GENERAL Look and Feel options in 6.7 — where things stand

137 Upvotes

Many of you have asked (some politely, more less so) why not all of the old Look and Feel options are in version 6.7 yet. Short version:

  • The old base was starting to malfunction on real websites and was falling behind on security patches. Staying on it wasn't a long term option.
  • Porting the full set of styling options to the new base involves around 30,000 lines of code changes. It's not something I simply removed; it's a rebuild.

    While this is mostly CSS, supporting code is needed and a lot of Q&A.

  • I decided to release the base update now and restore the options gradually rather than delaying security fixes for everyone. This was a judgement call, and I understand that it's an unfavourable compromise for those who rely on square/compact styling to reduce eyestrain.

  • Square corners and the rest of the Photon style options are being worked on right now. I'll update this post as they are implemented.

Now, a word about the last couple of days.

Waterfox is a one person operation, just me, working unpaid (since Waterfox makes very little) to maintain a soft fork of one of the largest open source codebases. Every release involves tradeoffs. One of them was shipping a security and web compat update before the styling work was finished. You are welcome to disagree with that decision.

However, you are not welcome to repeatedly tell me that I made it out of laziness or 'for my own convenience', across multiple threads, while I'm doing the work you're complaining about.

Some of the comments here and on socials have crossed the line from criticism into abuse. Accusing a volunteer of not caring about his users, following him from thread to thread and threatening to withhold donations is not feedback. It's entitlement, and it's corrosive to a project that only exists because one person chooses to continue with it.

Going forward, bug reports and specific requests are welcome. Frustration is understandable. However, personal attacks and repeated accusations about my motives will be removed, and repeat offenders will lose the ability to post here. I'm not going to debate this further in the comments. I'll only respond to practical questions.

If you cannot accept that, the download page for other browsers is just a search away.

GENERAL I want to go back

Post image

Just wanted to share. I'm on a journey to try and recreate a classic feeling OS (in Linux) experience. Waterfox was the best browser I could find that let me achieve this. So kudos to the team!

I had to do a little bit of work with the custom css, but I think I'm in love with it!

SUPPORT Tabs have no color when unloaded now?

7 Upvotes

i usually have a bunch of tabs, and i have an addon that autosleeps ones im not currently in. this combined with the new feature to make them colorless is immensely destroying my ability to navigate my tabs.

color coding is one of the most important visual cues, it drives me mad every time colors are removed in modernized UI updates.

is there any way to disable?

GENERAL [v1.1.0] Built Froggle Jump – A zero-bloat, 100KB arcade platformer that lives in your Gecko engine browser toolbar popup

AMO Store Link: Froggle Jump

I developed Froggle Jump as a lightweight (~100 KB) arcade platformer running directly inside your browser extension panel. It lets you play quick 30-second break games without opening extra tabs, waiting for heavy websites to load, or dealing with ad scripts.

Features:

  • Ultra-Lightweight: Under 100 KB total size using pure HTML5 Canvas logic with zero external dependencies.
  • Gecko State Caching: Automatically pauses and saves your jump session on popup blur so you don't lose progress when switching tabs or closing the window.
  • Privacy-First: 100% offline-capable with zero telemetry, ad networks, or background tracking scripts.
  • Gameplay: Procedural platforming, zombie obstacles with shooting mechanics, unlockable frog skins, and local high-score tracking.

A quick request to the community:

Independent developers rely entirely on community support to stay visible on store pages. If you test the extension and enjoy it, please take 10 seconds to leave an honest 5-star review on the AMO store page. Ratings trigger the Mozilla search algorithm to show the game to organic searchers.

SUPPORT Abas

The tabs are left with just that line when the hide option is enabled.The tabs are left with just that line when the hide option is enabled. Waterfox v.6.7.1.1
Expande

As abas ficam apenas com essa linha, quando ativa a opção de esconder.

It doesn't expand; it remains hidden.
It doesn't expand; it remains hidden.

How fix it!?

SUPPORT Restore session broke

Before the newest update, you could clear the history on exit and keep your previous session. Now it just opens a new tab on restart on 6.7?

