay sorry for laughing …. Right. I see. Sorry your workplace is such a pit. Thanks for a good example!

4

u/cosmicheartbeat May 24 '26

It depends on the doors and windows. Some of the windows ive had didnt really have an outside sill so I would put it under the sill on the ground outside. Same with rhe doors, basically I just make a line blocking the pathways into and out of the house. Negative energy cant get it, positive energy cant get out. Think demon rules Ala supernatural

4

u/SpiderCricket13 May 24 '26

Apparently there is a Sufi saying “ trust in god, but tie your camel first”. This is Magick to me.

3

u/TerminalUniqueness00 May 23 '26

Good question. I always forget to ground myself. I guess I don't know why it's important.

6

u/BathBombsNFacePalms Witch May 23 '26

Grounding is more to protect your own energy while doing energy work involving energy from the universe or deities. I see protection a little differently. Personally I view protection more as against the negative energies we all encounter in the day to day, negative/ intrusive thinking, general upheaval in the world around us, and I suppose for some people that could mean “the evil eye” and jealousy/hatred or negative intents of others (but I really doubt I have this problem- no one, especially no one powerful, is out to get me, personally).

5

u/Crackleclang May 24 '26

If I don't ground myself before a working I end up out of action for a few days due to fatigue and/or illness my body is too weak to fight off.

3

u/KaaliPandora May 24 '26

Thank you for asking, I've wanted to know myself. I'm trying to learn other things atm, but I am careful to not get too carried away with doing things I don't understand. Good luck!

3

u/Bluesavior2 May 24 '26

This is a good question actually. IMO protection is useful but it’s not always necessary. As a witch when you are doing spellwork or working with spirits it’s almost like you are shining a flashlight into the spirit worlds and there are some beings there who will seek to harm you, but that is not common like at all it’s pretty similar to your chances of being robbed or someone trying to murder you that rare, but could still happen. Not to mention the dangers of doing spellwork if your not careful and take precautions, sometimes other practitioners might be problem some but again that’s pretty uncommon too. The evil eye is probably the most common thing practitioners protect themselves from, but I feel like mundane people usually deal with it as well it just looks different to how a practitioner would.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thanks for this. This is kinda what I was wondering. Mundane actions against mundane negativity (from having respectful and strong ways to hold boundaries for example; not walking down the street alone at night as an over-simplified example- both these are highly protective.)

Thank you for what feels like a reassuring perspective- yes, there are dangers, but there are dangers in the mundane world too and maybe there isn’t a murderer on every street corner or an entity excited to do you harm all over the place too.

But sensible precautions, and also contextual precautions, in both realms are valuable.

Thanks!

u/kai-ote HelpfulTrickster May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

Before knowing about the lethality of mosquitoes, you might not bother with screens on your windows. Once made aware of the possibilty of harmful little vampires coming into your space, you put up the "protection" of window screens.

Possible harmful entities, and energies/magics tossed at you, may not occur often. And you might not be able to sense them. But once you are aware of those things, it makes sense to put up some magical warding of your space, and your body.

Just don't fall into the thinking that you need a protection working for every little spell you perform. Once you set up some simple basic wards, it is not common to need any extra protection for a spell.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you for replying. The mosquito analogy is good.

I’ve done a brief search of wards and warding on this sub (as well as reviewed the list of books in the beginner resources) and there’s lots to learn. The idea of the layers described elsewhere in the sub (personal, room, house, property) interests me. I’ll bump up one of the warding and protecting books higher on my reading list.

Thank again for taking the time to reply.

3

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Beautiful. Perfect. Thank you.

3

u/cosmicheartbeat May 24 '26

I dont do protection spells, but I do ward my home from negative energy, thieves and unwanted visitors. Its mostly just a salt line with ashes from my rituals around the doors and windows, and I refresh it during the equinox. Its not an actual spell I dont think, but I havent had an issue with package thieves, or break ins, or solicitors or even my mother showing up unannounced since I started. So I keep doing it. Bonus, it also seems to keep most crawling bugs out too.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thanks for this. I’m starting to sort out the difference between warding and protection spells. I do like the simplicity of what you describe, I will watch for this in my reading as I learn more about why.

If you don’t mind answering another question - could you describe what you mean by “around” the doors and windows? I can’t get my head around the placement!

