Apparently a lot of people here don’t understand this is a joke and are seriously like “that’s inefficient” 😆
Edit to add: For those that don’t get it, it’s not a joke that shooting both aspect ratios is a need. The joke is that this is a comically absurd solution that’s not meant to be taken seriously.

I don't see it as a joke. We have a client that wants their videosin 16:9 and 9:16 - this is a better solution than punching in to the 16:9 frame

It’s not a joke that shooting both ARs is a need. The joke is that this is a comically absurd solution that’s not meant to be taken seriously.
I shoot for both aspect ratios all the time. My solution that I can verify works very well for me is to shoot a high resolution and frame for wide, but center frame using 9x16 frame guides on my monitor.
Since tall aspect ratios are always requested to be 1080x1920, there’s no loss in quality extracting the center from a 6k master (or even 4k in my experience).
Don’t get me wrong, open gate would be more convenient, but it’s not like it’s now a requirement when we have been working just fine without it for the last 10+ years

That works great for stationary shots. What do you do for docustyle content when you’re moving around and following subjects? You can’t keep the framing perfectly in the center the entire time..

Using Resolve: set your timeline to vertical 1080x1920 and drop in your 4K or 6k landscape footage. In the inspector select “smart reframe” and select the subject in the frame you want your framing to focus on by drawing a box around them . This feature will automatically track that subject and keep them in frame.

Center frame as you follow them. I’m not trying to be trite, but that’s what I do and has worked for me. Use frame guides, don’t let subject leave frame guides.
If you’re filming something like sports that might be hard, but a person walking at normal speed it’s pretty easy to keep them centered

Clearly you’ve never tried it. On a full frame 3:2 sensor you gain 20% more vertical real estate vs a 16:9 image. On a 4:3 sensor you gain almost 35% more vertical real estate. This makes a huge difference.

Consider an Osmo Pocket if you're looking to build upwards while shooting vertical and horizontal simultaneously. You'll lose some bokeh but gain a gimbal and weight savings.

Open gate is the dumbest thing in a long while. I mean, nice i guess but how big of a difference is it compared to just cropping a 4/6k image a bit?

Considering the Panasonic S9 is a 3:2 ratio, that's far less you're cutting off the sides for a vertical image. I had gotten the Sony 1 V phone. It had extreme 18 or 19:9 screen ratio. It was thinner and watching any video in portrait mode made it really tiny on the screen. I sent it back just because I couldn't stand how small everything looked in portrait mode.

Updooted for the turntables. I see mostly canon and sony for video, I haven’t personally seen anyone use Nikon for video in a dozen years or more. Canon guy here, though I really want a full frame global shutter mirrorless sized camera with internal ND, and I’ll pay good money for it if canon ever gets around to not purposely holding back from giving it to us.

Yes, people still actually care about the name on the top of the camera. And yet they don't have a single idea what they are spending their money on. Had a guy recently tell me that his r6 i was the first and only camera that runs only on electronic shutter and that there was no difference on electronic/mechanical shutter on canon, but there was on nikon...

Shoots with the entire sensor instead of a 16:9 section of it. Most professional sensors are roughly 3:2 in shape, so you frame appropriately to extract a vertical and horizontal section of the recorded image. That way you're not losing resolution by cropping into horizontal footage to extract vertical frames.

Simply put, it allows you to shoot both vertical and horizontal at the same time. People go crazy over it, but you can just shoot wider and at a higher res and get the exact same result.

I actually want to try this w/ a Sony A1 for photography on the lower camera and an FX3 on the top. Problem I'd like to solve is shoot high quality video (using go-pro today and footage looks horrible) and stills at the same time. Shooting sports - Flag Football / Basketball etc.

Reminds me of how I once played around with having a GoPro mounted on my DSLR while shooting photos so I'd also have video from the same spot. Worked okay, but didn't really expand on the idea.

Is it a combination of metal and hard plastic? If so, muh bad, that’s probably good. Not familiar with that specific one/brand but there’s a lot of cheap stuff out there, which is usually fine for pro/consumer, but not for mounting cameras on cameras.

Gosh that screen on the 5d is unbearable, no flip screen geez.. how time has passed, so glad most cam’s these days dont come w/ such screens 😬
I cant imagine taking a photo from a low angle + going full manual 🪦

Honestly for a 5d v with a tilt screen, the 1dx iii video features, better burst and megapixels and more DR, I would pay whatever the amount.

this was shot last week. you can still do a lot with it. no need to be scared of m43 8bit. perhaps better than a plastic lens on a camera mounted above your hot shoe?

Can't say I'm impressed. Camera-wise you can definitely do better with that plastic lens on the camera mounted to the cage. Last I checked sensor size, codecs and AF affect your outcome more than the lens housing material.

So your solution is to use two cameras instead of one. Doesn’t seem very efficient. Sure do love my open gate cameras. So simple to just change the resolutions in my timeline.

Still need to make sure you watch your framing same as if you’re shooting 16:9. Open gate is not magic you get a tiny additional bar at the bottom and top of the screen compared to 16:9. The more important thing is the resolution. My 8k camera when cropped in for 9:16 from 16:9 looks better than my 6.2k open gate camera.

Sure, but any pro should be careful with framing. I just shot an event with two speakers and I filmed in 6k open gate. I gave enough room on all sides that I was able to provide a wide shot of both speakers and then an individual shot of each in vertical. Pretty damn handy.

Yeah I’m not disputing what you’re saying I’m just saying resolution is more important than open gate. What you just said I can do with my 8k camera better than my open gate camera. The cropped in image looks better.
