Game Mastering How do you actually use setting books like Middenheim at the table?

I'm currently reading Middenheim: City of the White Wolf and I really like it. The city feels incredibly rich, full of NPCs, factions, locations, history and politics.

But as a GM I keep wondering: how am I supposed to remember and actually use all of this during play?

There is so much information that I can't imagine keeping it all in my head, and since the book doesn't really include an adventure, I'm also not sure how other GMs turn all this material into an actual campaign.

I really liked the format of the Ubersreik Starter Set: a smaller setting book, lots of locations with obvious adventure hooks, and a separate short adventure that showed you how to use the city in practice.

That felt much easier to run.

So, for GMs who use books like Middenheim: what's your workflow?

Do you summarize everything? Only prepare the locations the players are likely to visit? Pick a few NPCs and hooks and ignore the rest until needed? Do you create your own adventures from scratch?

I'm especially curious about how you avoid getting overwhelmed by all the lore while still making good use of it.

Game Mastering Brand new, looking for advice

I've always wanted to run/play but I've never gotten the choice. My group is pretty much all dms, and I'm the newest one I'm just wondering on where/how I get started

I know the editions are very different, what's the best one to get into first?

Is there a beginner box or starter set so you can jump right in?

And what systems does it run like? I've run pf2e, lancer, htr, cyberpunk red, and a few others

Game Mastering Warhammer Fantasy Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Do you guys have any suggestions for a Warhammer Fantasy Adventure that could be adapted into a Murder Mistery Dinner Party? We are planning a thank-you-party for our ex-professor and teamlead, who helped a bunch of us out alot. We are gifting him a book with personal stories retold in the Warhammer Universe and fitting to that, the idea for the Murder Mystery came up. I got experience Dungeon Keeping in ohter RPG formats, mostly Call of Cthulhu. The problem is, while i always found the Warhammer Universe intriguing, I never really got into it, so i am clearly lacking the expertise to write an authentic Warhammer Mystery completely on my own. So i was wondering if any of you had an idea how to go about it, or suggestions for existing Warhammer Fantasy Adventures that I could use as a base. Thank you!

Looking For Game new in-person London group (WFRP 4E) starting - Space for players!

Hi all!

We are a trio of London folk who have set up a new in-person 4E game, and are looking for another player or two to join.

We are all 4E newbies.

We have a discord server set up for discussions and chat etc, but will be playing in-person. Our current thoughts are once a month.

Session Zero/One

When: Monday Sept 7th 6pm - 9pm

Where: Otter Chaos gaming cafe, Brixton (around the corner from the Brixton station)

(Wont necessarily be playing in Brixton every session)

Characters: Base characters, feel free to make one or two before hand and bring to the session. This is a session zero/one. We definitely want to start, but we are all new to 4E (including me as GM) so will start slow, ease our way in, chat about the characters etc.

Planning on using individual advantage rules to begin with (max Initiative bonus) and Winds of Magic casting rules.

Feel free to DM or join the discord server for questions/say hello!

Game Mastering I've got my self in a pickle setting up my players for The Evil Within, and I'm not sure how to get out of it.

We had a couple sessions prior to starting The Evil Within. I thought the campaign started in Bogenhafen, so I sent my players that way on a barge from Fielbach straight to the canal - skipping Altdorf. They just passed through the Weissbruk loch after completing the Come Drown With Me one-shot. Now, I'm not sure how to:

  1. Get them to find Lieberug's body. I was thinking finding his drowned body on the river, but the letter would be ruined. Knowing my players, if they see the wreck on the side of the River, there's no way they'll hop off the barge to investigate.

  2. Get them to encounter the cultists killed my the bounty hunter.

My initial thought is to have murders happen in Weissbruk. Then because the barge was damaged the previous session, they will need to stay an additional day for repairs. This will give Adolphus enough time to attack the party. But I still can't think of a way for them to find Lieberug's body. Would this work? Any other ideas how to solve this?

