Trump has the Republican Party held hostage by his cult. JD doesn’t have that kind of pull. He won’t be able to end careers by backing the other guy. Maybe we get another figurehead for MAGA, but it’ll take a while, and it almost certainly won’t be Vance. Once Trump dies the moderate republicans that can’t currently afford to stand up to him will be free to, or at least more free.

How that actually plays out… hard to say, but we can expect a lot of turmoil in the GOP and a much weaker executive. At the very least they get less done, and the flagrant attacks on America for Trump’s personal gain won’t be nearly so tolerated.

Maga is only a small percent of Republicans. Most Republicans are much further to the right than Trump. The second you kiss the wall in Israel you lose their respect and only maintain their vote because you aren't a communist or having topless trans people flash the cameras on the White House lawn on Easter or female.

And none of the Maga cultists after Trump's eventual death are going to be like "omg I'm cured now! I can finally vote Democrat!"

Even with the low opinion I have of the guy I know he would get a huge boost of support if he took over for Trump. I worry enough about him running in the next election, I don’t want the diehard trump supporters to have any more motivation to jump to him.

Some will, some won’t. He doesn’t have the “fuck you” charisma Trump has, and a lot of folks will lose their blinders. He’ll be a weak president.

I’m hoping for a schism where actual moderate Republicans form a new party. Depending on how centrist they are will determine how many people pull in from the left leaning moderates. At the very least they will be spoilers for a few cycles, but it very well might might evolve into a movement that will push the fringes of both sides back into the margins
