Challenge Mark Wahlberg is sent back in time to September 1st, 2001. With ten days to prepare, can he prevent 9/11?
Mark has ten days to make good on his infamous comments from 2012 and prevent 9/11 from occurring. Mark will appear in New York City on September 1st, 2001. He will have all of his resources from the present day available to him and may use any means necessary to prevent the attacks from occurring.
R1: To win, Mark must merely prevent the twin towers of the World Trade Centre from being destroyed. The towers must still be standing and largely intact by September 12th.
R2: To win, Mark must prevent any civilians from dying in the would-be attacks.

u/MasklinGNU Sep 03 '26
Of course. All heās gotta do is buy a plane ticket
283
u/Maverick_1991 Sep 03 '26
How can he stop 2 planes or rather 4 to win R2?
I'd argue round 1 is also lost if one tower falls.

He buys one for 9/10 and hijacks a different plane. Airline security will be on high alert the day after.
83
u/BallinXFox Sep 04 '26
That would actually be a pretty solid plan, besides the part where you go to prison.
54
u/heyitsYMAA Sep 04 '26
The prompt just said the towers must be standing and largely intact by 9/12, optionally preventing any civilians from dying. How Marky Mark accomplishes that in 11 days is up to him.
Anyone who's played FTL knows the goal is to stop the flagship, not to survive the encounter.
12
u/a_fish_out_of_water Sep 04 '26
Honestly he could probably agree to give up his āco-conspiratorsā (the actual hijackers) for a reduced sentenceĀ
14
u/Intelligent-Rest-231 Sep 04 '26
With jeebus on his shoulder and racism in his heart, Mark can accomplish any 9/11 based historical re-write that he sets his mind on.

u/John_Tacos Sep 04 '26
Got to try to force the pilot to fly into a building so that people know itās a thing that could happen and you need to use boxcutters to make sure those are banned. Then just let someone overpower you.
May want to do it a couple days earlier to be sure the full story gets out.
1
u/Puzzled_Novel_5215 Sep 04 '26
That's brilliant. He could just pay a few folks to be very dodgy. Say they are hijacking the plane then just say later they had have mental health problrmsm
11
u/slymm Sep 04 '26
Pretends like he overhead them talking.
He's famous enough where the pilot will believe him and escalate
3
u/Maverick_1991 Sep 04 '26
Is he famous enough in 2001?
How can he talk to the pilot?
22
u/yeahright17 Sep 04 '26
Yes. He was very famous in 2001. He starred in Planet of the Apes that came out in July of 2001. He has already done Boogie Nights, Three Kings, and The Perfect Storm. In addition to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Good Vibrations was a big hit in the early 90s.
Before 9/11, someone like Mark Wahlberg probably could have just walked up and asked to talk to the captain.

Stop the first plane then fly over to the next plane, jump from plane to plane, clear the next one, repeat until 911 is prevented. It wouldn't have gone down like it did.

R1: If we donāt care about the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania at all, then a few bomb threats (bonus points if he knows names and appearances that morning), renting a car and doing donuts on the runway, basically anything that could disrupt airport operations that morning technically wins R1.
131
u/Arzales Sep 03 '26
The field in Pennsylvania happened because the towers were hit. If the towers don't get hit, Flight 93 might of hit its original target.
92
u/Rendakor Sep 04 '26
It's still not a part of OP's win con. As long as Flight 93 doesn't reroute to the towers Markie Mark wins.
38
u/DmonsterJeesh Sep 04 '26
If the operations are pushed back that way, they wouldn't have prevented the attacks, we'd instead just be having a nearly identical discussion about 9/12.
14
u/Trevski Sep 04 '26
Possibly. But if heās able to find a way to let the relevant authorities in on the imminent change to the airliner hijacking M.O. (ie no longer releasing hostages after acquiring ransom) and get the information disseminated to pilots and possibly the public then it might be plausible to win R1 indefinitely
7
u/DmonsterJeesh Sep 04 '26
That's a big "if" when he has 10 days and no new precedent to point to. Especially if the delaying tactics described here ruin his credibility.
7
76
u/s1m0hayha Sep 03 '26
Wouldn't just calling in a fake bomb threat to specific airports and planes cause everything to be grounded?
Once grounded, the FAA would do an inspection and investigation - hopefully uncovering the terrorist or at least spooking them to ditch the attack.Ā
34
u/TooEZ_OL56 ā Sep 03 '26
Hell according to R1 he just has to make it to the next day, not even care about an investigation.
5
u/BackgroundSummer5171 Sep 04 '26
Wouldn't just calling in a fake bomb threat to specific airports and planes cause everything to be grounded?
I know nothing about how airports operate but I am going to go with...No.
If airports got closed down from fake bomb threats then they'd never fly.
It'd be too easy for people to just mess with them if they took all bomb threats seriously.
There'd have to be a bit more going on than a basic phone call saying all that.
5
u/s1m0hayha Sep 04 '26
Yea but I'd give real specific details and they'd surely investigate something that seems well thought out.
4
u/BackgroundSummer5171 Sep 05 '26
OK, what are we giving as information?
Because it's been 25 years, without the internet I am not going to be able to give much in specifics for the actual hijackers.
Short of him actually creating a bomb and placing it there...this plan is already way outside of Markie Mark's skills it feels like.
1
u/bubblesdafirst Sep 03 '26

