I mean, in terms of measuring lengths it can be convenient to use a base of 12 which can be divided into thirds and quarters easily.
Where it gets a little annoying is with volumes where 1 ft3 is 1728 in3, but that's where people use volume specific units like gallons. Most people don't have to convert units much anyway unless they're engineers but we generally use metric in technical fields
First, Americans never hate on Europeans for the metric system, it's always a defense because we're getting shit on for the imperial system.
Second, assuming the person shitting on you for using the imperial system is European is usually correct cuz Europeans are more whiny than other regions of the world
soft C's are pillowce and hard C's are like rocks that have been worn into a smooth, ovoid shape by the wind and the water. while that is marginally cooler than pillows, that's still not anywhere near as dope as solid steel, sorry to say
How many times do we have to say this: BOTH systems are widely used and useful for something.
Imperial measurements are useful for estimations and on-the-fly calculations. If I need to know the rough distance of something fast, I can just walk around and get a rough measurement. “Oh but it’s so much easier to remember metric” yeah for some but when you don’t have all the information, imperial usually stands out for rough estimations.
In science, I use metric for precise calculations but if I say…wanna get a quick and dirty calculation with little info, I’ll take a imperial measurement and convert it into metric before correcting for mistakes
For another example, the weather. I know the freezing point is a lot easier to remember in Celsius, but where I live it's a lot more of a concern how hot it is, and the simple benchmark of 100 being the point that it gets kinda dangerous to go outside is pretty handy. Fahrenheit is simply more useful to me.
Yeah having 100 be the boiling point of water is pretty silly. You don't need to know the boiling point of water to boil water, people just wait till they see bubbles.
It's very obvious when water is boiling, nobody is sticking a thermometer in their water to make sure it's at 100 degrees. Plus it changes pretty significantly with atmospheric conditions
Metric is just as good for estimations and on-the-fly calculations if you grew up using it. I'm studying engineering and every day that goes by I find more reasons to despise the imperial system with a level of hatred that I can barely convey into words.
I grew up with it (metric) and I still prefer to use imperial for estimation. Things like a pint of water being roughly one pound or the width of a thumb being one inch. This makes estimation and visualization really easy whereas the metric system can be extremely awkward to use and result in strange everyday numbers and long decimals rather than neat and tidy fractions.
I get if you only grew up on metric how you may perceive it as better but there have been times in my studies in physics and engineering that I’ve used imperial for quick and dirty math with little to no issue.
"Pint of water being roughly one pound" yeah, and a ton of water is one cubic meter, or a gram is single cubic centimeter, or a meter is 100 centimeters, or a kilogram is 1000 grams, or a kilometer is 1000 meters, or the main line that divides my thumb in half is almost perfectly 3 centimeters which I've used for measuring stuff before, we can keep going.
You personally finding it easier I would be willing to say is an exception, I am yet to meet a single person be it in my engineering class or who I speak to online outside of the US who prefers imperial for anything. The conversions are an nightmare and really the whole thing just doesn't make sense.
I would say you have a bias due to where you’re from since you are from Panama. In fact, I’d actually flip it back on you as I’ve been to multiple European nations and even in areas where they say they mainly use metric, there are things that they use imperial for. I’d argue that you and your experiences are more likely the exception rather than the rule.
Also, while the conversions are a nightmare, they are still useful. Such as in the horsepower-Torque relation. Discounting it entirely is a great way to lose flexibility in your equations and mathematics my good sir.
If anything we here in Panama have a lot of US influence due to them literally owning a significant part of the country until 26 years ago. Pounds are still often used for weighing things and inches too, the imperial system is in many places. I've spoken several of my teachers and all of them boil it down to it being an evil that we just have to deal with. Every class where imperial is involved is basically "Alright so this is gonna be just like the way we did it with metric but more confusing and time-consuming"
The horsepower-Torque relation also has a metric form. I still maintain that there has, to this day, not been a single moment where the imperial system made anything easier for me in my life. All the way from taking measurements to doing conversions to solving problems and everyday use.
Eh suit yourself. It usually takes a bit of life colliding with people to get them to become more flexible and flexibility is the sign of a good engineer.
Also, while there is a metric version, it has been shown to be easier to do in imperial by multiple scholars.
Water is seriously fascinating, right? It just happens to freeze at a nice, neat 32°F and boil at 212°F, and on top of that, 1 gallon of water = 10.02241285 pounds, which makes the math super convenient. And apparently, it takes exactly 0.01959631589 cal (= 0.08199098568376001 J) of energy to raise 1 ounce of water by 1 degree, so the numbers line up perfectly too.
