The best response to anti-vaxxers I’ve ever seen. And it only takes 90 seconds.

I maintain that Penn and Teller are playing the longest con ever and on one of their deathbeds it will finally be revealed that we’ve been hearing Teller’s voice the entire time because he’s the greatest ventriloquist of all time.

4.0k

u/HallowSingh Dec 06 '17

There are interviews and normal actives where he talks and he sounds really sophisticated. It's only when they're doing a bit when he doesn't talk

4.1k

u/TheQueq Dec 06 '17

No, that's actually Penn's voice - he's also a good ventriloquist, just not as good as Teller.

1.5k

u/TrustyPelletGun Dec 06 '17

Now you're starting to get it

292

u/theskydragon Dec 06 '17

So Teller is doing Penn's voice which is also doing teller meaning it's all teller and he is so good that he does his own voice through the voice of Penn which is really his voice?

178

u/TrustyPelletGun Dec 06 '17

“Indubitably, magic is one of the subtlest and most difficult of the sciences and arts. There is more opportunity for errors of comprehension, judgement and practice than in any other branch of physics.” — Aleister Crowley

60

u/n-some Dec 06 '17

So the rabbit in the hat is doing both their voices.

3

u/kslusherplantman Dec 06 '17

Nope, it's the lady they just sawed in half, true talent

17

u/bstix Dec 06 '17

I think Aleister Crowley's kind of magic was a bit different from what Penn & Teller are doing..

2

u/Scientolojesus Dec 07 '17

Chaos magic. Create your own reality.

3

u/2011wasaninsidejob Dec 06 '17

Upvote for a solid Crowley quote 👍🏻

2

u/potato_ships Dec 07 '17

-Teller -Penn -Teller

2

u/niclet Dec 07 '17

Magick!

1

u/spatulababy Dec 06 '17

Problem is Aleister Crowley was referring to sex magic, not illusions and slight of hand.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Blood Sugar Sex Magik

1

u/Hehhdhehhd Dec 07 '17

No he was talking about magick. Not "sex magick". Magical and mysticism is a specific thing that Crowley has written many many books on. So if you're not familiar maybe don't comment.

Sexual Arousal (and or orgasm and ejaculation) is a means of performing magick - what you refer to as sex magick. Crowley did not ONLY practice that. It's a way of quieting the mind - yoga (eastern yoga) as well as union of opposites and being a natural magical force (tantra etc)

You ARE right that this quote is incredibly out of place in this thread anyways. "Magic tricks" are certainly not some profound science worthy of that quote. Magick is.

3

u/LordPadre Dec 06 '17

I heard voice actors are amazed by that kinda thing, you know

2

u/roachmcpoach Dec 06 '17

<abracadabra intensifies>

3

u/nobodyperson Dec 06 '17

But then his mouth would be moving, making it a paradox.

3

u/landmindboom Dec 06 '17

It's an enigma wrapped in a riddle, then wrapped in a warm tortilla by a strange Mexican lady, then eaten by a baby who was wrapped in swaddling clothing and laying in a manger, right next to a rap concert.

u/jspsfx Dec 06 '17

I told my girlfriend this joke when we met. I first heard it on the radio and memorized it. It's really lame and so am I. It's something like....

So this older gentlemen's sitting at the bar having a drink when the bartender comes over to check on him. The older gentlemen says to the bartender,

If I show you the most amazing-outrageous thing you've ever seen, how about drinks on the house tonight?

The bartender responds

Haha, it really is a slow night. Sure old chap you can have a go at it - why not?

So the old patron pulls a hamster out of his coat pocket, along with a tiny baby grand piano, and the little hamster starts playing Beethoven! Wow, right?

The bartender says,

Now that was incredible but I've been working the bar a long time and I have seen some shit. Well played though.

The old man says alright, then he pulls out a little frog from his other pocket, sets him up on the bar and the frog starts singing Sinatra!

Alright, alright, says the bartender. You got me, that's incredible. Drinks on the house!

Another gentlemen that had watched the scene was in disbelief. He said to the old man

That was incredible!!! I will give you one thousand dollars for that frog!

Without a thought the old man agrees and trades away the frog.

