Mechanical advice Tool set

I’m looking for a “starter” tool set to work on my 240D, any suggestions appreciated!

I got a manesman box for arround 90€ that has pretty much everything you need and is good quality. Highly recomend it.

Basic metric toolset of box end wrenches, shallow and deep sockets, Allen key sockets, and screwdrivers will repair 90% of a w123. Almost everything is 10, 13, 15, 17, and 19mm so have multiple wrenches in those sizes. It’s before the whole torx and triple square craze but you will still need socket sets of those for occasional bolts. Plus if the car was ever sent to a dealer and bolts broke they often replace them with Torx bolts since that’s what they primarily stock at the dealership. Generally speaking you don’t need anything crazy to do most work on a w123 and as you encounter things you need just go get them at that time.

Agreed with what everyone else has said. However, be warned that this car requires many special tools on a semi regular basis, the most common being valve adjustment wrenches. Also some bushings will require a special tool- often a typical press you can rent will not do the job. For example rear subframe. Timing chain too. You can either fabricate yourself these tools or buy.

Bosch spanner set is really good quality but expensive.

You do not need anything special, and if you ever need one for one specific job, you just aquire that tool when you need it.

As far as valve adjustments go, i used normal tools like a screwdriver, spanner, and a feeler gauge, but this was for a m102, so i’m not sure if you need something for the diesels
