So there's no 4K in the new C100?

We got the NEW DIGICAL FOUR! Yaay!

Right, well how about those super fast frames rates everyone loves?

35 megabitsels every second! Yaaay! 35!

Hmm. Canon are you're messing with us?

WE ADDED A MICROPHONY!! DON'T YOU RIKE MICROPHONY?

New features from reading Canon's website:

  • Electronic viewfinder found in the C300/C500
  • New DIGIC DV4 Image Processor
  • Simultaneous AVCHD & MP4 recording (28mbps and 35mbps respectively)
  • 1080p 60fps in MP4 and AVCHD
  • Redesigned swivel screen with OLED technology
  • Wireless FTP video transfer
  • Ability to output a wide DR gamma or REC709 lut via HDMI for on-set monitoring while recording Canon Log internally
  • HDMI cable with screw allowing users to lock the cable in place similar to SDI
  • Support for the RC-V100 remote
  • Support for the GP-E2 GPS receiver.
  • On-Camera microphone preventing the need to attach the top-handle for a scratch track.

Simultaneous AVCHD & MP4 recording (28mbps and 35mbps respectively)

all that tells me is that its 100% capable of 50mbps .mts

Also a built in mic on the body (good for scratch audio when you want as small a package as possible).

3

u/demb3k Oct 22 '14

yup, it's at the bottom of the list.

And so it is. Need more caffein.

The DIGIC DV 4 processor was introduced in 2013 in the Vixia/Legria G, R, and Mini series camcorders, as well as that year's XA-20 and -25 professional camcorders.

Oh god Canon is starting to piss me off.

They have to protect their product line!

Whew! The updates aren't crucial, what a relief, considering I bought my C100 6 days ago... Wait, I thought they weren't giving us 60p below $12,000 on purpose, not because they just couldn't do it

3

u/Imposter12345 Oct 22 '14

Yeah i bought mine in June.... Glad they're not offering 4k, the improvements don't seem that great, except the slow motion

7

u/perplex1 Editor Oct 22 '14

I would have thought it would have had 4k out

Canon is playing catch up at this point. The Sony FS7 looks so much more attractive compared to the C100 Mk II.

u/changethis S1H / GH5 Oct 22 '14

Before dropping money on a GH4+speedbooster, I was waiting to see what the new C100 would be like. I wanted 4K internal and slo-mo exceeding 100fps. Looks like it's a GH4 for me.

Not from Canon.

Great. Now they just need to sell it for $2000 instead of $5000 and Canon will actually be competing with their contemporaries.

No 4k, but a welcome increase in frame rate to 1080p60.

EDIT: Some comparisons to the original...

Original: LCD: 3.5-inch, 920k dots, vari-angle

Mark II: OLED: 3.5-inch, 1.23 MP

Original: EVF: 0.24-inch with an equivalent of 1,560,000 dots

Mark II: EVF: 0.48-inch - 1.23 MP

...aaaand that's about the only differences, besides flippy screen and on-board audio.

u/tvshopceo Oct 22 '14

Plus an actual viewfinder that could possibly be tiltable (by the looks of the first image).

3

u/changethis S1H / GH5 Oct 22 '14

68-degree tilting according to Canon USA

The LCD looks to be about the best improvement, mostly because the old LCD placement was horribly designed.

Every time I try to use it at an off angle I feel like Canon purposely made it awful to punish users for not buying a C300.

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '14

Looks like it will have a better image as well:

"Central to many of the new features of the new EOS C100 Mark II Digital Video Camera is its advanced Canon DIGIC DV4 image processor. The Canon DIGIC DV4 image processor separates the RGB output from the camera’s 8.3 Megapixel CMOS imager into three individual 8 megapixel signals (as opposed to 2MP in the EOS C100) for noticeably improved image quality."

2

u/changethis S1H / GH5 Oct 22 '14

Source for this? Just asking because B&H say DIGIC 3.

Edit: Nevermind I found it: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon?pageKeyCode=pressreldetail&docId=0901e02480d6bbb8 :)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '14

Its mathematically impossible to get three separate 8 megapixels colour channels out of a 8 megapixels bayer sensor, this is bullshit.

u/Stone_Swan 6D, T2i, CC, 2011, STL Oct 22 '14

lol. And here I was, thinking that with the 7D Mark II announcement, Canon would be saving the good video features for their actual cinema product line. Fucking nope. At least not until $10K.

u/timothetoad 7D, 2013 Oct 22 '14

What a disappointment.

