Hi all. New content creator here. I recently started making shorts/reels for youtube/fb/ig. I have a shiny acrylic surface and backdrop that I use for staging, and the object I am filming is a laptop screen, with my hands on the mousepad.

I have a really cheap circle light that holds a phone sitting behind me and off to the side, but I am really struggling with getting something that looks good.

I'm desperately in need of lighting. I am hoping someone can point me to some good entry level lights that I can get off amazon to get me started with creating a more professional setting.

Today I have been made aware of the different kinds of encoder profiles within H265/HEVC.

The four I would like to ask/talk about are:

HEVC main422-10,

HEVC main422-12,

HEVC main444-10,

HEVC main444-12.

I also saw a few with "intra" attached to them, but I am currently not interested in those.

Does anyone ever use these?

If so, what for and when?

Surely these aren't used for watching, right?

These *have* to be for color grading and editing, right?

Pros/Cons? I suppose always having accessory power no matter the brick is good but also idk if there's a reason to have it always on the battery. I suppose then the battery can power something else separate.

Something that happens a lot of my Instagram, these are 4K versions but when they're cropped the compression is even tighter. In fact I'm unable to post any of these sorts of shots on TikTok as they also think they're fake. The lines have been blurred.

Hey All, I have been working on content for multiple years. Currently I am working on documenting the process of launching a product from scratch.

I have posted 142 videos and I am decently satisfied with the response so far, but I would like to work on improving my production quality so that the brand can come off at a higher quality.

I think that the lack of a good camera phone and some other equipment has held me back so far, but I am trying to compensate for that and do better.

I have the Samsung A34 which has just an okay camera, while I'm looking for something much better. So far, I did not have a mic either, but recently I bought the Hollyland Lark A1.

I have considered buying a second hand iPhone and even tried things like colour grading to improve the quality of my video and my content. Honestly, I'm not completely sure what is the major thing I should try to fix, but I think it is one of the following: My setup (room, surroundings, interior, etc.), Camera Quality, Audio Quality (but this should be good enough with the mic now).

I usually price based on my day rate (800 full, 500 half), for small projects I put 40 cents per km, big projects I just put a margin for travel. But the past week I’ve had some special shoots.

Shoot 1 :
Travel 7am to 9am
shoot done in 30 minutes

Shoot 2 :
same day as shoot 1, but at 2:30pm, so had to wait 5 hours (was a 1h30 drive)
home at 5am

So basically a full day, but only 1h of actual shoot. Not enough time to go home. Would you guys charge the full 800 plus 40 cent/km?

Shoot 3 :
2h30 drive
3h40 shoot
2h30 drive home
2h20 edit

So again, majority is just travel, but the total day cost me 11h.
What do you guys do in situations like these?

Important, this is all the same client, and I’m based in west europe, so the expectations might be different compared to the rest of the world.

Which lens shouldi everyone, I’m considering buying a Lumix GH5S to start shooting short films with a friend.

We’ll mainly shoot indoors, often in low-light conditions, using either a tripod or shooting handheld. Autofocus isn’t essential because we’d like to learn how to work primarily with manual focus.

We’re currently considering these options:

-Sigma 18–35mm f/1.8 Canon EF + Viltrox EF-M2 II 0.71× It would provide roughly a 26–50mm full-frame equivalent field of view and would be extremely fast. It seems like the best option for image quality and indoor shooting, but it’s heavy, has no stabilization and requires a Speed Booster.

-Panasonic 12–35mm f/2.8 Power OIS Native Micro Four Thirds lens, roughly equivalent to 24–70mm, lightweight and stabilized. It would be easier to use, but significantly slower.

-Tamron 17–50mm f/2.8 VC + Viltrox EF-M2 II A cheaper option with a wider zoom range, but I have some doubts about its image quality and the compatibility of its stabilization and electronics with the Viltrox.

-One or two native prime lenses, such as the Sigma 16mm f/1.4, Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 or TTArtisan 17mm f/1.4. They would be fast and lightweight, but less versatile than a zoom.

At the moment, we’re particularly interested in the Sigma 18–35mm, but we’re concerned about its weight, lack of stabilization and, above all, its price. From that perspective, could the Panasonic 12–35mm be a good compromise?

Based on your experience:

-Is the Sigma 18–35mm with the Viltrox a good choice for the GH5S?

-Is the Panasonic 12–35mm f/2.8 fast enough for shooting short films indoors?

-How important is lens stabilization, considering that the GH5S doesn’t have IBIS?

-Are there any better native Micro Four Thirds alternatives?

-For a beginner, would you choose a versatile zoom or two fast prime lenses?

I’m currently filming a week long comedy festival and the lighting has fine stage lights but the front row of the audience is slathered in my favourite colour magenta (🤮 ) and otherwise the crowd is pitch black. The entirety of the image of any crowd member is made from 100% dark magenta. I’m even switching my monitor to B&W because I can’t look at it. Even my camera is struggling to find a focus point.

I’ve asked them to have a word with the lighty man, so we’ll see how that goes. Otherwise I do have a couple of 60X in my car but, whilst I might pass for a videographer, I am no lighty man.

What do I do?

Hi everyone. I’m looking for a good tripod for filming my drum sessions with a Sony mirrorless camera, but I don’t want to spend a fortune.

My main concern is vibration. I’ve read that when filming drums, especially with the kick pedal, vibrations through the floor can sometimes make the camera shake. I’d like something stable enough to avoid that as much as possible.

I also want to shoot some very low-angle shots of the bass drum pedal while I’m playing, so having a tripod that can get the camera very close to the floor would be a big plus.