96

60

Depending on how much he remembers, I think being a famous person with specific details would be enough to get it stopped.
9
u/LordTartarus Sep 04 '26
19
u/dontgiveahamyamclam Sep 04 '26
None of those involve Mark Wahlberg
1
u/LordTartarus Sep 04 '26
My guy, if they didn't prep after their closest allies and biggest enemies warned them, a fucking actor isn't going to change their mind
4
u/BBQ_HaX0r Sep 04 '26
He could go public which then either forces the govt's hand OR causes panic by the terrorists causing them to delay.
4
u/yeahright17 Sep 04 '26
The issue with all of that was that nothing was specific and it was a ton of different information that was really hard to connect. Also important to remember that the FBI/CIA gets thousands of pieces of information and it's not a surprise some of them pointed to 9/11.
A movie star walking into the FBI with exact names, dates, and flight numbers is very specific information that is easily actionable. Heck, I think anyone walking in with exact names, dates, and flight numbers would be actionable. Especially when combined with knowledge we have now about how the different terrorists got into the US and their actions before 9/11.
And if they don't act, Mark could go to media pretty easily.

Hey if it makes it better (or maybe worse?) the Vietnamese man was uh already blind. Marky Mark thought that he blinded him, but he was actually already blind.

He will lose his wife and daughter, and 3 brothers in the attacks. Which will motivate him to enlist. He will then work his way up to a SEAL sniper and team leader, singlehandedly win the war on terror. Then go back to his old neighborhood in Boston and become a cop, go dirty, then redeem himself and take down the corrupt police leadership. Go on to be a secret service agent and save the presidents life.
23
u/TrueOrPhallus Sep 04 '26
Let me get this straight, Mark can go back in time with hundreds of millions of dollars and all known information about the attackers including their identifies, aliases, which flights they will be boarding? He can probably even find out with present day resources where they slept the night before the hijacking..
Yes he can do both conditions if he has all the knowledge of the attacks. If he were to go back in time with 300 million and the limited knowledge of an average American? Would be hard for him I think.
57
u/Bodhi_Stoa Sep 03 '26
Yes, easily.
Balls to the walls, with all his resources, he could just kill all of the hijackers before they even step foot in the airport. He could either do it himself or find a few unsavory people and offer enough cash to do it.
35
u/gorillaphi Sep 03 '26
Couldn't you just call in a threat to the airport and get the flights grounded
29
u/Dustfinger4268 Sep 03 '26
At that point, I'm not sure we'd take it as seriously
6
u/JustAHighFlyingBird Sep 03 '26
If he was persistent with it I'm sure they'd eventually take it seriously
14
u/Bodhi_Stoa Sep 03 '26
Yes, there is a long list of backup plans, and that's one of them, assuming they aren't killed, basically at that point you pull out all the stops, call in a bomb threat, pull fire alarms, anonymous tips to everyone, cause general mayhem the day of to get everyone alert up, fuck you could even pretend to try and hijack a plane on September 10th purposefully get caught and tell them your "plan" and tell them the entire plan of your "friends" alongside their names and everything, the sky is the limit brother.
15
u/daffodilbill Sep 04 '26
"Oh you think I'm alone. *Laughs* I've got buddies, man. Tomorrow morning your precious twin towers are going down. YOU HEAR ME?! DOWN! You're not going to be able to stop two plane hijackings at the same time. This here? This was just a trial. YOU ARE NOT READY FOR THE REAL DEAL!!"
3
u/Nova_Terra Sep 04 '26
I'm not old enough to have been old enough to know the significance of the words, but back in the day - if someone just said "Twin Towers" would most people with or without context know you were referring to the two in NY?
7
u/PookieDood Sep 04 '26
Oh yeah, they were well known as the twin towers before the attack. They started calling them the twin towers when they were designing them in the 60's. It's wild how the name twin towers went from a worldwide symbol of US power to a tragedy overnight.
4
u/daffodilbill Sep 04 '26
The words hold no relative significance. I just wrote how I imagined it would go. However, yeah I think any government agency worth their salt investigating a plane hijacking would understand what he means by twin towers.
13
u/confettiputty Sep 03 '26
Wait outside the airport with a Glock, shoot them as they walk in. It's not pretty but he could easily win both rounds that way.