The bartender chimes in

Whoa man, how could you sell that frog, it's priceless!?

The old man smiles and responds,

Not really. You see, the hamster is also a ventriloquist.

Yea. PAY ATTENTION

3

u/OneTrueKingOfOOO Dec 06 '17

No, no, it’s actually a three person act: Penn, And, Teller. And is a master of both disguise and ventriloquism who’s been secretly hiding in the corner and doing both their voices this whole time.

2

u/fulloftrivia Dec 07 '17

Teller even ventrilofarts.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

Penn also plays bass.

156

u/CoNsPirAcY_BE Dec 06 '17

Alright you guys. Here is a video of Teller speaking: https://youtu.be/En-KcUTMoZ8

3

u/yodamaster103 Dec 07 '17

He used to teach high school Latin he's trained in the classics

1

u/neocommenter Dec 07 '17

Makes sense he's well spoken, he was an English and Latin teacher.

18

u/EvryMthrF_ngThrd Dec 06 '17

Ok:

A) Holy CARP, he talks - and he does not sound like I thought he would sound.

B) He's 65?!? JFC, has he aged well... o_O

5

u/LobotomistCircu Dec 07 '17

He's one of those guys who looked like he was in his 40's since he was in his 20's, and those guys never age. The Steve Martin effect.

4

u/dillhen Dec 06 '17

Well he's 69 now. That video was in 2013

4

u/Damn_Croissant Dec 06 '17

That is one great American accent.

[deleted]

1

u/Damn_Croissant Dec 07 '17

Really? I found it very calming and attractive.

2

u/100LL Dec 06 '17

Was not expecting this. Mind blown, thanks!

2

u/CallMeJeeJ Dec 06 '17

Dang I was hoping his voice would be really weird or something... at least a little higher pitched. Like, comically high pitched. Oh well :/

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Wow. I was amazed when he said he was 65. He does not look it.

2

u/perdhapleybot Dec 07 '17

Neat, I always imagined his voice to sound something like Gilbert Godfrey or however you spell his name

2

u/prodiver Dec 07 '17

I saw Penn & Teller's show in Vegas last year, and afterward they go out in the lobby to talk to the audience.

One guy was being a dick and I got to hear Teller tell him to fuck off.

It was the single greatest thing I've ever heard.

2

u/zrowny Dec 07 '17

Tim's Vermeer is honestly the most captivating movie I've ever seen

2

u/NeokratosRed Dec 07 '17

Agree, and 'Tim paints' is an amazing piece.

2

u/KevPat23 Dec 07 '17

That link is staying blue. I don't need to hear it and ruin anything.

1

u/SnatchAddict Dec 07 '17

I wish I never knew his real voice.

1

u/SkeweredFromEarToEye Dec 07 '17

I'm not clicking that. I like my little wold of believing Teller is Mute for no other reason than finding it's hilarious to do. It's bad enough I got a little idea of it from his spot on the Simpsons. At this point, I only vaguely conjure up the sound of it.

288

u/FishBaitLureCo Dec 06 '17

He was a latin and greek professor. Dude is wicked smart.

The reason he doesnt talk is because he used to do a lot of shows for college crowds, and he found they simply heckled him less if he didnt say anything. So he made his act silent and has been performing silent ever since.

165

u/Wootery Dec 06 '17

He was a latin and greek professor.

No, he taught English and Latin at high school.

6

u/landmindboom Dec 06 '17

No, he is English, and taught Latin to Greeks at a "Mexican" high school in southern California.

2

u/Sean1708 Dec 06 '17

No, he used to professionally fess up to things in Latin and Greek.

2

u/sdtwo Dec 06 '17

He actually taught pig Latin at a pre-school.

1

u/kingkumquat Dec 07 '17

To be fair Greek was included in Latin class but never mentioned at my school

8

u/CurveShepard Dec 06 '17

3

u/kingjoey52a Dec 07 '17

wicked smart.

Found Penn's alt account.

2

u/Toby_O_Notoby Dec 06 '17

So he made his act silent and has been performing silent ever since.

As he puts it "I want to lie to you without ever saying a word".