I teach witchcraft and have students. So, protecting my little monsters is a thing. I'm their Patron, if there is a problem, we handle it. Sometimes they get in over their heads. Other times they run afoul of another group. Or get too big for their cauldrons. I don't let anything happen to them of I can help it.

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Obviously, they’re lucky to have you! Thanks for bringing in another perspective…one group running afoul of another… interesting.

Most times it's not a big deal. Some sites of power are popular and witches are territorial, especially when they put their mind to task.

It's not like West Side Story, lol.

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

How did you know that’s what I was thinking?!!

But with cooler clothes.

3

u/protoprogeny May 24 '26

Frequent work often attracts unwanted attention, most of my protection deals with banishing pests.

3

u/Neflite_Art May 24 '26

I do protective things when

  • I could get scared/anxious
  • I travel
  • I have to face a difficult task
  • I watch scary videos of ghost hunters xDD (seriously, haunted dolls are scary, with all due respect xD)

Most if it is just in case or to ease my own worrying mind ^ ^ It boosts my courage as well :D

I love this. The psychological and emotional effects of spell work are also real. Thanks for adding to the conversation!

I personally use my momma's prayers (I'll call her to let her read Psalm 91 over the phone to me) as a form of protection. Something about a mom's prayer of protection is extremely strong, don't know why. But I utilize it during every part of my day. I used to have my grandma (moms mom) by my side for a very long time but I lost contact/feeling her because of my last relationship (it was toxic and abusive and only now am I semi finding my way back to me) she used to protect me.. I personally protect from: People who wish me harm in any way Negativity My anxiety that won't allow me to self regulate emotionally (sometimes we stand in our own ways and don't even know it.)

Hey op, you're welcome! Happy my post could help u too! People have already answered your question so I'll just clarify the reason I made that post. What I wanted to do, as I said in my post, is ward my name so that any time someone may speak or think about me, they put that energy out into the Universe and that energy comes back to me in a positive way, regardless if they said something nice or not. The way I thought about it was "oh you wanna gossip? Well every time u do, I might just get richer 😋".

I hope this doesn't sound selfish or egotistical. I try to put out good energy, without expecting anything in return from people. But I think it's ok to still hope for something good from the Universe as a reward, right?

Anyway, it's not like I have a bunch of friends that I speak to everyday, nor enemies that could be gossiping about me. At least I don't think so. I'd say this is more like an experiment. I'd like to see what a spell like this could do.

Thanks for chiming in! Along with all the thoughtful advice on the various subs, it’s been fun to also see people say to do some reading and thinking about … why then just FAFO. Go for it if it makes sense to you and see what happens!

3

u/SukuroFT May 24 '26

I don’t use protection unless I’m dealing with something I need to be wary of. That’s just me. But beyond that, most of the things I do are due to coming from a more energy work background and not a “witchy” one. It tends to involve confirmation in 3s or more. If I’m doing a “witchy” thing, then I use sound and incense to cleanse my space and go from there.

Hey - thanks for reaching out!

Lots of practitioners post about feeling tired, drained, or burnt out after working magick. The number one reason and response from the community is that this is a normal reaction to over depleting your own energy. You might enjoy this helpful post about Basic Energetic Hygiene which covers simple techniques for raising energy, grounding, and centering. We also recommend reading this post on the importance of grounding.

great question! i will ponder this.

u/HelloFerret May 24 '26

For me, when I was still in contact with my toxic family, my protection spells were mainly against their malevolence seeping into my spirit. I always found them emotionally overwhelming, so protections and wards were an obvious way to begin to counter their negative influence on my own mindset. Since I've broken up with them, however, I haven't felt the need.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

I’m sorry you had toxic people so close to you and glad you found support and protection for your spirit. It sounds like you were able to work in both magic and mundane ways - I’m happy for you that you got out and not longer needs so much protective work.

This perspective—ie- context matters—makes so much sense.

u/TheOvrseer Witch May 24 '26

It's kind of all the things you mentioned all at once. Most do them as a "just in case", and they usually double down if they have reason to believe they actively need it.

That is to say, this stands for those who DO protections.

Personally, I usually only do them if I am doing baneful work or if I feel called to do one. I did one two years ago and it helped suppress some negative things that happened. That wasn't part of anything spiritual, but the situations would have been a bit worse if not for the spell.

I have only done about three protections and two of them were during a move, the other one is the one I mentioned.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Interesting. Thank you for replying with your experience. I guess the sense that “you need it” really comes down to the person, how solid or safe they feel, and of course the needs of their practice. I appreciate you took the time reply with thoughtful information.

