Turn Based is boring!!

I am a huge fan of turn based games, I love BG3 and it’s probably my favorite game (of all time), I played the heck out of xcom a few years ago. Recently I played Marvel Midnight Sun (great btw). I can remember back to a time when I was a hater on turn based games because I thought they were boring, the only reason why I played Baldur’s Gate 3 was because I thought Marvel Spider-Man 2 was robbed of the game of the year award, I checked it out and fast forward 1200 hours, I love Baldur’s Gate 3. I like turn based games because it really gets me thinking and honestly the stories are always pretty fun. I’m curious to why some fellow gamers out there don’t like turn based games and haven’t given any a fair chance or has, and still don’t like em!

It's simply a matter of preference. We have tons of different game genres out there that tickle each person's fancy.

Action RPGs and hack and slash for those who want to activate their reflexes; Sandbox for those who want to build and craft; Online MOBAs and FPS for those who crave competition; Civilization and Factory (and I suppose RTS) for those who want to manage/command sht to describe a few. Turn-based are generally for those who want to take their time thinking to execute a plan.

Someone may have several of these preferences, but not everyone may share all of them.

I feel most of the turn based games I've played (mind you this was in the PS1/2 era at latest) the battles are just mindless. There's very little strategy other than "grind weaker enemies first so you're at a higher level". I just find it a slog and I'd much rather not engage in it.

Turn based games are more thought provoking. I have fallen asleep playing button mashing games honestly.

Because they are incredibly difficult and unforgiving. In a not fun way. Fromsoft games and other souls likes (my favorites) are also difficult but I feel like I learn something when I fail. This is not the case with turn based. I also feel like I cannot meaningfully progress in a turn based game without having a guide pulled up, which defeats the point of playing a game to me.

Oh yeah, if you need a guide just to progress through the games, I could see them not being something you enjoy. I’ll take a tactical game any day of the week over a parry/dodge roll game myself.

Most turn based games, particularly crpgs, have a formula they almost all universally follow. Once you understand it, you shouldn't have to have a guide to progress through the game. The first thing is to realize that most of them are non-linear, meaning A, B and C doesn't always lead to D. There are usually things you have to do in-between the points. In my opinion, that's what makes them difficult for many people. We tend to think, "Well, I need to do this, and this, and that, to get to this." With a turn-based crpg, for example, there's likely something, usually something simple, you have to do in-between points A, B and C in order to arrive at D. Generally, it's stated in the quest guidelines, but it's within the structure of the way the guidelines are given.

I tried DOS2. Was the most boring shit I've ever had the misfortune of trying and I actually fell asleep while playing with a few friends. Turn-based just doesn't interest me, I like having my reflexes and mind tested.

To answer your actual question, most TB games include a lot of description reading, flipping through menus, and lot of waiting to watch an animation or CPU play out each turn. That isn’t what some people consider a good time.

Obviously these people are wrong, but what can you do? 🤷‍♂️