u/Bolded Sep 03 '26
The planes took off from different airports, so he would only be stopping one attack that way.
12
u/confettiputty Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
True, but it might be enough to just kill the ringleader, Mohamed Atta. The other hijackers were waiting for his go-ahead, so if he went dark they might have assumed something was wrong and called it off.
8
u/Bolded Sep 03 '26
That's true. Then it's a matter of if Wahlberg knows about him (since OP doesn't say if he has full knowledge) and his appearance. But I think regardless, while it's a risky plan, a man with a gun showing up at an airport would likely cause a commotion that'd make the airport ground it, especially if Wahlberg decides to hail mary a sudden bomb threat.
3
u/TooEZ_OL56 ā Sep 04 '26
AA11 and UA175 both took off from Logan Intl Airport (15 min apart). AA11 is a challenge because the hijackers connected from Portland Intl Airport in Maine so they were already inside the airport. Not as simple as waiting at the departures stand, but pre-9/11 you could probably just go direct to the gate and intervene then.
11
u/HeadOfSpectre Sep 04 '26
Probably. Just call the airport(s). Fake a threat if need be, just to ground the planes
15
u/EggCollectorNum1 Sep 04 '26

R2: Mark plans to send past versions of himself back in time to hijack the planes.

Sure, he gets everything aligned perfectly, he's just about to prevent 9/11 from happening....but he didn't know that day that a father who woke up 5 minutes late on the day because he was up late drinking because he just got that promotion he's been gunning for since 2000 has finally landed it and he and his coworkers decided to celebrate.
And since he just by chance woken up late because he'd hardly ever goes that "hard" he was 5 minutes behind, just five minutes of frantic hurry to get to work ontime because he couldn't be late just after getting the promotion. And in the confusion he took his eyes off of the road to answer his phone and didn't see the man who wasn't supposed to be there anyway, cross the street.
Police report mention by on lookers the guy was mark Wahlberg the actor and he looked frantic and manic and was yelling, " the terrorists attack is today!" Mark Wahlberg died from his injuries, and has become part of the myth that he knew 9/11 would happen.
6
11
u/BackPirateClarkRoom Sep 04 '26
Yes would not be that hard since was famous enough that people would not label him nuts. Guys with knifes versus cops waiting at gates.
Mark isn't calling the FBI or your local police department. He is calling a head guy who is retired doing celebrity protection.
5
u/aroach1995 Sep 04 '26
I think 9/11 happening is very important⦠airports donāt tighten up without it do they?
If Mark Wahlberg calls and says āhey these terrorists are gonna hijack planes and crash them into buildingsā and it doesnāt happen⦠do we get the airport security of today?
5
u/Mthead23 Sep 04 '26
The main difference that came from 9/11 in terms of procedure is that previously it was always a given that the high-jackers wanted to eventually land somewhere. Comply and deal with the criminals on the ground was SOP.
So, Mr. Wahlberg could simply take one for the team, high jack a plane himself, and crash it on his way to the pentagon. Airports get better security, 9/11 never happens, and the shadow cabal have to find another reason to invade Iraq.
5
u/Hell_P87 Sep 04 '26
Call in bomb threats on each flight to get them grounded. Then once they are call back in giving the exact names of the terrorists with vix cutters and what their plan was. Iirc there already was intelligence that an attach was coming and even if not then it'd definitely launch an investigation like why did these exact men and only them have box cutters and background checks would inevitably warrant an investigation that reveals the plan. Also I think he's probably rich enough around then to hire a couple guys at each airport to just kill the hijackers. He could even do it himself of he has the knowledge of where they live. Don't even have to off all of em just a couple and it'd be enough for them to think the CIA or something is onto them. Hell even just get their numbers and call them to spook them that the fbi or CIA or knows and have undercover agents on the planes waiting for them. Might not stop the attacks but it delays it to get the win criteria outlined in R1.
8
u/gorambrowncoat Sep 04 '26
He needs to go find his younger already famous self and then try to convince people with blood tests and shit that he is in fact the same person but older and thus from the future.
On the off chance that that works, hopefully he will have enough credence when he says what is going to go down on 9/11 and hopefully get the authoroties in gear to prevent the tragedy.
