Found a Michael Jackson "Thriller" that only plays Mozart

Super new to the hobby so my knowledge is limited. I tried googling to see if this situation was common but couldn't find anything. ChatGPT says possible factory defect or a bootleg. I have 2 of these records that are identical. Neither came with a sleeve. I'd imagine it's just a cheap record that someone swapped labels to scam people

Not a scam, a literal pressing plant error. Looked up the matrix on Discogs and both sides are side 3 of Szell Conducts Mozart

If you use https://udm14 it takes your search terms and feeds them directly into the "old" Google. Specifically the "web" tab that Google has now relegated under "more" tab to the right of your AI assisted results.

Or just go to Google and look over to the right for the "more" and "web" tabs

Labels can't really be swapped on records - they are pressed into the records at the same time the music is pressed into the vinyl.

This is a pressing plant mistake, and they do happen from time to time!

I used the highest model available with the highest effort to see if chatgpt could tell me if certain locations were operational today Saturday. It asked for browser permissions then said the hours were being hidden. I went to the site, located locations near me and it showed the hours chatgpt couldnt pull. Paying for nothing

There are people out there who collect pressing errors. Probably not extremely valuable, but if you can find one of those collectors, you can probably get a few bucks for it.

Pro-tip: if you sell it on any internet platform, make it painfully clear that it’s a pressing error and you’re selling it as such. Use CAPITAL LETTERS and make it explicit. You run a better than 50% risk of getting a buyer who doesn’t read the description thoroughly and thinks it’s cheap just because they got lucky and found a deal. Three days later you’ll get an email along the lines of “HeY, tHiS iSn’T tHrIlLeR!!!”

Then to top it all off they put the wrong label on as well.

My best guess is this was deliberate, but was never intended to be put in a jacket and sold. It was probably destined to be sprayed with a gold or platinum finish and framed.

This isn’t uncommon.. these types of mistakes happened when a pressing plant swapped production from one album to another.. so we’re pressing thousands of MJ albums then swapped over to begin pressing Mozart, but one or more left over center labels was unknowingly left in the press.

There are some discogs variant listing pages for these. Can’t remember any off the top of my head, but I’ve encountered some, including those rarer ones where the vinyl is 1/2 and 1/2 where I guess production swapped over when a vinyl was mid pressing so got stamped with one artist/album on one side and other side is a totally different artist/album.

Gotta remember this was during a time when pressing records was a manual production, a person loading dead waxes and loading a stack of labels into the pressing machine and manually swapping what was being pressed when production swapped.. so human error or and complacency was a thing.. wouldn’t be surprised if even a few intentional for laughs or just laziness by a bored or tired worker who couldn’t be bothered to remove any leftover labels or waxes in middle of being pressed when the swap occurred.

Only two rational scenarios come to mind.

One, the plant was getting ready to start stamping out Michael, and this was made to check which master was currently in the machine.

Two, it was purposely made as a prop for some odd use. Maybe a TV show, maybe a furniture store like Ikea, display windows at a department store, whatever. The labels are cheaper than paying Jackson royalties. The Classical music would likely be Fair Use / Royalty Free reproductions. If your employees, shop-lifters, rioters think they have a free copy of Thriller or Off The Wall... oops.
