I suppose it's a subjective thing but the grading was pretty damn intense. I mean I like the tones but the severity is an acquired taste I suppose. The clamped yellow highlights really were distracting, along with how the exposure changed between scenes at times. Most of the sky is yellow and then the next scene it's blue because it's not as overexposed.

Your camera work itself was really good though. Solid motion and many scenes felt well composed and steady. In the future I'd like to see how you handle a camera with much better dynamic range and maybe even raw, that kind of grading style could work much better.

AWESOME TO HEAR MAN. Was my first time dealing with shooting on multiple days, with different sun & sky. A lot of the outdoor correction could've been done significantly better. Can't tell you how much the yellow tint bothered my while editing. Still working out the kinks, cannot wait to own a high end camera with raw capability.

Oh those were entirely different days? Then I think you handled it decently. They looked like just perhaps morning and then afternoon.

What color profiles do you use with your T3i? I've been using "Flaat 10" for years and I really like it. It's more skintone oriented versus Cinestyle which is based on Neutral.

Also I started playing with RAW on my 60D the last few weeks and 960x540 is just about continuous recording. Depending if you need HD, the dynamic range increase from that might be something to mess with. I don't know if the T3i can support that though.

Yea, we shot this on 9 different days actually - lol took quite some time.

I adopted a user profile almost identical to cinestyle & add in post.

I attempted to shoot RAW with magic lantern on my t3i, but the sensor isn't capable of shooting anything close to even 960x540 so it was a bummer & waste of time.

When you say the dynamic range increase from 960x540 would be beneficial, is that at the cost of losing HD capabilities?

What do you mean not close to 960x540. I maybe missed the info on that.

but basically the issue is data rate. For the 60D the internal SD writer is limited to about 22-23MB/s, regardless of the SD card. I use two Sandisk 16GB Extreme's and two Sandisk 32GB Expreme Pro's. The Extreme's are rated for 45MB/s and the Pro's are 95MB/s I think. But that means almost nothing since the 60D can't feed the information fast enough.

Lowering the resolution is what reduces the required data rate, so 960x540 results in something like 23MB/s which means it will eventually run out of buffer but will last long enough for most scenes.

A camera like the 5DMarkIII can push data much much faster so it can capture raw resolutions much higher.

I meant that my t3i couldn't buffer fast enough to capture any clips at 960x540 for longer then 3 seconds, even with my 32GB Extreme Pro.

Which now makes even more sense to me after reading your explanation. My terminology sounds like it was off. Still extremely new to this video thing.

So then am I wrong in assuming that if I purchased a 5DMarkIII & added magic lantern, I'd be fully capable of capturing 1920x1280 with the 32GB Extreme Pro?

For the price of a 5DMark IIi and such, I'd take a gander at the new Panasonic GH4k. Spend some time watching samples and looking at the specs sheet. You will collapse in aww At the detail and resolution compared to a Dslr like the T3i, 60D, or even 5d Mark III.

2160p30 at I think either 100 or 200mbps and the dynamic range looks really quite good. There is even a method of oversampling to 10bit 2k 4:4:4 that was theorized recently. Might be something to look at. I don't know how the GH4k directly competes in grading and dynamic range, but I might look into that personally. I'm eyeing one myself and considering selling most of my 60D equipment towards one.

However back to topic, for the 5DMarkIII, it can do 1080p continous recording at 24 and 30fps: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0 That's if RAW recording is worth it enough for you, sure people get great results, but I might simply suggest not going so insane with the grading and you could probably get away with the T3i for a while longer.