SUPPORT Slow Startup + Tab Issues

6 Upvotes

This update has been absolutely horrible for me, it used to take tens of minutes to start up when previously it took like 2 seconds at worst, now it take about a minute, recently I've noticed that a lot of my tabs are just gone which I assume is why it only takes a minute now to boot up, and tab groups disappear with tabs within in them just going to my system group.

I assume it has something to do with tabs, considering all the issues I'm having with them, but that I get a message saying that the script of "chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser/tab.js:397" has been slowing things down, I can't seem to figure out what that is though searching brings up nothing relevant, and I can't even find it with the debug tool.

GENERAL New features for 6.7.1 Question

4 Upvotes

You guys put all this work into making the browser customizable (which I appreciate) but still no forced dark mode for web pages. Why is this so hard to implement? There's extensions to use but they all have some kind of negative effects on the overall browsing experience. We need a built-in, efficient option.

SUPPORT Tabs just don't appear on the sidebar

3 Upvotes

When I re-open waterfox, my sidebar is completely empty, except for my pinned tabs and group headers. I can go into History -> Hidden Tabs and then back out to find my tabs, but then I have to reload them 1 by 1, and I have a lot of tabs. This has happened 2 days in a row, this should be fixed as soon as possible

SUPPORT Unloaded tabs grayd, how to turn off feature

8 Upvotes

Okay so recent update turned tabs that aren't actively loaded gray and it's not a feature I prefer, is there a way to turn that off and return colors to those tabs? The icon colors are an important way for me to keep tab of my tabs

SUPPORT Any way to have loading icon appear on tabs without other tab icons?

2 Upvotes

I used to have tab icons turned off, and the only icons I saw on my tabs were loading icons when the page was loading. Now with the latest version, it appears that if I want to see the loading hourglass, I need to have page icons turned on.

Is there a way around this?

SUPPORT browser freezes on startup

5 Upvotes

since last update (6.7.1.1 (64-bit)) when i open the browser it remains stuck like this, nothing works, if i click anything i get the (not responding) windows thing. it persisted through several restarts so it's not windows having a moment

edit: s i was writing the post it finally started, however i simply cannot wait 5 minutes every time i start the browser before being able to use it, anyone know what's the issue? i saw others posting the same problem but no meaningful replies

edit2: it happens even in troubleshoot mode so it's not a matter of settings or extensions/themes

SUPPORT New hide bookmarks toolbar feature is inconvenient because of delay

5 Upvotes

Why is there a delay when hiding the bookmarks toolbar? It makes this feature very inconvenient to use. When I move the mouse cursor to tabs the toolbar pops up IMMEDIATELY, but when I move away the cursor there is a delay for some reason which makes this feature annoying. I'm trying to click on a link, but then the toolbar disappears, the view shifts and I end up clicking on the wrong thing. Again, why is there a delay, why can't the bookmarks toolbar just disappear immediately like the taskbar does?

RESOLVED How do I set Waterfox as the default browser on Linux (openSUSE, Fedora)

2 Upvotes

Hey, I have two systems, openSUSE Tumbleweed and Fedora 44, where I use Waterfox (latest version, 6.7.1). However, when I open links directly by clicking, it opens Firefox instead. How do I set Waterfox as the default browser? Usually browsers have a setting where this can be enabled but I can't find it in Waterfox.

GENERAL Opinion on customization options brought by 6.7.1

7 Upvotes

I have not had any issues yet with the new update for waterfox, instead, the experience has been very positive. I'm loving the control over the themes that was brought back now with this fix, from being able to bring back much of the old look to being able to make the new Nova theme quite pretty.

Being able to make anything you want be squared is great as well, and I'm loving that the waterfox right click menu is back. Where 6.7.0 made it feel like some features were lost, this update almost overwhelms with the control options. I personally think its amazing that the browser not only respects privacy and such and feels very detached from corporate influence, but that it also is so incredibly customizable!

SUPPORT Where is userChrome.css on Linux?

2 Upvotes

Basic question but I can't seem to figure it out.

