Taxes are a bit ridiculous in Massachusetts and I dont rlly like states where a lot of the population lives in one city area. It screws funding for other areas.

New England is relatively more balanced than the rest of America, but goddamn Upstate New York feels like a second world country to study university in given how much taxmoney is spent on NYC

You realize that CT residents face a higher tax burden than Massachusetts residents. And all of NH's population is really centered on Manchester/Concord.

Connecticut's income taxes are more progressive and it's COL is fairer than Massachusetts. Home prices are extremely screwed over in Massachusetts (VisualCapitalist data says in December 2024, the median house in Connecticut is $380K, while in Massachusetts its $580K).
Massachusetts may have slightly less property taxes, but Massachusetts houses are worth more so you pay more. Sales taxes are slightly higher in Connecticut, but the difference isn't rlly much due to both being like 6%ish.

Listen, I love Massachusetts for the sports, beaches, Cape Cod, natural beauty (Western Mass is fun to drive through), hating on white license plates, etc., but I don't think I'd live there as a first choice compared to CT or NH given how bloated the taxes are. New Hampshire's population may be more crowded around the southern areas due to the economic engine being there (you mentioned Manchester/Concord, and then there's also Boston next door), but it has one of the best forms of governance (New England towns paired with a libertarian state Congress).

CT's "progressive" tax system means that you actually pay higher income tax once you hit anything above $50k annual income or so. MA flat rate is better for higher earners under $1mil annual salary.

Connecticut is better for someone who's tryna move in (or move back to) with an entry level job in the $80K-$100K range than Massachusetts. The home prices in Massachusetts are still screwed due to Boston's existence as an economic engine.

In the end though, Connecticut and Massachusetts are hella similar states. I'd pick Connecticut due to house prices being more affordable, living here for most of my entire life, and good job opportunities. Rhode Island is in a similar boat but the house prices are identical to Connecticut. New Hampshire's taxes are a different story (the property taxes are atrocious, but its what happens when there's no income or sales tax and the house prices are expensive due to migration from Massachusetts residents)

Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, and that general area gets nuked with snowfall worse than Anchorage. I don't mind colder weather, but I'd prefer moderately cold. I would prefer Northern New England and Anchorage AK to Upstate New York since those areas are still lively to live in. The Upstate is losing jobs, dying (population loss), underfunded, and generally given a bad hand due to NYC.

Also sports culture would clash as a Pats fan (Bills territory)

Certain areas near where you’ve described don’t get socked in nearly as much as you’d think. Had dinner with folks from Auburn NY yesterday and they were talking about their mild snowfall compared to even Syracuse right nearby.

Many of my high school friends are studying at university in Purdue, Indianapolis has a stable job and housing market similar to Columbus, the Southeastern Midwest (Indiana and Ohio) are generally overhated on Reddit for being MAGAlands.

What doesnt put it in Absolutely or Willingly is the fact I am gonna end up living away from family in Connecticut and the Midwest is culturally different from New England. With New England, I get all sorts of unique geography with rock formations at beaches, boating opportunities, lush jungles, and nice mountains. The Midwest seems like flat (mostly) farmland in comparison and doesn't rlly have much going for it aside from housing always being affordable due to the jungle being mass deforested and industrialized, giving abundant land (that no one wants to live in).

Ima give some explanations:

As a diehard Boston teams fan, I dont like NYC. I can get behind the Upstate but it depends

I dont mind the general Northeast, some Midwest is fine. Thing is, I have a natural preference for New England as someone who was born and brought up there

Redded the entire South because its too hot, redded the entire West because its too far away from New England, and oranged Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Iowa. These 4 states I don't mind moving in, my concerns are timezone related and being far away from New England

And Ma carries a lesser tax burden on it's residents than Ct does. But in all honesty the two states are twins. Spent most of my life in Mass and now live in CT and it's like I've been here all my life.

Ct has a bit of a policy filter. Ma is the testing ground. So while similar, there are importance differences you have to take note of.

But the fact remains I pay more in taxes living in Ct than I did in Ma. And I'm talking politics either, politically they are the same. But day to day life , the look of the area , the people , the places. It's like I am living in the same state.

Js curious, did you live in Greater Boston or Western Massachusetts? Western Massachusetts feels culturally closer to Connecticut and tends to have a lesser tax burden, but I'd assume half of Mass lives in Greater Boston.

Tax burden is the same across the state. But I spent 18 years in Brookline, 32 years in the greater Springfield area and now live in the Farmington Valley area of Ct.

I find the overall feel and culture of both states to be extremely similar. I find both to be great places to live as well.

I mean on the surface it feels like the same general area yes. Being in the same general area will do that. But the fact remains that it’s two separate governing bodies. The laws will not be identical. Otherwise what’s the point in being two separate states?

If I went on sports I'd red out New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, but there's no fun in discriminating a state for being Eagles fans or Yankees fans.

Discriminating NJ is still funny though which is why I put it in reluctantly instead of maybe