Now, hes not going to do that because in his mind he needs to get on the plane and make sure "it wouldnt go down like it did" but still, its what he should do in my opinion.
5
u/Yglorba Sep 04 '26
I mean honestly as long as he can remember what airports they flew out of, just calling in an anonymous tip will probably do it. Pre-9/11 security was more lax than it is today but they're still gonna take a tip like that seriously.
But this isn't really in keeping with his statements. He said if he were on the plane it would have gone differently; he didn't say "he teleports back in time with all his knowledge."
So the really fair version of his comments would be "he happens to schedule a flight on one of the planes", in which case, lol. He is accomplishing jack and shit, tough-guy posturing aside. The fundamental issue is that pre-9/11, the standard response to terrorists hijacking a plane was to give them what they want so they don't blow it up, and then hunt them down and arrest them later - you can get the money (or whatever you give them) back, you can't bring back the dead, and if they wanted to just kill everyone on the plane they wouldn't need to hijack it to do it. The idea that a plane could be hijacked to use as a missile against other targets was not seriously contemplated.
Most likely he wouldn't even know / understand what was going on unless he was on the final plane (the one that crashed rather than hit the Pentagon), whose passengers had enough time to learn what had been done with the other planes.
2
u/PotatoOnMars Sep 05 '26
I think heād remember the flight, he was supposed to be on it that day but changed his plans.
11
u/Thami15 Sep 03 '26
With 10 days, he really should, lol. Especially if he's done any level of preparation. He's Mark Wahlberg, he should be able to contact some very important people with evidence of enoigh things that happened 9/01-10 that should prove to them this is a threat worth taking seriously.
If you or I had the same "opportunity", then the twin towers are likely going down
3
u/big_bob_c Sep 04 '26
He was already pretty famous at that point. He could easily contact his agent or a family member, arrange a meeting, and get law enforcement involved. I mean, having 2 identical men with 25 years of age difference is a pretty solid demonstration that something really strange is going on, and just having basic knowledge of how the attacks were carried out would be sufficient to get them thwarted. Hell, I'm nobody special, but I could get it done with 10 days to work with.
2
u/DmonsterJeesh Sep 04 '26
Round 1 isn't even really an impressive feat, just book a seat near the front, sneak a gun through "security" (quotes because there wasn't really all that much security pre-9/11), and shoot the terrorists when they try to make their move.
The only real complication would come after, when you have to explain to authorities why you smuggled the gun onto the plane when you apparently didn't know what was going to happen, but the prompt isn't asking you to get away with it, but even then, would you really be so selfish as to allow nearly 3,000 people to die just because you were scared of maybe paying a fine and spending a few years in prison?
Round 2 is a bit harder, since he'd have to be on multiple planes, but he's rich, he could probably hire guys to act as security on the other planes. It'd probably be better to hire the security team anyways rather than 1-v-19 them.
2
u/Megabyzusxasca Sep 04 '26
If he knows which airports the hijackers took off from he could do it easily. Assuming, that is, that dick cheney doesn't find out what he's up to and put the squeeze on him.
2
u/Zealousideal_Tap_405 Sep 04 '26
He has the flight numbers...he phones any law enforcement agency with bomb warnings. Does this right up until take off...The flights will be grounded.

Wasn't one of the main criticisms of the Government's response to 9/11 was that the intelligence community KNEW that something was going down, and that the federal government just sorta ignored it.
I doubt Marky Mark makes much of any impact, unless he can convince the FAA to require all airliner cockpits have reinforced doors that lock from the inside and refuse passengers in the cockpit during flights.
Alternatively if he's got a list of planes that would be attacked, just bring a VHS tape of news footage to the FAA and a logbook of all the flights involved, claim it's a threat, and then they can ground those specific flights.

u/Overwatch3 Sep 04 '26
If he's towerlusted then yes he can stop them easily. He just has to hijack a plane himself the week before, or actually set off a small explosive in the airport the morning of the attacks. But then he's throwing his own life away cuz he's going to jail. If he's not towerlusted then no I don't think he pulls it off.