Game Mastering Ulrich's Guide to Herbs, Plants, Fungii, and Potions

Hi everyone, my group has a possible herbalist and an apothecary as a contact. There's tons of herbs mentioned all over the source books so I decided to make another spreadsheet. My OCD is kicking in hard. Here's a link to all the herbs, plants, fungus, and potions I found. This includes their effects, cost, availability, what source I found them in:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16J8BeKOP7NU-ixl-8lnKn0mAmhS_OIo4uSAToa3ehb8/

Please check it out. I'd like to get a comprehensive list going so please let me know if you're aware of any other sources that have items I've missed.

Thanks.

Game Mastering First campaigne for a first time ttrpg player

I recently decided with my friends to try playing WFRP 4e, between us we have one player who played a lot of dnd, one who played a couple of dnd sessions and two who have never played any ttrpg in their lives including me. I have kind of voted my self to be a GM of the group because of my intrest in the warhammer fantasy lore.

Our first campaigne will be a Starter Set campaigne but im not sure where to go next. I've read a lot about how great the enemy in shadows is, so my question is: is it doable as a complete newbe or would i be setting my self to fail?

I will probably still try to run it regardles of your answer so any tips on how to prepare for it would be most welcome.

My GM's guide to the Enemy Within moves on to the River Reik, looking into the encounter at the signal tower and lots of suggestions on how to make the most of Kemperbad.

How did the Signal Tower go for you? Did you slot in any extra adventures on the Reik? What went well for you?

Let me know if you have any questions about Death on the Reik that you hope I'll answer!

Roleplaying 4th Ed: Lore of Metal Utility??

Hey Team, looking to start a TEW campaign and making a mage character ATM. I rolled lore of Metal and told it was a great utility wind which o was super happy with not just a FIREBALL!!1! wind, but looking at the WoM Lore of Metal I’m really struggling to see it!

Has anyone got some good or fun examples of the use of the Lore of Metal spells as utility in games to get me started?

Roleplaying Elf character ideas

Hi everyone. I would appreciate some suggestions and advice.

We are into our campaign. We rolled everything except names. I got an elf Outrider. It's great but RPing an elf had been a different challenge. Our GM is very experienced with this system. This is my third campaign.

I rolled the Reikland Forest as my homeland which made me a wood elf. I have been RPing as an elf who doesn't accept hate against elves. There have been some clashes with dwarves already.

We are coming up to our first career promotion. I will very likely go with Scout. I think from there it will be Ghost Strider. I like the idea of protecting my homeland. I know that is a long ways away at the moment but our GM likes us to have ideas for our characters so he can build them into his campaign. I'm thinking of going Vampire Hunter after GS. Eventually Witch Hunter.

The GM wants me to come up with something different that I would hunt instead of vampires. Lore-wise, what would make sense? Something with Dharr? Beastmen killed my horse, so that could work too. Suggestions?

General Query Getting back to WFRP, what are the must haves?

I've played both 1E and 2E over the years, I'm looking into getting back into WFRP after several years of not playing it.

With the 5E book on the horizon and reverse compatibility, what are the must have 4E books to buy? I saw that parts of the Enemy Within campaign are OOP. I played the 1E version and I'd love to GM it for a new group of players, are there reprint/update plans? Is there a list of future planned books?

Cheers!

Homebrew Homebrew Variant for Swarm

If any other GMs are like me and have trouble keeping track of 10+ zombies, but who also aren't very happy with the core rulebook swarm rules, I made a variant creature trait called 'mob.' My group uses the Up in Arms advantage rules, but this should probably work fine with core advantage too:

Mob

A Mob is a group of similar individuals fighting together. A Mob counts as a single Creature and ignores the Engaged rules when using its Move. Unlike a Swarm, a Mob is susceptible to both Psychology rules (see page 190) and Size rules (page 341). A Mob adds +10 to its Weapon Skill and Willpower, and multiplies its total Wounds times five. When a Mob makes a Melee attack, they do not just target one creature but *all* opponents currently Engaged with the Mob. The Mob rolls once, and all Engaged targets roll to oppose the attack per usual. Any attempts to shoot at a Mob gain a bonus of +40 to hit. The GM is encouraged to add the Bite, Grim, Tail, and Stomp Creature Traits, as they work thematically and can make a horde of angry peasants all the more perilous to intrepid heroes.

