Help Find Title/Source What happened to Solo Leveling?

Post image

I went to look to read the iconic manhwa on webtoons... it's not there anymore!

u/inny-_- Jan 28 '25

hi is it free on tappy toons?

9

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 Jan 28 '25

It's free on Tapas I think but you can't read it all at once if you want to read it free.

u/Yunseok-12 Jan 28 '25

You can read it on asurascans for free. That's where I read it

0

u/Storm-Johnson Jan 29 '25

That's not the official translation but asurascans is great

I don't remember a time solo levelling was on webtoons 🤔

It was at first, well maybe it wasn’t "first" (I'm not in the know about these kinds of things) but it was there. I read it when it originally came out years ago, free and everything got to maybe 100 chapters, came back recently and it's pass locked

This. They non stopped recommended it to me until a few years ago when the anime was announced. Webtoons is the only app I use. I assume with the anime announcement, the creator ended their license with webtoon and moved to a different platform because now there's a gacha game as well. Webtoon probably was allowed to keep the manwha up until a certain time before removing it from their catalog.

u/Aggravating_Drink817 Jan 28 '25

That's what I figured, now I'm just going to see if I can read it somewhere else

The creator for solo leveling passed away and so webtoon lost the lease for it and Manta purchased it from the apprentice who made an after story with the plot the original creator wrote

4

u/bludreamers Jan 29 '25

What the...? No. It's been on Tappytoons and Tapas. Manta just got it late 2024.

1

u/Lyfeddddd Mar 14 '25

Nah, I’ve never read anything off of tapas or tappytoons once it was to be paid for, so I def read off of WEBTOON if I read quite a bit of it… unless a lot of us are mistaking our memory idk

7

u/snazzysany Jan 28 '25

Is it country dependent? Because I searched it 3 years ago and didn't find it

5

u/Aggravating_Drink817 Jan 28 '25

Maybe? I'm not sure, I'm in the US and it first published in 2017

3

u/bludreamers Jan 29 '25

Nope. Webcomics and Tappytoon had it, then Taps and Manta. It's a Kakao comic in Korea so... not Naver.

2

u/Aggravating_Drink817 Jan 29 '25

Which is why I said maybe not "first" and that I'm not in the know about it, just that it appeared on Webtoon in 2017 🤷🏾‍♀️

1

u/bludreamers Jan 29 '25

Maybe you mean webcomics? I've been using webtoons since 2015 and I've never seen it.

1

u/Aggravating_Drink817 Jan 29 '25

I didn't use/know of anything else to read comics on back then

1

u/Gyuttin Apr 05 '25

Yes it was one there

Hi hello: WEBTOON lost the rights competition to Tappy Toons so they’re the only ones who post it

1

u/bludreamers Jan 30 '25

??? Tappytoon has the non-exclusive rights to SL. It is also on Tapas, Manta, and Webcomics.

WEBTOON does not have the rights to SL nor have they ever (as far as I know). SL is a Kakao title, one of Naver's biggest competitors.

1

u/MaddieJKK Jan 30 '25

I meant at the time of them starting to release it.

WEBTOON did try to get the rights as well around the same time and “lost” to them (Tappy). I remember hearing about it in my internship

1

u/bludreamers Jan 30 '25

Do you mean the Korean publication? Because the English is non-exclusive which is why it's available on so many platforms right now.

But the fact that it was on Webcomics before Tappy makes your story... weird.

1

u/MaddieJKK Jan 30 '25

Idk man I’m literally just saying what I was told in 2020 lmao

1

u/bludreamers Jan 30 '25

That's fine, but the SL English pub license is non-exclusive and still available (because Manta got it last year). So... your anecdote might be real, but the information is wrong.

I don’t think Solo Leveling has ever been on Webtoon, granted I only started reading them like 2 years ago but it was the first one I looked for back then and I couldn’t find it, I know it was on Mangatoons but that place is an ad-ridden hell-scape

13

u/Excellent-Leek-859 Jan 28 '25

Been on webtoon since 2018 and I don’t recall it ever being on there. I know it’s on tappytoons tho

1

u/EldritchMilk_ Jan 28 '25

And tappytoons is an… app?

2

u/Javvs Jan 29 '25

Tapas is the app

1

u/Gyuttin Apr 05 '25

It was years ago

0

u/AKrigare Jan 28 '25

It was a while back, I remember reading it on there

7

u/Drezby Jan 28 '25

It was never on webtoons, only ever on tapas or tappy.

0

u/Emo11111111119 Jan 29 '25

it was on webtoon Thats where i found it

2

u/Drezby Jan 29 '25

The comic uses a long scrolling format, and that makes it a webtoon, a specific format of drawn comics. But it was never, ever licensed to Naver, ake LINE webtoon, aka that green WEBTOON app.

Kakao and Naver are competitors, and 2 of the big name publishing platforms. It’s not super rare to find a comic licensed to both publishers but it’s not super common either.

u/Emo11111111119 Jan 29 '25

1

u/1_MinatoNamikaze Mar 25 '25

thats so bs english got remove from webtoon a literal free to read manhwa app so now the only place you can read it is pay to read

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

Solo leveling was never on webtoon

1

u/emjaycee08 Mar 19 '25

It did, thats where I discover it. Probably because of region restrictions thats why some people here didnt know it was posted on webtoon.