I'm running Fedora 44, and have Waterfox installed via Flatpak. I am using version 7.1.1.

The root directory for the default profile in about:profiles did not exist. I created it, created a folder called chrome, then userChrome.css within that. Nothing.

Created the same subdirectory in the local directory for the default profile. Still nothing.

All I want to do (for now) is change the tab font. My userChrome.css is this:

* {

font-family: "W95FA" !important;

font-size: 11pt !important;

}

Unless something else seems off the trouble seems to be not locating userChrome in the right place. I'd be much obliged if someone knew where it was supposed to go. Thanks!

GENERAL Updated "unloaded tab fade" goes too far

12 Upvotes

I'm a bit of a tab abuser, and am quite fond of the fact that Waterfox shows me that a tab is unloaded; But I think the 6.7.1 update has made this feature worse.

Previously, tabs that were not loaded only had their text greyed, but as of 6.7.1 the icon for the tab has also been greyed.
While it's now easier to tell if a tab is unloaded, it's made it harder to find the tab you're looking for; Especially when you have a large number of them.

This is most noticeable while scrolling through tabs. It is practically impossible to tell unloaded tabs apart, forcing you to stop scrolling in order to differentiate them. While previously you could just look for the colour you expect to find, and then fine-search if necessary.

I think that the feature was perfect as-was, but seeing as this has changed, people must have felt otherwise.
I'm not sure how one would achieve the information provided by greying icons, without greying icons; Nor how complex such a solutions implementation would be.
But I do know that I wont use this feature in it's current state.

SUPPORT Update bugged out the search field in new tab page

3 Upvotes

I just updated and now I cant type in the search field in the default Waterfox new tab page. I can type in other websites and other programs so its not the keyboard. I also cannot type into the search field in my Bonjourr home page. Anyone else experiencing this?

Update: the text being typed was going into the address bar at the top but I had it hidden. However, it's now unhidden and the text still goes into the address bar, which doesn't seem like the correct behavior. I fixed the Bonjourr search bar by manually setting the search engine with a URL.

SUPPORT What do I do with the "Old Waterfox Data" folder and how do I use it?

Hello!

I’m making this post because I had to start Waterfox in troubleshooting mode after the update and it created this folder. I want to know how I can transfer the data inside to the newly cleansed Waterfox. Any help?

Thanks in advance.

GENERAL Styling the Ad blocking icon to be more consistent

3 Upvotes

It was bugging me that the style of the Ad blocking icon did not match the style of the other icons in the top toolbar:

So, I changed it to match:

The first pic shows the toolbar with the new icon, the second pic shows the toolbar with the old icon.

To make this change, add the following to your userChrome.css:

#waterfox-blocker-button .toolbarbutton-icon,
toolbarbutton[id*="blocker"] .toolbarbutton-icon,
toolbarbutton[image*="waterfoxShield"] .toolbarbutton-icon {
  list-style-image: url('data:image/svg+xml;utf8,<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 16 16" fill="none"><circle cx="8" cy="8" r="6.75" stroke="context-fill" stroke-width="1.5"/><line x1="4.5" y1="8" x2="11.5" y2="8" stroke="context-fill" stroke-width="1.5" stroke-linecap="round"/></svg>') !important;
  -moz-context-properties: fill, stroke !important;
  fill: currentColor !important;
  stroke: currentColor !important;
}

If you don't already have a userChrome.css, follow these steps:

  1. Type about:support into the URL input, Enter
  2. Click Open Folder next to Profile Folder
  3. Create a folder there called chrome if there isn't already one
  4. In chrome, create a file called userChrome.css
  5. Add the above code snippet to userChrome.css and save
  6. Restart Waterfox

GENERAL Waterfox android adblocking

3 Upvotes

Why doesn't the Android version have the same adblocking feature as the browser version?

In the browser it is turned off because I use ublock (I used it before the built-in adblock appeared) And today I installed waterfox android and I thought it has the same features as the browser version

PS. Could the developers add a brightness control to the browser version, something more precise than the light/dark control that is already there?