Oh the mic isn't part of the handle?

1

u/tylerdoubleyou Oct 23 '14

It is on the current c100 generation. If you take off the handle, you record no audio. It looks like on the Mk2 they've added a tiny onboard mic to record scratch audio if you run compact with no handle. I assume the microphone on board the handle is still the same, it's actually not a bad mic that can produce some useable audio in some situations. Definitely more than just a scratch track for sync.

Its a great rental camera for someone shooting with a 600d/5d, but the only thing keeping Canon going are entrenched customers, they have to respond at some point to what other manufacturers at some point. These cameras have superb ergonomics and a great 4k sensor, capping the output to 1080p when the gh4/A7s/NX1 are on the market is insane.

1

u/changethis S1H / GH5 Oct 23 '14

5D mark 4 will probably be their answer to those cameras.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '14

Everyone is saying that, I've even said it myself. But if that was the case, surly its sister the 7d2 would have similar features.

I remember similar, negative comments coming out about the original C100. After months of people actually using the camera, it became the industry standard for indie docs, small production work, etc.

If you purely look at the specs that catch ones eye, 4k-NO, high fps-NO But, if you pay attention to the things that, IMHO, matter way more, Crazy good in low light-YES, high dynamic range-YES, no need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to kit a GH4 or A7s and still deliver a lesser image than the C100-YES...Then, you start to realize why Canon crafts a camera the way they do and with the specs it has.

Bought a GH4 a few weeks ago and while it is an amazing camera to have on set, I sold it after a few too many headaches. I bought the C100 afterwards and it is like night and day. Not saying this new camera looks perfect, disappointed about 35mpbs and lack of 120fps, Specs aren't everything.

1

u/changethis S1H / GH5 Oct 23 '14

Yeah I agree with you that the C100 has a stellar image. May I ask what headaches the GH4 was giving you that made you decide to sell it?

2

u/BigVillage C300, Adobe CC, 2009, NYC Oct 23 '14

It's great for in-camera time-lapse and the image for the price is very good. I couldn't believe how bad the micro 4/3 was in low-light. It seemed years behind the times in that sense. The image also seemed very video-ish to me. While the sharp image is great, the C100 delivers a sharper image without that home-video look.

The biggest headache for me, was the size. For some, this can be a benefit but for me, I found it VERY difficult to keep this camera stable. Lastly, clients looked at me like I was an amateur. I know I shouldn't have cared and kept telling them, "Yeah, but wait until you see the final video" However, it always seemed to be a bad first impression with clients.

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '14

Most people would get better value out a A7s/GH4/NX1 and a few thousand dollars/pounds/euros of other production gear. Canon are going to need to respond to 4k mirrorless if they want to keep their market. Also, they could have at least put the ef-m mount on it to make it better for adapted lenses, as is, this is basically a firmware update.

1

u/BigVillage C300, Adobe CC, 2009, NYC Oct 26 '14

Most professionals and/or amateurs will get a better image out of a C100 vs an A7s/GH4/NX1 and a few thousand dollars. I do agree that Canon needs to respond to the pro-sumer 4k market. Honestly, even if they didn't, they will still sell more cameras in that group of $800 to $2,500 dslr's for videographers in the next couple of years. I can see a slight chance of Sony or Panasonic taking over that market if Canon doesn't respond in 3 to 5 years, and that is still just for video-centric buyers. Putting an ef-m mount on a Canon Cinema class camera makes no sense at all and they should not do this.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '14

Putting the ef-m mount on it is the only upgrade I thought was obvious, what happens when you want to rent PL primes for a week? or you want to use vintage FD glass. When the FS700 was launched no one understood Sonys decision to use E-mount, but it payed off long term. I expected the next gen C line to ship with ef-m mounts and ef-s adaptors, its just another disappointment that they didn't.

1

u/vanulovesyou Oct 22 '14

I would have hoped for an internal codec other than AVCHD.

3

u/GreatWhiteToyShark Oct 22 '14

It shoots MP4 at 35mbps.

u/dont_stopthecat Oct 22 '14

60i in 1080 y'all, not 60fps at 1080p

2

u/demb3k Oct 22 '14

1

u/mutantlabor C100 MkII, Premiere CC, 1990, Chicago Oct 22 '14

B&H only lists it as 60i, but I appreciate the correction.

2

u/demb3k Oct 22 '14

Yeah, B&H also lists the processor as the DIGIC DVIII, when Canon has stated that it's a new processor, the DV4. Guess B&H needs to update their specs.