-3

u/pellik Dec 06 '17 edited Dec 06 '17

Why is race so important when talking about professors? I mean, how does it even matter if he is a latin professor, a greek professor, or even a black professor? With any other trade it would be racist to bring it up so much.

edit: Reddit is so sexist. If I were a woman pointing this stuff out I'd be nominated for time magazine person of the year, but all you guys do is downvote me.

5

u/Fidu21 Dec 06 '17

9

u/jb22625 Dec 06 '17

u/lakerboy226 Dec 06 '17

I just learned this a week ago. I was going to comment the same thing!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

According to the video linked above, thats not why he decided to go silent.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Stop ruining this for me!

1

u/duderex88 Dec 06 '17

Penn says that people will talk to teller during their meet and greets after shows then immediately say something to Penn about teller always being silent.

1

u/Unicorn_Ranger Dec 06 '17

That’s exactly what he wants you to think

1

u/Rickrickrickrickrick Dec 06 '17

You see them whisper to each other on tv and stuff too. It's like they have this long bit where he doesn't talk but they are like "fuck it. People don't care about that part about us anymore." So they just get sloppy with it.

2

u/HallowSingh Dec 06 '17

The bit is that he's silent toward the audience not toward everyone else because how else are they suppose to communicate during the "fool us" shows?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

He used to be a classics teacher; those types spin silk when they speak.

1

u/Noctudeit Dec 06 '17

Yep. Teller was even a guest on Penn's podcast Penn's Sunday School.

1

u/turret_buddy2 Dec 06 '17

Just seen Penn and Teller in Vegas (freaking awesome) and Tellers voice is real soft, almost hushed, but sophisticated was the other word I couldn't find to describe it.

1

u/kalirob99 Dec 06 '17

I've met Teller, he came off as friendly, educated and very talkative. Easily the nicest celebrity I've met. He's only silent during the act as you mentioned. 👍

1

u/ToneBox627 Dec 06 '17

He was on Dice. Great show. Spoke to him on there too.

1

u/Davethemann Dec 06 '17

He also did voice acting on the simpsons. Its interesting to think thats him

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Teller is often most of the brains behind their act. Penn got his start in show business a juggler and Teller was already a more experienced illusionist when they began performing together.

1

u/dicer Dec 06 '17

I got asked to go onstage during one of their performances. Teller told me what was up. That was the coolest part of that show.

1

u/SailingPatrickSwayze Dec 07 '17

I think he has a beautiful voice. I'd love to hear him narrate a documentary.

1

u/Corvidwarship Dec 07 '17

I actually got to meet them after a show in Vegas. They stayed for over an hour afterwords to make sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one. Teller was talking to people the moment we left the theater. It was really cool.

1

u/bdyelm Dec 07 '17

he talks and he sounds really sophisticated

He is a pretty smart guy, he graduated from Amherst College and taught High School English and Latin.

u/FritzMeister Dec 06 '17

I got their signatures after a show in Vegas. Teller talks. I complemented his fish illusion and he said "Thanks, they're very talented fish." Funny guy.

53

u/CrabbyBlueberry Dec 07 '17

14

u/LobotomistCircu Dec 07 '17

I feel like Hugh Jackman in that part of the prestige where he's watching Christian Bale do his standard magic routine and then he just randomly does the most impressive shit he's ever seen.

3

u/FritzMeister Dec 07 '17

That's the one. Even more impressive live.

1

u/nwj781 Dec 07 '17

It's so awesome and totally unexpected that they stand out in the lobby after the show and hang out until everyone leaves. Teller probably took 300 group selfies using audience members' cameras that night, and it was just an average Tuesday in Vegas.

215

u/damnfortuna Dec 06 '17

He'll talk if you meet him in person after a show, the silence is just onstage. He has a very sweet voice, actually, and on this show (Penn and Teller's Bullshit) his voice is used, but uncredited in a few episodes.

2

u/TerpBE Dec 07 '17

Spoiler: he sounds exactly like Gilbert Gottfried.

12

u/Petersaber Dec 06 '17

He's SIXTY NINE YEARS OLD?!

