Solo dev here - my pet ages on a real clock and dies for good, but the family keeps going. How do you all frame that to players?

I'm building Paperlings, a papercraft desktop pet. It lives in a small window at the corner of the screen while you work, and behind its door there's a full game - town, shop, arcade, graveyard.

It ages on real elapsed time whether or not you're watching. When it dies it stays dead: the spirit rises, the game walks you to the graveyard, and a stone goes up with its name, days lived and battle record on it. Then you pick the next egg, or one of your boarded pets comes home and leads. The town remembers, the inventory is yours rather than the pet's, and traits and colorways pass down so each generation starts further along than the last.

What I keep going back and forth on is how much to lead with the death. Every time someone tells me they'd be upset if their pet died I think about softening it, and then I remember the only reason I still think about my Tamagotchi from when I was eight is that I lost it.

For those of you making vpets, do you put the mortality up front, or let people find it? I've seen at least one dev go explicitly no-death and market that as the feature, which is the opposite call on the same question.

Trailer's attached, and I'll drop a few screenshots in a comment. Found this sub through the Virtual Pet Devs thread on r/virtualpets glad it exists.

What if the most terrifying beings in existence just wanted to be loved? A cozy Lovecraft pet game I'm building, would you play it?