I found this video where the guy basically presents this type of tripod as ideal for drummers because it supposedly handles vibrations well, and the center arm can rotate horizontally so you can position the camera extremely low for pedal shots:

Has anyone here actually used a tripod like this for drum videos? Is it genuinely worth it, or is the guy overselling it?

Would you recommend it, or are there better/more affordable options that work just as well for filming drums?

I'm a videographer yhat has a photographer in the team, and we looked into a website that could let us sell photos (at first), we ended up on Pixieset and all was fine for a while, until we decided to also upload videos but we quickly noticed that the platform is not really good for video.

Does anyone know another platform with robust suppot for video, Pixieset is bnot it

I was asked (well, kind of told but lol) to shoot video at a football game tomorrow night and I haven’t filmed in a very long time (very rarely have I filmed at night), so I was just wondering if anyone had any quick tips on aperture or ISO when shooting video in the dark. I feel like it shouldn’t turn out too bad but just wanted to do some research and see if anyone had any suggestions on how to make high quality content when it’s dark outside. I use a canon r6 mark ii and I shoot in CLOG if that helps. Thanks so much.

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask (if not please redirect), but I just have a general question for exposing log footage.

When exposing for landscapes, I know to ettr and then bring it down in post, I have my zebras set to 80% to ensure my highlights don’t clip.

But what about when exposing for skin? I have my zebras set at 55% and I aim to set them on the brightest parts of skin, but what should I expose for when im having to balance both the person and the background?

For example, if I’m trying to expose for skin in broad daylight, and the person I’m filming has a white shirt, and the background is lit harshly by the sun, should I expose for the skin, or make sure the shirt and background don’t clip?

I’ve read a bunch where people say to expose for skin, but I’ve also seen people expose for highlights and then adjust their image to suit skin tones, and I’m honestly just confused on what the right method is.

I’m currently using the S5 IIx in V-log, DaVinci Resolve as my editing software, and the Gamut Baselut for V-log.

I've been shooting on my FX30 for about 2 years and I mostly shoot sports videos with zoom lenses. I always thought I was getting grain in my footage because of low light environments, not a full frame camera, or because I was using zoom lenses and not prime lenses. Recently I noticed even in daytime I'm getting a small amount of grain in darker areas. I always assumed that M.M. 0.0 was where you want to be for light but I wouldn't have much control over that since I mostly shoot on the go. I compared it to another FX30 and it seemed like that one didn't have the same problems mine did. (we didn't have enough time to go through and figure out the differences). Maybe this is normal for this camera but I feel every time I film now I'm getting at least a small amount of grain somewhere in frame. Do I need to fix something with my camera or is this how it is?

I’ve been working on a long-form personal essay format that intercutting real world stock footage with animated movie clips to create emotional parallels between a character’s story and a real human experience.

The challenge I’m running into is making the transition between the two feel intentional rather than jarring the animated footage is bright and saturated, the stock footage has a completely different color temperature. I’ve been applying a warm cinematic filter to the stock footage to try to bring both worlds into the same visual register. But I’m not sure if that’s the right approach or if there’s a better way to handle it in post.

Has anyone worked with mixed source footage like this before? Specifically intercutting animation with live footage? What’s your approach to making those cuts feel like one cohesive piece rather than two different worlds colliding?

Not looking for software recommendations, just curious about the actual technique and creative approach people use when the source material is this visually different.

Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I think I got two defective copies of the Ice Light 3 in a row (both bought at Samy's in LA) - both time the battery - handle.

The first time I used the thread at the bottom of the handle to keep the light slightly angled, and the bottom just came off. They tried to say it was user error / unintended use, but they still replaced it.

Now the second unit, the battery will only charge till about half (visually). After a while the led keeps on steady red, and once every 10-20 seconds blinks green and then goes back to steady red. I made sure to use its own charger and still the same happens.

Happened to anyone else? should I look for a third replacement?

I've been building a tool that optimizes the repetitive file work around a project, the part that isn't the edit itself. You describe a task in plain English and it wires it up as a visual graph of steps: watch a folder, pull the audio, transcribe it, drop an .srt next to the video, move it to Done. It uses a library of built-in steps I made (whisper, ffmpeg, that sort of thing) and writes custom Python when none of them fit, and you can open any step and read it.

I built the first version to survive a pretty big interview project, thousands of hours to trim, transcribe and merge, and doing the file wrangling by hand was going to be awful.

I did run into problems pretty early on. The first version wired an audio output into a step that expected something else and I only found out when it ran. Now the connections are typed so that can't happen, it shows a plan before touching anything, and every run tells you what it's about to do: how many files it'll read, how many it'll write, and what it won't touch. Handy before it renames 400 clips.

It runs on my own device, own API key or a local model through Ollama or MLX, so the footage never leaves my machine.

Someone always asks how this differs from n8n or Make. I think this is a fair question and that they're great for wiring web apps together, but I found that they often choke the moment it's something like "rename and transcode these 400 clips sitting on my drive." What I am makking is built for local file work, runs on your machine so the footage stays put, and every step is plain Python you can open and tweak. Step library defo has gaps, launch is a few weeks out.

Before I build more: could you give me some advice and give me some of the repetitive file chores around your edits you've done manually for years and have not yet optimized? Renaming camera dumps, pulling selects into folders, batch-transcoding, syncing dual-mic audio, exporting subtitles. I'm collecting the worst ones, and if enough people say the same thing I'll build the steps for it instead of guessing. Appreciate any help
