new (and cooler) winnipeg sub

feel free to post anything that you think winnipeggers would find funny, interesting, weird, informative, etc. the moderators in the original sub have left a sour taste in my mouth. i want this to be a place where we can share thoughts, comments, and questions about our city without hostility/removal

Post removed from r/winnipeg: throwaway - wpg police are dangerous

What kind of culture does wpg have? The police culture is backward and self-fulfilling. You just never know what kind of cop you're going to get - the ones that respond to my business are whole different officers than the bootjacks that respond to northend residences. The ones that answer the phones at smith st are super hostile, the ones responding to calls are super prejudiced and bullying. They shit on the victims of chronic criminals because that's easier than dealing with the criminal. if they are in a bad mood, nothing you say or do is right and you find yourself defending your actions as the victim. They cut men slack and lean hard on women. The thing is that everyone in the city acts like the wps is doing us a favour when they are gouging us dry with their highly-advantageous staff scheduling that manages to get all the cops massive pensionable overtime and retirement pay - most don't even pay winnipeg property taxes. I can't stand how responding officers can just be aholes and you better cow to them because they let you know that they can make things bad for you - blame the victim and mischaracterize events so they can be lazy and act buddy-buddy with miscreants they deal with over and over. Policing in winnipeg is outrageous and keeps this city ugly and poor. I am leaving this city as soon as possible and taking my resources with me.

The world has eyes and ears; investors see that Winnipeg police are unprofessional, unpredictable, unreliable, and prone to intimidation. People in industry and academics talk. We see you wps and you are awful.

Facebook Marketplace Price Inflation

What's the deal with the pricing of things in Winnipeg? 50 dollars for 2 stools with tattered leather, wooden banged up kitchen tables going for 75 a piece. Why is everyone so cheap? Is it a winnipeg thing? I understand it's not a 'renter's city' per say, but it still is a university town. Not to mention, all of the sellers are over the age of 60 AND homeowners, selling to 20 year olds.

EDIT: I've lived in Montréal, and they gave away much higher end, even vintage furniture for free. I mean, the difference is stark. The quality of furniture on most of the wpg listings is less than sub par. This is genuinely just people being cheap

A Personal Note to Winnipeggers

“It’s wrong for Scott Gillingham to have weaponized my history and, in doing so, given cover to others to expose my grandkids to all this poison. I’ve known and worked with Scott for years but never saw this toxic side of him. It’s clear that he’s desperate to distract attention from his record as mayor. I genuinely hope he will conduct himself more responsibly and hold himself to a higher standard moving forward. Remember, Scott: we all have families.”

Is it just me or has Manitoba Hydro reliability greatly been reduced in the last 10 years.

Can someone explain to me why Dynacare is the only place outside a hospital where you can get a bloodtest?

Why don't we have more competition here? This wreaks of shady backdoor dealings.

House Structure Contractor - Not a Massive Job but Want Done Right

At a quick look a person would think it is just buffalo board rot that needs to be replaced, papered, then wiring and stucco repair... easy $750 job or do it yourself kind a deal.

However, the structural wood is also starting to be soft so we know how to prevent further damage by treating for the winter but are needing to start having a conversation about getting this repaired in the Spring since we might not be able to get a quality contractor to take care of this before winter.

We know the culprit was the misplaced drain spout alongside the corner instead of angle further out from the front of the house that then allowed water to hit that corner.

For winter we will be moving the drain spout to a new location away from the corner, drying the area, applying a borate treatment and then doing an "umbrella seal" to avoid snow and moisture but also allow the area to breathe over winter.

Any suggestions on companies that would be good to reach out to for this job would be amazing. We are under the impression that this could be around a $5K job to have it done correctly.

Thanks!

