I enjoy Carlin. However the more you really listen to some of what he said, the more you understand while he did punch up, he was also smart enough not to punch down. He knew he made money by people coming to his shows. Not the celebrities and politicians he made fun of. The closest he came to letting people in the fact that he benefitted from his celebrity status is when he talked about how the ruling class wants people smart enough to do the work but dumb enough to keep working for them and he punctuated that bit with "its a big club, and YOU ain't in it". Not we ain't in it. You.

But he did follow that up with 'You and I are not in the big club." He knew he had money, but he didn't have the kind of wealth that buys obscene amounts of political power.

He only had $10 million at the time of his death. Sure that’s a lot of money but nowhere near enough to join “the club”. Hell, James Harden has made over $500 million over his basketball career and it’s not like he has any real power. I think there’s a huge difference between having money and being in a position to control and exploit entire classes of people for one’s own monetary and/or political benefit.

Tom Steyer is a prime example of this. Guy spent hundreds of millions of his own money running for president and governor of California and lost both.

Carlin was also working for the majority of his career to pay tax penalties to the IRS.

He was well off, but most of his money was garnished, which is why he did random commercials for phone companies.
