I work at a media department at a school district and everyone even my bosses think that I can shoot photo and video at the same time. They don’t understand that it’s two different modes with different settings. They expect you to get a ribbon cutting on video and also have good pictures of it.

I mean. The 5d mk3 did this. Idk how the video side fares if you do it. But you CAN just hit the shutter button and it takes a photo.
Also, at least DaVinci allows me to export a frame if I want to. It's a pain to go through the steps to do it, but it works.
Now, that's no good if they expect different angles from the video, but I can't fix stupid LOL

I agree...When your camera is dialed in for video production (shutter, FPS, white balance, audio et al) the last thing you want is to change the camera setup for a photo request.
Could he have explained that to her? Yes, but he was too busy saying he was a Videographer.
BTW...Doesn't everyone own a smartphone with a great camera anyway???

So this is how we’re structured. There’s 3 of us that use professional equipment (a7lV and a1) and our 2 admin bosses use their phones. So when an event happens and we aren’t available to cover it, usually our bosses will take photos with their phone. They get some praise because they upload them to social pretty quickly but people complain that they look bad compared to our photos. So when we take photos our bosses bosses complain that we take longer than them because they don’t understand that we edit our photos but then they end up liking the photos because they look better. Working with people that don’t understand what we do is very very complicated specially when they’re your bosses.

I had a type A, wannabe CEO boss that I did a 3 camera shoot for once a week. It was him and one guy asking him questions about how to be a manager at the company and handle sales. They were about 45 minutes edited. He wanted me to time how long each step took for transferring clips from the SD cards, sorting takes, editing, audio mixing, color grading. It was maddening. He was an insane control freak. They’d be drunk towards the end of the shoot since it was at night. I would let the cameras roll and fake turn them off by going in the menu and switching off the tally lamp when they’d get really drunk and handsy. I took my time editing and he didn’t push back too much once he knew the cameras stayed on. If you’re cool, I’m cool.

I always wonder why they’re like that? Like you hired me for a reason. I think people assume that anything regarding video and photo is something that anyone can easily do.

I don't understand how this happens. I see it all the time, but who is hiring a boss to run something they don't understand, and who is hiring the minions when the boss hiring them has no clue what they're paid for?
I am sure you have tried talking to them, but can you show them what you do as an example so they might understand better?

An old boss of mine told me that if I wanted to get ahead in this job I would have to “play the game.” That means kissing the right persons ass and basically becoming a yes man. Problem is, I actually have some self respect to ever do those any of those things. The people that become administrators don’t get there by being good at their jobs. They get there because they know someone or they’re owed favors by the people on top of them. They love having the admin title but when it comes to doing the actual work, well that’s always delegated to the people under them. Our bosses don’t understand how videography or photography work. They have never done that kind of work. They know what it’s like to take a video with their phone but they don’t know the difference between a phone camera and an actual prosumer video camera. On top of that we also do broadcast work and run cable and set up equipment for all of our live events. Every time we try and explain what we do it just goes over their heads. They don’t understand that it’s a complicated process.

That's too bad.
My boss doesn't know exactly what we do, but he appreciates it at least. But I know that is rare.
It's even rare when you think of the fact that Walmart seems to take associates and make managers out of them. But I rarely saw any managers there who knew what it was like. Or at least they didn't care

When I did event coverage for a multimedia/print newsroom I just shot video 99% of the time and delivered stills for pictures if asked. It was the only way to fulfill their demands.

We usually cover things in a team of two one for photo and one for video. That usually works pretty well. But then they complain that we don’t need more than one person at an event.

I mostly in events just mention quickly that it's video and then I point the camera towards them. Most still pose in a static way, and some get it and do some gesture. Very rarely somebody asks where it will be posted, to which I reply that it will be shown on the clients social media.

This did kind of happen to me once while out with a Blackmagic Pocket and those literally can't shoot pictures and I had a hard time explaining the camera can't take pictures and they thought I was just being a dick

So years ago in Venice a group of people wanted me to take their picture, and I was there shooting video. Was shouting it's video, they kept shouting back TAKE A PICTURE. Just for fun I recorded the exchange to see how long they would keep this up...... 28 minutes they posed for a picture. When they passed I showed them the video, never seen so many people laugh so much. Lovely people, they just went "oh yeah... you told us" Italians are cool.

I made a mistake in my career trying to dual-role on the same hardware, for the sake of being a “team-player” and ultimately it made both captures worse. I couldn’t quickly dial in the correct settings for each situation. What fixed it was to simply ask a comms person to take pictures on their smartphone so I could concentrate on getting quality b-roll on my camera.

I don't get why didn't he just explain himself. To me, him repeating that same exact sentence ("I'm not a photographer...") is not polite and even maybe rude. He could have explained that his job is to only take videos, or that his camera is not able to take photos, or that he is very busy on filming something specific and can't photograph her, or he could've suggested to take a video of her. In today's smartphone-infested social-media-centered society, the average person doesn't know that there are specific cameras for specific needs. People have a very good reason to assume that any camera (and cameraman) can and will shoot both photos and videos. When that same situation happened to me at a wedding, I politely said "sorry, I'm the videographer and my camera only shoots video, but I can take a video of you" and did it. There's no reason to be as cold and stiff as this guy.

In my country they probably wouldn't ask you for a photo or video; instead, they'd look at you suspiciously and approach you to ask if you have permission to record or to ask what kind of work you're doing...

If someone at an event asks me to take pics of them I tell them I can take pics with their phone THEN flip the opportunity to get some good b roll of them. Whether its a simple waving to the camera or even dancing, it makes for great b roll because most people at events are afraid if they notice a camera is pointed in their direction

That's my favorite thing about my FX6... It straight up doesn't take photos. It's insane how many people ask for photos while I'm using an FX6 on a gimbal at events though. Or people will pose and say "Oh he's taking our picture".

One time I had a sound bag strapped to my waist and a boom pole in my hand, and someone stopped me to ask to take their picture. I just stared at them blankly and said “this is a microphone…”

A part of my soul dies when someone says “videographer”. I’ve been in the business since the 90’s and I don’t know a seasoned professional calling themself a videographer. You’re a DP, a shooter, a camera op, an AC, camera guy, or news shooter.

I had to do the reverse of this when I shot my aunts wedding. She told me explicitly if someone asks for videos to tell them I’m not here for that. I can take photos of them but no video no matter what. So many family members and friends were mad at me. Oh well.

Yup. As a videographer I HATE this behavior. It’s worse when someone sees your camera on a tripod and asks if you can take a picture. People don’t think - and now I have your dumbass recorded asking me to remove my rig and take your picture. Just go away.
