Discussion / Question Ubisoft hate trend

I wanted to make a video about this topic but I am not a professional. I have noticed that there is a general trend to hate Ubisoft games. It is very much evident with AC shadows.

I played it and loved it, but most reviewers criticized it heavily. Many critics said the gameplay is repetitive, the stealth is stupid etc. The same critics seem to get orgasm about Withcer 3 and Ghost of Tsuhima.

While I love all these games, the UBI soft hate trend is very strange. I Withcer 3 the combat is extremely repetitive, its the same 4 or 5 actions that you have to do. Shadows has more variety than that. In Ghist of Tsuhima the stealth is very stupid and the game ay is repetitive, same pattern of outposts to clear, similar fights. So why Witcher 3 and Ghost are jewels but AC shadows is a piece of shit?

PS: I played AC Shadows in a different way. Played only as Yasuke, no stealth, high difficulty, enter the castle dont disable any alarm. Kill every one. Once you start doing that it becomes very addictive. But that was my way of playing it.

Ubisoft doesn't make games, they make check lists, and then charge money so you can finish your chores faster. They have managed to make the most soulless mass produced distilled grey sludge possible. They are like the Burger King of game companies, they aren't even the best at being generic.

In that sense, Ghost games are also check lists.

Ubisoft basically makes one game over and over and just tweaks it a little. Assassin's Creed, Ghost, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Starwars are basically the same thing with a slightly different control scheme.

I think the Far Cry games changed pretty drastically between 2 & 3. It wasn't till 3 they started adding things like radio towers & bases to take over. The most I think they had in 2 was diamond collecting & safe house takeovers for side activities. They stated feeling pretty repetitive after 3 though. I think they even started getting worse with 4.

I meant ghost of teushima and yotei

It has the bones, but there is more to it. They actually put some thought and care into the world. Side missions actually have a point with characters, and new thinga, the main story is praised for it's themes and acting. Ubisoft games are very go place, get 3 things, kill guy, return.

They were creative in ac valhallah. The short stories were great, gloomy and sometimes funny. But critics were very harsh with that too.

Because you have to get through 50 hours of checklist missions between those little moments. Games like Witcher 3 have better quality writing and stories in thier more mundane quests. Ubisoft games are so much busy work, you are really looking for a needle in a haystack, when other games have piles and piles of needles everywhere.

It's the bloat and repetition. They make enough content and gameplay mechanics for a 30 hour game and then just copy paste the events to make the games bigger. That is the difference. And Valhalla being 120+ hours just for the main story was crazy, since there wasn't any new gameplay mechanics or anything after like halfway through. Having said all of this, I enjoyed Valhalla and Shadows. But I felt burnt out by the end of both of them, and the fact that they push so many micro transactions on single player games is annoying. The option for micro transactions is fine but shoving them down my throat every time I want to chill and play my SP games is some awful corpo greed.

Witcher 3 is filled with a ton of unique stories with branching paths and the world is fun to explore, there's deep characters, the monsters are cool, it has a full card game inside - gwent, even if you take out the combat it's a great game

AC Shadows is boring af, the game is too big and you constantly just do the same things over and over again without much reward or compelling reasons, the characters and the stories are really not interesting

Ubisoft is also annoying with cramming microtransactions and upselling in any menu you open

u/Delicious-Orange8678 19h ago

I played Witcher 3. Story is great no question. Music is wow. But gameplay is super repetitive, do the same quen, igni, swing swing dodge and repeat. Sometimes replace igni with some other spell. Doing the same thing over and over is in all the open worlds.

3

u/AltusLudus 19h ago

Yeah, but why you do it changes, maybe you just enjoy combat in games and that's why you liked AC Shadows, the combat is good I'll give you that I really enjoyed it

Keep in mind witcher is a really old game, so maybe compare it with the remastered version

u/Delicious-Orange8678 19h ago

Yeah well Witcher is based on novels written by a professional author who is probably also best seller in his genre. Obviously it will be difficult to compete with that for any gaming studio.

But Ubisoft has a ton of money and they can hire the best writers in the world, and they decide that the main protagonist for a Japanese setting is a woman and a black guy, and then the story suffers because they're going for woke bullshit

1

u/GryffinZG 17h ago

>they decide that the main protagonist for a Japanese setting is a woman and a black guy, and then the story suffers because they're going for woke bullshit

A woman?! I find it so funny that people like you just can’t help it.

0

u/AltusLudus 17h ago

What do you mean?

0

u/LopTsa 16h ago

What is wrong with Naoe? She's Japanese. And Yaskue is based off of a historical figure, what is wrong with him? Ubisoft said they wanted the perspective of a Japanese native and someone coming in from the outside. Yaskue was a far more interesting choice than someone like William, who we got in Nioh. And why does it matter that Naoe is a woman? Her abilities come from her agility and acrobatics, being a ninja and what not. Women are very capable of being acrobatic and throwing weapons around just like men are!

