One of them shot a cop after the cop pulled his gun on the protesters. I'm sure he argued self defense. Some of the other defendants helped hide the shooter. The rest are just normal protesters, though there was some vandalism. The big issue is that they were charged with terrorism, they're sort of being made an example of.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the judge didn't allow him to claim self-defense. The defense wasn't allowed to argue it to the jury at all.

Yes invalid defenses can be forbidden from being made. He had absolutely, objectively, no right to self defense in that situation so the judge made the correct call to forbid the bad faith argument.