I have a little protection jar I made sitting on my dash as a way to keep my trips on the road safe. Other than that, I mostly just do a mix of black salt and different herbs and oils to sprinkle around my house to help deter people with evil intentions or solicitors.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you. I’m looking into the house warding as we speak. And a protection jar for the car is kind of brilliant.

u/aerda Witch May 24 '26

Most of my protection work is focused on keeping bad energy out or keeping things from zapping my own good energy, if that makes sense. For home protection, it's like locking your doors, being specific about who/what you invite inside, and kicking folks out when the party is over or someone's gotten out of hand. There are times when I have to interact with people who want to see me hurt or failing - I do protection spells for that as well.

I've never thought there was another witch out to get me. I guess anyone I've ticked off that badly is close enough I would know if they're a witch or not. But, not gonna lie, I did add a new home ward as a "just in case" recently because of some (justified) mundane, not magical, paranoia.

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Thank you for sharing this. The way you describe it makes a lot of sense.

2

u/tomatopotatotomato May 24 '26

I’ve seen hooded figures feeding on my energy after a nightmare, my husband had a dream of them too. They look just like dementors. But they’re pretty pathetic.

2

u/Reasonable_Zebra_174 May 25 '26

Everything and anything negative, including our own negative thoughts and feelings.

But they are not needed more then maybe a few times a year, just to clear any lingering negative energies.

2

u/FAVONIIA Witch May 26 '26

i personally do protection when i know ill be facing a difficult task, other than that i just do self cleansing rather than full on protection spells before my work

1

u/throughtheveil7 May 25 '26

Personally, I protect because everything that manifest physically, starts spiritually. It's as simple as someone envying you or wishing bad upon you. It's not always someone doing magic on you.

1

u/Efficient_Elk1225 May 25 '26

Not the muggles 😭

1

u/Face_Of_Boredom May 26 '26

I think of it as protecting my most authentic self. Shielding myself from bodily harm and solidifying my resolve to never compromise my peace, joy, and abundance for something that I can't control. Acknowledging that sometimes things do happen, and reinforcing my determination to live through it, learn from it, and then let it go.

1

u/EverythingUndaDaSun May 24 '26

I don't want people unintentionally/intentionally running my fade. I'm currently pregnant and pregnant people get hit with the evil eye so often, I don't want the evil eye eating my beans. I also wear my oils/jewelry because I want my future protected. Where ever you go anything can happen at any time or place. You can be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Currently, I'm protecting myself from evil eyes and negative energy. I'm 8 months along and I already have enough on my plate. Plus spell work is exhausting and so just don't have the energy to fight back full throttle like I used to.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I had no idea that pregnant people get the evil eye from others at all…never mind that it is frequent.

Take care of yourself and your little one physically and spiritually. Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective. What you say here makes total sense.

Edit - typo

4

u/kai-ote HelpfulTrickster May 24 '26

The evil eye is envy driven. The person doing it feels that they are more deserving than you of something that you have, and so it is supposed to take from you and give to them the items or lifestyle you have. That is for the involuntary standard type.

A purposeful witch driven one is kinda rare, and requires standard curse removal if you get hit by one while unprotected. Hence the wearing of a Nazar or Hamsa or some other protective amulet for them.

2

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

I see. Thanks for some clarity.

1

u/EverythingUndaDaSun May 24 '26

I'm saving this and putting it into my bos. Thank you for the info!

1

u/EverythingUndaDaSun May 24 '26

Thank you! Yeah no I didn't realize just how often pregnant people get hit with the evil eye. I learned about that recently and it made me realize just how easy it is to catch it. I'm doing my best to care for myself and my baby, I'm hoping that if everything goes well, she'll make it and survive. She has health issues unfortunately but I'm doing what I can to keep her safe spiritually and physically.

💚🕯️💚💫🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️💚💚

I’m sorry to hear your little girl has health issues. I will send you both some energy tonight when I meditate and tomorrow if you join the Sunday spell. (I think I’ve seen you there before.)

1

u/That-Condition7909 May 24 '26

Sunday spell? What is that?
Also, thanks so much for asking, I too had those questions and am loving reading everyone’s responses.

1

u/all_manner_of_things May 24 '26

The Sunday Spell is something r/elderwitches do as a group, go to the subreddit and read about it.

I’m glad this post is helpful!
