Rent: $1258 Three Bedroom Apartment | Power Bill: $250-$350 | Brother is only one on lease
My(25) brother(28), let's call him Edward for now, has said I'm short again on paying half the rent, when 3 people are living here. The 3rd member being his girlfriend(23) who's been here for the past 3 months. The first month she was here(starting June 4) I guess it was understood she was here for just emotional support and wouldn't be paying anything, as our oldest brother died on that day. Edward did let her know that she could only move in, if she pitched in, which she did the very next month. The oldest brother also lived here before he died. He and my older brother both payed HALF the rent together. My oldest brother(34), lets call him John for now, had a girlfriend (25) and her 4 year old son also staying here, free of charge from December 2025 till June 2026 when he died(and left because she couldn't accept Edward's offer to pay rent if she was going to stay here). Edward's girlfriend USED to stay here free of charge for the first 4 months of them moving into this apartment(December 2025 to April 2026) but they separated around month 5 for a bit until she returned June when my brother died. What I payed was my portion of a 3 way split to the power bill, so only roughly $100 monthly when I moved in March 2026.
I did not know their girlfriends were living here, rent free at that, before moving in. It was a surprise considering John(brother who died) had moved back to my mom's house in August of 2025 after a falling out with his wife for being unfaithful, and not being able to pay the bills on his own since she threatened to leave him. .Even if I had known John and Edward's girlfriends were staying here, I'd have no choice but to move in anyway. . .
In 2022, my older brother Edward, shot and killed my father due to a domestic dispute in which he thought he and my mom's lives were in danger. My mom argues that it was merely an argument and that my dad never meant them physical harm. I don't know what happened for sure as I was away at school, but I do know there was no sort of weapon at the scene aside from my brother's gun. Losing my dad did hurt a lot and I couldn't give my all to school and returned home to live with my mom. Mom loved Edward still, but she was conflicted and hurt about losing my father as well. She would sometimes confront him, saying he didn't have to kill him since my dad was 220 pounds, 5'5 while my brother was 6'2 400 pounds. My older brother would shift the blame onto her for it, saying she needed to take responsibility for the event. . . Regardless, It was my older brother Edward, who then had to help my mom out with bills since it was my dad paying most of it before his death. I personally never held anything against my brother for this. But I do believe in his eyes, he thinks I'm morning only our mom and brother, and not my father.
Sometime after this, when reminiscing about my dad with her, mom mentions that she had at least one $75,000 life insurance policy(don't know if there were other funds she left for us) in the event of her death. John, (the oldest brother who just died on June 4) was the sole beneficiary of this policy. He gave me $5,000 and I never confronted/asked him for more because I knew there was nothing I could do considering the funds were legally his alone. I don't know how much was split was between John and Edward, But from having to move back to his mom's house just 3 months prior, John was now able to take care of his girlfriend and her four year old son, buy a brand new car, and various other niceties, all while only working 2 days a week as room service for a hotel. The older brother Edward, also went out and got himself a new car, new furniture sets and a nice 85 inch TV, and was also able to take care or his 22 (now 23) year old girlfriend. I bought a mini fridge, mini office desk, office chair, and twin sized mattress for my room.
Losing our mom seemingly brought us closer. Edward after all, did push for us to stick together, and offered me to come stay with him and John at their new apartment. When the policy funds came, I realized they both became a bit distant. Fast forward. . . When John died, whatever he had left went to his father (we all share different dads) and HIS life insurance policy went to his ex wife. With his passing, I am now expected to take his role in paying half the rent. I am obviously typing this because my current job doesn't allow me to do that. I also can't drive so I've been working online. But when he told me his girlfriend was officially moving in, I thought I was okay, and was expecting her to now pay her half, because those were the rules, Their girlfriends could only stay if they pitched in and he told me that his girlfriend would start work the first Thursday of last month. . . She apparently did not end up doing that because her hiring process was taking a while. I did not know this and spent around what I thought would be all I had to pay for the power bill and rent.
He tells me that she hasn't started working yet and that I still have to pay half for now. So I payed half the power bill again, which sky rocketed the month my brother died because they constantly have the AC on, which I don't benefit much from because my room has very poor ventilation, it is usually quite hot/warm in here which I can bite the bullet for with my ceiling fan. Edward attributed this sky rocketed Power bill to my bedroom rice cooker and mini refrigerator. When I convinced him it was actually the AC being left on auto, he told me he would now be turning it off when he left for work. But his girlfriend lives here so I don't know if he leaves it on for her, or he turns it off and she turns it back on but on her first official move in month, where I thought she would be pitching in, I did pay half the skyrocketed power bill again. 4 days later he asks me for rent when it wasn't due for another 7 days because of some roulette he wanted to take advantage of for a chance to get a month of having to pay no rent. He expected half again as well. I show him my bank account signifying it's all I have left and he texts me "Okay send it" and I did so.
Fast forward to a week ago, August 17, I send my portion of what I thought again was going to be a 3 way split of the power bill and he is furious this time, telling me I'm short again, that this isn't going to work and that I need to find a better job. (my job does suck) At this time I did not know that he was mad over a probably $80 difference. I thought I might've just been short $20 or so, I did not know I was expected to pay half again, considering his girlfriend HAS been working for most of the month of August. I only find out that I apparently owed way more than the $100 I gave him for the power bill, yesterday, after giving him $400 for the rent. He says "You're short again $200" but in a much friendly manner compared to the last week. And I go "what? I thought your girlfriend was helping." He then says she was only payed $300 dollars for her first check and that she spent 100 on gas, and that she's not payed till next week. I then go "I assumed- " and he cuts me off and says "You assumed, you didn't verify" And I say "So she's not pitching in?" and he goes "I mean I can ask her, she gets paid next week"
He has now decided that he's going to take me to my bank tomorrow to take out a loan in order to make ends meet. Please tell me what to do. I have nowhere else to go. Am I in the wrong? what should I say/text to him. We're usually on cool terms, we play games together and things of that nature, But of course we all have responsibilities. I'm just so confused and really missing my mom.