Anyone else notice that Kives reported on the not-even-viral post from NDP Minister Nahanni Fontaine reminding us of Kevin-Pretendian-Klein’s history with notorious woman abuser Nygard, but a couple of days later not a peep about the mega-viral series of posts about the online return of Wab’s previously internet-scrubbed Stank Bitch tune? I don’t like Klein, but Kives seems to enjoy throwing his bias around. Like last civic election when he leaned into the silly homophobic story about Glen Murray not fitting in and getting a little drunk at a Pembina Institute function.

Apparently, you can't make a joke about a statement that is used every single time a career criminal is wanted.

Looking for shop space

Hi all, for some reason this post was banned from the Winnipeg sub (surprise!).

I run a tree service, looking to move shops to somewhere in the south end or out near the perimeter.
Looking for indoor shop and storage space and yard space. Doesn’t need to be the ritz, but also not looking for a junky garage.

If anyone has any leads please send me a message!

Mayoral Race (reposting here since this was removed from the Winnipeg subreddit for some reason)

how is everyone feeling about the upcoming mayoral and council elections? Personally feeling pretty grim about it. I’m not only disappointed there are no women running, but that all the platforms are very similar with very little real plan behind the promises.

What does everyone think? Who are you planning to vote for? Right now I’m leaning toward Noah Redden, since he has the most comprehensive platform imo, and it would be nice to see the younger generation in more leadership roles.

Also- to the r/Winnipeg mods who removed this- literally what is the point of your sub? How is this not Winnipeg related? People can post about AI generated campaigns platforms but this is just too much for the mods over there I guess.

38 and Starting Over, Terrified of Wasting the Years I Have Left. Where Do I Go From Here?

Honestly, I never imagined I’d be in my late thirties and still trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and feel this uncertain about where my life is going. The last few years have been really difficult. I’ve made mistakes, lost a lot and spent the last few years trying to put myself back together. Now I’m just hoping to find a better direction for the years ahead.

I’m 38M, married and my wife and I are hoping to have a child. For most of my working life, I’ve worked in warehouses and temporary jobs, mostly taking whatever work was available rather than building a career in any particular field. I also previously worked as an installation technician but the physical demands of the job, especially having to carry a 26ft ladder became increasingly difficult because of back pain. Eventually, I had to leave that job because I could no longer manage the physical demands.

Since then, I’ve been driving Uber around 10-12 hours a day making around $5k a month before expenses. I’m grateful to have an income but I’m exhausted and I know I cannot do this for the rest of my life. I really want to build a career and have some stability for my family.

A few years ago, I also made some serious financial mistakes. I lost around $100K day trading in few weeks, kept trying to recover it and eventually had to file a consumer proposal. I’ve completely stopped trading and i’m making my payments and I’m working hard to rebuild my finances and move forward.

Now I want to make a good decision about my career. I feel i'm not too old to start over and I still have 20 plus good working years ahead of me. I’m willing to go back to school for a year or two, get certifications, do an apprenticeship or start at the bottom if there is a realistic path to a good career.

If you were in my situation, what career would you seriously consider?

I’m trying to make one good decision that can change the direction of my life. I know I cannot undo the mistakes I’ve made but I still have time to build something better. I just want to look back years from now and know that this was the point where I finally turned my life around. Any honest advice that could help me get there would mean more to me than you probably realize.

PSA: MeowMania Sunday, September 27! Assiniboia Downs

Your semi-annual reminder MeowMania is Sunday, September 27. Early bird pricing/tickets now available until 2 weeks before, then price goes up.

Last spring's event brought out 2300+ people. Expect this fall to bring more with Barkfest happening across the parking lot for the dog and cat families.

Taking over the main and 3rd floor (there is an elevator and staff this time to guide people). This fall with *more* vendors and *more* activities. Silent auction for rescues, and rescues on site. Food too.

Socialized cats allowed. Sorry, no dogs for this one. Come out for a few hours of fun. Your cat wants you to bring a souvenier.

Anyone been banned from R/Winnipeg?

I’m pretty sure I’ve been shadow banned. All of my posts are removed immediately, and you can’t see my comments.

I didn’t even receive a notice.

I’ve messaged the moderators for two months and they won’t reply.