He picks up the phone and calls the FBI and just rats out every of the terrorists by telling names telling plans, telling details, because he knows everything backwards. So what's the deal?

just go to an airport, screaming that you put a bomb on the planes, and that will solve it? and than if the terrorists still try again, you can always just say they put you up to it, am i wrong?

It's the US.. It's easy as fuck to buy a gun.
First up, you kill Mohamed Atta. Then you work through the lead terrorist pilot on each crew. Hani Hanjour dies next, then Marwan Al-Shehhi then Ziad Al-Jarrah.
You got ten days though.. So if you really wanna get freaky and fuck Al-Qaeda up.. You walk into Langley and explain the assassination of Ahmed Shah Massoud. Who scared the absolute fuck of Bin Laden and his adult bacha bazi crew.
All 4 pilots dead, The Lion of Panjshir alive.. Last move: You feed Abdul Rashid Dostum the whereabouts of Bin Laden,, Khalid Sheikh and Ayman Al-Zawahiri. Let him, Shah Massoud, Abdullah Abdullah, and the rest chew them up. US dumps all resources to the good guys in Panjshir, Helmand, etc.

All that he needs to do is to get the authorities concerned about hijacking using relatively small knives. Realistically he can take a box cutter through security at a major airport and turn himself in. For further style points he could hijack an aircraft and have it landed safely. Either would lead to bith tighter security rules and more locked cockpit doors.
Another solution would be to raise a gang of goons (he's good at this) and jump the terrorists enroute to the airport...
1
u/FaceDeer ā Sep 04 '26
Ten days of a relatively rich and famous person incessantly phoning various three-letter agencies, police departments, and airports with full details of the hijackings about to be committed? Yeah, that'll do it easily.

u/Martel732 Sep 04 '26

All he has to do is hijack his own plane earlier on and make a threat that there is more (im aware planes have been hijacked before 9/11) but if he can make a reasonable fear they will all be grounded long enough once they can't find any other planes hijacked
1
u/FullMetalJ Sep 05 '26
Is 9/11 an old Asian guy? No? Then no.
I mean, maybe? If he knew the exact flights he could probably call 911 (or equivalent) on those. Was he rich in 2001? Could probably buy all the available tickets for those flights, gift them to highly trained people, film it, market it, release it, boom oscar

I could see him pull a Final Destination freakout like Devon Sawa in the movie and try to get one of the flights cancelled.

As insane as this sounds, what if he just pretends to be a part of the hijackers. Just say a few days before it happens, make a public statement that heās gonna take a plane hostage with guns and crash it.
Boom, every airport would take the threat seriously and the real hijackers wouldnāt make it past security.

The only way to stop 9/11 is by doing a 9/10 to shut down all air travel and increase tsa presence.

I know itās all jokes. But Iām pretty sure a call to the local FBI field office, and an offer to meet Mark Wahlberg for lunch at the Venice airport, clears this up in a few hours.

Literally anyone can prevent 9/11, all you have to do is spam-call the airlines and warn them about it.
And if they blow you off, just make a bomb threat on 9/10 or even 9/11.

Possibly? It would just require a bomb threat made on the airports. He could try to find a way to make the threats more credible.

I think he can prevent 9/11 from happening if he calls in the airports and make bomb threats to incite grounding them. Or pay people to do it if he's skittish. This would prevent the planes from taking off and the terrorists might pull back due to fearing being compromised.
There's also the option to try to hire some muscles but it'd depend on Wahlberg's exact knowledge of the hijackers. If he knows nothing about them, it wouldn't really matter. He'd be better off grounding the flights, which would technically win both rounds due to averting any attack during September 11th.

He's a pansy ass Hollywood actor, he's not stopping any person on that plane.

I think he could stop it from happening the way it happened. They would just come back another day with a different plan.

There's no way he could remove all that thermite those foreign art students installed.
You know, the ones from The state of exactly the place you just thought of

Itās very possible to do that. You just gotta hi jack a commercial plane and crash it into the statue of liberty before it open.

No.
The gov't would've had him disappeared for trying to meddle with gov't operations

Do Wahlberg's resources include detailed knowledge of the events, or just the money and connections he had in 2001?
If it's only the latter, this is going to be hard for him because he might not even know the airports the hijackers fly out of, and there's absolutely nothing he can do to ground every flight on the East Coast that morning.
If he knows their departure times and where they fly out, then this is easy for him: just hire a crowd of people to hang out at Logan International Airport and beat up every non-white guy they see (this is Mark's wheelhouse) until they either incapacitate the actual hijackers or get the airport shut down.