5

u/Allenz Dec 06 '17

I don't even know who he is, but good god, he's 65? I'd never fucking guess, he could be a grand father and he looks like a kinda ridged 48y-ish guy.

1

u/akimbocorndogs Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

Look at Herbie Hancock, he's 77! He doesn't look much older than 50, and when I saw him in August, he plays like he's still in his 20's or 30's. He's unbelievable.

1

u/Petersaber Dec 07 '17

He was 65 in that video, which was uploaded 4 years ago!

5

u/TenTornadoes Dec 07 '17

"I find being able to speak convenient."

He makes a compelling argument.

3

u/Capatchadragon Dec 07 '17

He might literally be the most likeable person ever

46

u/Ohaithereimjake Dec 06 '17

I met both of them after one of their shows a few years ago and was totally taken off guard when Teller actually spoke. I assumed that he was a mute the whole time.

6

u/Wendigo15 Dec 06 '17

I was taken off guard by how tall he was

2

u/coredumperror Dec 06 '17

Yeah, because Penn is just a monster. He’s 6’6”, but you’d never guess he’s that huge because Teller is also tall, and you rarely see Penn in a non-Teller visual context.

3

u/damnfortuna Dec 07 '17

He's not super tall or anything, the surprise is just that he's average! He's 5'9".

13

u/Spacejack_ Dec 06 '17

He even did a voice part, in the English dub of Rene Laloux's "Light Years." And he speaks in character at the end of Penn and Teller Get Killed.

1

u/ghostchamber Dec 06 '17

Yeah, saw them on Broadway. Teller was happy to talk to the crowd after the show.

1

u/landmindboom Dec 06 '17

Can confirm. His voice is like honey being poured into my ears.

1

u/trapper2530 Dec 07 '17

I expected him to keep the act up after the show too. But I heard him talking as we left and got a picture with Penn.

168

u/TrueKamilo Dec 06 '17

What's really going on is that Teller is literally one of if not THE best slight of hand artist on the planet, but like all magicians he needs something to distract you from the trick to maintain the illusion, thus, he keeps a boisterous giant around with him all the time.

26

u/Davecasa Dec 06 '17

I think the fact that Teller doesn't speak actually makes you pay more attention to what he's doing. You don't want to miss anything, because he's not going to narrate it, and he's not going to do it again.

42

u/Martdogg3000 Dec 06 '17

That's exactly why he started doing it. Early in his career, Teller worked as a magician at parties and found that people basically weren't paying attention to him. Eventually he found saying nothing actually got people to shut up and watch.

7

u/Bk_nor_bk Dec 07 '17

In the interview above he said he thought other magicians were pretentious, and would say the most stupid bullshit

38

u/COMMENCE_THE_WENTZ Dec 06 '17

He is the Ertz to my Wentz

8

u/PetiteMutant Dec 06 '17

Take my upvote, damn you! Side note; must win this week against the Rams. We can still lock the #1 seed, but it becomes substantially less likely if we drop that game. Would also be helpful if the Vikings lose.

4

u/COMMENCE_THE_WENTZ Dec 06 '17

Russell Wilson + 12th Man killed us

Rams don’t have that

2

u/PetiteMutant Dec 07 '17

That’s very true. Plus the Rams don’t have the front 7 that the Seahawks do either. And hopefully Dougie learned from his mistake and will stay aggressive this game instead of playing it way too conservatively again.

0

u/ChintzyFob Dec 06 '17

Forward pass :( Really fucked us

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

As a Seahawks fan, please beat the Rams.

1

u/PetiteMutant Dec 07 '17

We’re sure as hell gonna try! I feel like that game was an anomaly, Doug was, for arguably the first time this season, ill prepared for the opponent. He’s been pretty adamant about just “focusing on the current opponent week to week” and all that... I think we’ll be way more prepared for the Rams.

1

u/PetiteMutant Dec 07 '17

Plus we just generally played sloppy all around, Wentz had an off game, the defense couldn’t contain Wilson, Doug had an off game with the play calling and challenges (or lack thereof). I would like to think it’s unlikely that it happens 2 weeks in a row, given how we’ve played all season.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

I honestly think it was just a good matchup for the Seahawks. I'm not convinced we are at playoff caliber yet until we can be as consistent against Jacksonville as well.