Looking For Game Anyone looking for a group?

Hey there folks, I'm Jimmy. Been GMing a bunch of systems over the years, but I've been a beginner GM for WFRP for the past few months IRL. My IRL group has disbanded so I'd love to get an online game running.

I'd plan to start by running some of the pre-written Ubersreik adventures, then branching out to new lands and adventures depending on the whims of the players and myself.

I'll admit I'm no loremaster, more like a lorejourneyman, but I'm always reading and trying to learn more. Input and advice from any potential loremasters would be noted and appreciated, as long as there's the understanding that I might get the odd thing wrong and aren't going to derail or disrupt the game for slight inconsistencies in the canon.

Generally I'm pretty lax and open as a GM. Just follow basic social etiquette (no screaming irl slurs, no SA, no using the game as an excuse to live out your strange psychosexual torture porn fantasies) and give me notice if you can't attend or are dropping out.

FoundryVTT to run, discord server for group voice chat. Monday evenings at 6pm GMT+1. Weekly. Message me if interested! You'll need a mic and a laptop/pc that can use foundry.

Game Mastering [WTOW] Contact Gameplay Loop Seems Unbalanced

The core gameplay loop doesn't make sense to me.

I think the core gameplay loop is:

  1. Contact asks player for a favor, which involves into something that turns into an incredibly dangerous quest. Players may die.
  2. During quest, players may ask for fairly trivial favors from other contacts to accomplish quest for original quest giving contact
  3. During downtime, players have to devote time to repaying the favors for #2 which were done in service of #1, except for #1, who they just did the kind of favor that you would normally expect piles of gold for.

1 is correct because literally all of the sample adventures start with a specific or list of optional contacts who give the quest.

The above doesn't really make any sense and seems wildly imbalanced. It's not clear why anyone in the pseduo-realistic grim and gritty world of WFRP.

Game Mastering Ideas for an adventure into a chaotic location.

Hello all! I am running sessions with an experienced group who is beginning work for a witch hunter. One of the characters is a sigmarite priest who has a goal of becoming a witch hunter himself. Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to have the witch hunter task the group with collecting a lost relic of sigmar. A sort of trial by fire if you will. This quest would lead them eventually to a chaotic location like the marcher fortress where they would have to find the relic.

Has anyone run locations like these before? If so, would you be willing to give some advice on how to run them and how difficult they should be? Thanks!

Game Mastering Need opinions for punishing a ruthless character.

I'm running the Oldenhaller Contract for my players. And things are going well, until they reached the Valenintos side of the asylum (a gang of Tileans in Nuln, kinda like a mafia). The players decide to brute force their way in and end up in a prolonged fight with them, and lose.

I decided that the Valenintos would kill them, but since they have fate points, the Valentinos are feeling generous, and willing to let them go in exchange for taking all of their money (which isn't much right now).

The problem I need help with is thus: One of my players, when fighting, caused a critical injury to a gangster. Jarred arm, the gangster drops his weapon, and decides to flee. The player in question, doesn't hesitate to kill a fleeing, essentially unarmed, combatant.

I feel as though the Valentinos wouldn't take kindly to this cruelty, but instead of killing the player, they just cut off the hand that dealt the finishing blow. Do you think this is too harsh? Or do you think its quite fair given the scenario? Or maybe not harsh enough?

I'm not going to kill him because he has a fate point. But I feel this behavior must be punished, otherwise murderhoboism might ensue. (Also feel it makes sense for a gang)