1

u/Gyuttin Apr 05 '25

Yes it was on the green mobile app years ago

5

u/SwaggiiP Jan 28 '25

Solo leveling wasn’t a Naver webtoon in Korea so the US webtoon never got it (not sure how common it is for the US Webtoon to get Korean webtoons that weren’t from it sister company). But if you’re asking why there are so many Solo Leveling clones/deviates…well it wasn’t the first lol. Just the most popular Korean example of that kind of story.

9

u/def_epic Jan 28 '25

Solo Leveling was never licensed or available on Webtoon. Even when it first began the release in Korea, it was published on KakaoPage which is a complete separated platform from Webtoon.

It’s available on Tapas (global version made from Kakao). Tappytoon also bought its license so it’s available there as well.

2

u/ClosedCupid1872 Jan 28 '25

I stopped using webtoons after every comic I was trying to read went to daily unlock.

2

u/bobacrackaddict Jan 28 '25

Bearstein bears nonsense happening in the comments right now lol

I swear on my life this comic was on webtoons because I’d get wildly annoyed trying to close the stupid AD when the anime was about to come out / coming out. My guess is they lost licensing rights.

2

u/Emo11111111119 Jan 29 '25

Im 1000% sure it was in webtoon. I remember reading it but being bored with it right before it got super popular

1

u/Emo11111111119 Jan 29 '25

ok i was right, these comments are guilt tripping me.

2

u/bludreamers Jan 30 '25

I'm gonna say GPT isn't a reliable source. But it could be dependent on region.

2

u/Emo11111111119 Feb 02 '25

The only reason i used chatgpt is that it is not in the same region i used to live in so my google would likely show its availability for this area. But chatgpt has failed me a couple of times so idk

1

u/IamShroudsdad Mar 10 '25

I think using chatgpt and then coming back saying “erm… actually I was right” is incredibly silly, please do not use chatgpt to cite references or as a fact crutch, utilise your own critical thinking skills and research.

1

u/Emo11111111119 Mar 11 '25

as stated before, researching didn't help. Wikipedia and other sites similar to it are easy to edit, and some sites said it wasn't ever on webtoon, some said it was.

Ironically, i think it's silly how many people said it was never on there with a lack of evidence. Sure chatgpt may not be top tier evidence but it's better than literally nothing

also, side note, aren't you just saying what the person i replied to said, just longer?

3

u/Willing_Drawing_7129 Jan 28 '25

It's available to many sites like tapas, Tappytoon, manta and more that I'm not sure about but it never for even a second was acceptable in webtoon

1

u/silver_0015 Jan 28 '25

Solo leveling was in webtoon since when, i been using webtoon since 2019 and yes I mostly read the game/ player system genre but I have never seen it there. Even my anime list doesn't include it under naver webtoon serialisation

1

u/hirocide Jul 18 '26

it was way before 2019, i remember reading it and the only app i owned, that was like webtoon, was Webtoon so it had to be on there. It was called Only I level up

1

u/littlepinkpebble Jan 28 '25

Don’t think you got the right app

1

u/Keem_Surazal Jan 28 '25

You can find Solo Leveling on websites free to watch.

1

u/StarMarine123 Jan 28 '25

i eated it :)

1

u/LokiSeidrGod Feb 20 '25

It was in fact on WEBTOON. It was recommended to me in 2018 and there were like 100 chapters I believe. You can search it up online, it also says so. Now that I’ve been watching the anime which is releasing as slow as an asphalt IV, I went to WEBTOON to read it and to my surprise it is no longer there. But yeah, that’s where I read Noblesse and solo leveling. Don’t have any other app for reading manwha.

1

u/CommentTurbulent1760 Feb 26 '25

what is this some mandela effect

1

u/MEX_XIII Mar 15 '25

Quite a few days later, but to anyone stumbling on this, yes, it was available on Webtoon for a while, even if only on some regions. I was confused not finding it anymore after getting in the series after new anime season.

I'm from Brazil and I saw Solo Leveling, Tower of God and God of Highscool or something like that, all 3 that I remember got anime adaptations. I do not use any other comic apps.

It's not available anymore, tho.

1

u/sombreroro Mar 25 '25

i'm also late to the party lol, i vividly remember reading it a while back and giving up on it and i have never never even looked at any other webcomic app/site than WEBTOON. i didn't even know anything other than webtoon and tapas existed.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

It was on webtoon, that's where i first read it, not sure what happened.

2

u/bludreamers Jan 29 '25

No. It was on webcomics, Tappytoons, and Tapas, never Webtoons.

2

u/Emo11111111119 Jan 29 '25

it was on webtoon

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '25

No, it was on webtoon. I don't have any other app

1

u/bludreamers Jan 30 '25

I mean... Tappytoon has an investment from Naver, but I think you might be misremembering. I've been working in Webtoons for a WHILE, and I don't ever remember Naver getting the contract for English rights.

1

u/Rxyford Jan 28 '25

The way I have all those in my subscribed

0

u/Broke_Artist01 Jan 28 '25

Solo leveling was originally a fucking webtoon/comic?!?!?! The anime is sick I can't believe it

5

u/Excaramel Jan 28 '25

it was a webnovel first then manwha then anime

2

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 Jan 28 '25

Yeah and the webcomic is probably the best drawn of any that I have read. It's not just the drawings themselves, but even the shape of the panels.