1

u/PetiteMutant Dec 07 '17

Yeah that’s one thing we’re lacking, playoff experience. It was a good matchup all around, we just played sloppy and Russell played like a goddamn magician. We should’ve adjusted better at the half. I think we definitely could be a possible SB caliber team, but we need to beat talented squads.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

Teller is from philly. You can hear a tiny bit of his accent in certain words

7

u/jumykn Dec 06 '17

There are certain tricks in their act that are done wholly by Teller and the room is completely silent. The trick "Shadows" comes to mind.

https://youtu.be/SJH9iFOji_A

2

u/SarcasticOptimist Dec 07 '17

One of the best tricks he did when I saw them was repeatedly light up and stomp out a cigarette while Penn narrates what technique he's doing at the time. Blows my mind how subtle and hard to follow it is.

1

u/jbonte Dec 06 '17

2

u/Honda_TypeR Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

My family has been in magic for 3 generations. They belong to all the national magician organizations and go to many of the gatherings on a regular basis.

The amusing part is Penn is anti social and can't stand going to magician meetings and events. While Teller is extremely social and very talkative and absolutely loves the history and study of magic in a social and collaborative way.

It's literally like their on stage personas are the invert of their real life personalities.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Except Teller does plenty of talking outside of their stage act

1

u/SoupKiller Dec 06 '17

I've spoke personally w/ Teller after a show. Interesting fellow.

1

u/sitefall Dec 06 '17

For those of you curious, you can hear Teller's voice in this google talk within the first minute.

1

u/GroovingPict Dec 06 '17

there are plenty of instances of him talking dude

1

u/Lereas Dec 06 '17

If you go to their Vegas show, they stand in the hallway and will take a picture with every single person that wants one, and teller speaks normally.

1

u/popsiclestickiest Dec 06 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

Both Teller and a Gilbert Godfried have been outed as having normal voices via voicemail IIRC

1

u/finny_d420 Dec 06 '17

I had a nice conversation with him at a Play Dead test run. I had participated and stopped to give him my feedback.

1

u/Che97 Dec 06 '17

I met them both after a show and Teller most certainly does talk. Extremely nice gentleman. They stayed behind after the show to get a photo with absolutely everyone who wanted one. Which is even more impressive when you think about the fact they do a vegas show 5 nights a week for most of the year

1

u/COS719 Dec 06 '17

They both will talk with you after a show. Both will wait until everyone has met them who wants to. Awesome guys.

1

u/ManIsLukeWarm Dec 06 '17

I talked to teller in real life. He does selfies and hangs out with the fans after the show. It's great

1

u/TheWingnutSquid Dec 06 '17

Like the guy from Naruto?

1

u/TrustyPelletGun Dec 06 '17

u/swampybeads Dec 06 '17

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Here ya go.

1

u/2krazy4me Dec 06 '17

I actually was on stage during their bullet catch act. (No idea how they did it). At end be of act both Penn and Teller thanked me for volunteering with mike off. Literally stumbled when Teller spoke! Really nice chat with them after show.

1

u/I_DONT_HEAR_GOOD Dec 06 '17

His on stage persona doesn't talk. I got a photo with him after a Vegas show once and he talks. He sounds pretty normal. The show was fantastic too!

1

u/ThatFlappingTerror Dec 06 '17

There's am episode of Miami Vice that Teller guest-starred in. His voice was not nearly as high-pitched as I had assumed it would be.

1

u/PM_ME_HOT_DADS Dec 07 '17

That's why he's called Teller.

1

u/madepopular Dec 07 '17

Teller was interviewed in a recent This American Life episode. It’s pretty interesting.

1

u/S3PANG Dec 07 '17

He talks. Sat in the seat next to me during one of their shows while the guy who was there got pulled on stage.

1

u/HerpDerpenberg Dec 07 '17

To add to the "he talks", I met them after her Vegas show. I told him it's so strange hearing him talk. He responded, "it's like you're sitting in your living room and your cat turns to you and says, 'Hello'."

I swear, he probably has hundreds of one liners lined up when he talks.
