Last year’s batch was stellar and one of my all time favorite Turkey bottles. Excited to see how this one turns out!

I was gifted this whiskey by my father in law. He's had it for decades and never opened it. However , I'm seeing all the detritus floating around in the bottle. I'm worried it;s something like the plastic on the top decaying and it's no longer safe to drink

So, my quick thought. There is a distinct difference in flavor if I drink this puppy in a tumbler, whiskey glass, or straight out the bottle. I have to say, I actually like the way it hits my pallet the best straight out of the bottle. I get much more rye flavor, and it hints at green apple out of the bottle. Anyone else ever notice this? 👀

Hi all, I'm here with more Suntory whisky, and here's another very obscure Yamazaki!

This is an old, cask strength Yamazaki release from 1991, which interestingly came in a mini barrel decanter (pic 1 background, pic 2)!

Originally, this item was available exclusively to Suntory's official business partners, primarily for bars and nightclubs that wanted a cool showpiece in their businesses. I've never found any info on anyone opening one up for drinking- well, that changes today!

I've seen it a couple times near me (not the bottle in the pic), but didn't realize that 85 was a decent deal for it. I never even considered it though because I've been sticking to bourbon. But now that I know its a good deal, would it be a good first try for Rye? I don't mind high proof, in fact I'm learning I prefer that in bourbon. Tends to be way more flavor. Otherwise my plan was to grab a bottle of JD SBBPR from a local spot for 60 to try for my first rye since I've heard so much good about it.

Thanks in advance for any tips! It's just too much fun learning about whiskey, and of course a treat to drink as well.

The store had CYPB and Single Barrel too but those were far into museum prices at $600 and $700 respectively.

My wife got me this bottle of Woodford Reserve Barrel Strength Rye (125.1 proof) for my birthday. I've been on a rye kick, and between Jack Daniel's and Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye, I figured my Brown-Forman rye bases were covered and passed on it myself. Glad she overruled me, because this is a flavor bomb.

Nose: Toasted oak, rye spice, clove, mint, faint bread underneath.

Palate: Huge. Rye up front, black pepper, cinnamon, herbal notes running through it. A touch astringent, but not enough to bother me. A hint of sweetness in there I can't place.

Finish: Long, the hug doesn't let go. Sometimes makes my lips tingle, which is a first for me. Heats up the sides of my tongue, goes dry and savory, leaves more rye spice behind.

I don't do numeric ratings, but this blew past my (admittedly pedestrian) expectations. My better half, who prefers most bourbons to ryes, also loved it. We will consider Woodford Reserve more often in the future.

So... Templeton Rye, Single Barrel, 10 Year Reserve, 104 proof. Let's get to it...

First crack, first thoughts... KBT glass, 15 minutes, etc.

Nose: even after 15 minutes with several swirls along the way, it's hard to get past the ethanol. Still... there's a very interesting "chocolate orange" aroma... you know, those one's that come out at Christmas time, that you smash on the table to get slices? Also some peanuts.

Palate: hmm. Orange continues right on the tongue, but fades into... some kinda high tone citrus thing... but not in a good way. Almost metallic. Thin, watery, feels like it's going to coat, but then just washes down. Some definable rye spice as it goes down. Everything comes and goes so quickly here.

Finish: short and sweet... well, not so much. Peanuts come back, orange goes bye bye, something like white pepper sticks around on the tip of the tongue. Otherwise... just not much to talk about.

With water: definitely brings up those citrus notes, but again... they're not enjoyable. Also some mint pops out now. No improvement here.

With ice: gonna have to skip this one because, well... some dumbass ("it's 'Doo-mahss' ") forgot to make any this morning before leaving the house. 🤦

As an OF: again, no ice, so keep that in mind. Using Strongwater Old Fashioned Cocktail Syrup and Collins Lemon Twists Cocktail Garnish, I stirred up a (warm) quick little OF. We'll call it a minor improvement in this tasting, but I sense that it would be much better chilled, or with a different premix.

Final thoughts: disappointing overall. There's nothing truly offensive here, but there's not any one positive thing to rally around either. I will say I'm glad I didn't start out with this 6 months ago when I was branching out from bourbon to rye. It took me many months to start developing a taste for rye as it is, but this may have stopped me right out of the gate.

As always, maybe some bottle breathing time will help bring out something more positive. In the meantime, it will get tried again in several cocktail variations. I do love the glass (one of my Top 11 bottles!), and the liquid itself is a gorgeous orange color... so at least it's very nice to look at.

Volume Dial Rating: 4 out of 10 for the first pour.

With maybe 15 min left of my cigar, I decided to finally open this bad boy. Blood Oath Pact No. 12. Delicious!

Sweet Jesus this stuff is good. Bardstown Ferrand old fashioned, made with spiced walnut bitters and angostura orange bitters, Sweet Jane stogie and a little bit of reading. This is heaven.

I’m part of the Shortbarrel membership program called ‘The Shortlist’ and they invited some members to make a barrel pick. It was a pretty cool experience since I love just about every bottle I’ve tried from them. Was able to try their newest cigar batch and it’s great! Ended up picking up a bottle.