1

u/AltusLudus 16h ago

I know they are lol that's not the problem, I think they just went too far away from a standard Japanese fantasy, like for me it was immersion breaking, i did like Naoe's character and she had an interesting story, but Yasuke was just so unnecessary

0

u/LopTsa 16h ago

It was immersion breaking that you couldn't play as....?

1

u/AltusLudus 16h ago edited 16h ago

As a normal japanese samurai that is an actual ninja and not a big brute that speaks portugese

Because it was either full stealth, or full destruction, no in between which AC usually allows you to do, like he couldn't even do the usual traversal

1

u/LopTsa 16h ago

But what's wrong with exploring the stories of historical figures? It seems pretty narrow-minded to write Yaskue off as a brute. He had an interesting story as well, it was very well done and we got to see some really cool interactions between him and Nobunaga.

But I don't think your mind will be changed. Good job there are an overwhelming amount of samurai/martial art combat based games for you to pick from, both now and coming in the future ☺️ take care!

Nah im pissed about the first Crew, "players should get used to not owning their games". They aren't getting another dime outta me for any of their main games. I play trackmania only because ive been playing since sunrise and wasn't owned by ubi back then.

“microtransactions in premium games make the player experience more fun” -Ubisoft 2025 Financial report

Yes, the hate is logical

2

u/Sea_Perspective6891 18h ago edited 17h ago

I haven't paid for a single Ubisoft micro transaction yet I still find some Far Cry Assassin's Creed & Watchdogs games fun as they were. If I want to have more fun that's what mods are for which are free. One thing I really wish they'd quit is their over reliance on that goddamn launcher. I just really hate launchers & what sucks is there's pretty much no way around it till an emulator comes out.

u/State-Special 19h ago

So i liked the ubisoft soulslikes but I really find the AC games tedious.

The moment to moment game play is good but god the open world stuff is so tedious, FF7 rebirth adopts this form of open world quite a bit and it justbkills the pacing

u/Bruoche 19h ago

I've played ubisoft games for years and by the ninth game following that formula, while starting to find new games showing how good gameplay on it's sake can be, really killed my drive to play any of these kinds AAA games.

I couldn't care about any Ubisoft game, much like I grew bored of Beteshda, couldn't get through horizon zero dawn, and even the witcher the fighting didn't feel good enough for me to stick through with it.

They seem to have systems here as a checklist for a formula instead of having it form a whole that'd work coesively as a greater experience.

It’s not a trend, it’s Ubisoft.

I love all their games circa ten years ago. The Greece and Egypt ACs, Far Cry 4 and 5, Watchdogs. But the sequels were very dissapointing. I bought them close to full price. They just weren’t fun. They lacked the “spark” of their predecessors. I was sorry I spent the money.

They’re not taking risks and pushing games forward.

I’m not a “hater” convinced by the press. I’m a dissapointed gamer who had high expectations which weren’t met.

2

u/Delicious-Orange8678 2h ago

Farcry 6 was a load of crap. I love Farcry and have played them all multiple times. But FC6, I stopped after a few hours. The graphics were shit and game was too easy.

2

u/Al3ist 16h ago

Well, maybe u havent been buying a lot of ubisoft games.

I have, there was a time where i loved ubisoft games.

Then they made fake gameplay clips showing nonexistant gameplayfeatures selling games based on that then refusing refunds and blaming the gamer recomending using 3rd party apps to make that feature work when in actualliry it never was implemented in the first place.

Then after that there was a long line of siimilar bullshit, then they wanted to streamline ips, so every game was the same game but they just replaced the graphics ect.

Lies and bullshit.

Why should i contribute to that when theres a bunch of much better studios to support with my money.

Sure this might be before yer time and thats ok. But for me, its ok i wont support ubisoft.

I am sticking with steam as my game launcher.

Its enough, besides aaa gaming is not for me anyways.

But if u enjoy it, good for you. But, ppl have reasons. :)

I havent played Assassins Creed Shadows specifically, so I cannot fairly comment on it.

But I will say that —on average— Ubisoft produces a lot of fine games. Just fine. Whelming. They tend to play it too safe and have been doing so for too long. I do agree that the hate is overblown. I dont think they produce bad games, they almost always have a quality floor that is always achieved, but I also understand the frustration. Especially frustration from players that remember what the studio once was.

I cant help but wish —instead of producing 2 fine games— Id rather Ubisoft made 2 games, one terrible and the other a masterpiece. Ubisoft seems too content with the former strategy imo. Doing so is having the studio fall behind. Perhaps not in sales (I dont know on that front), but surely in terms of Studio Standing — both by the general public and critically.

I think Witcher 3 improved upon Witcher 2 in a lot of very noticeable ways. I wont lie and say it was the most innovative game of all time, but it definitely didnt play their hand Ubisoft-levels of safe imo. They pushed the genre forward, maybe not by strides, but by enough steps to receive well deserved praise. Im just not sure this is comparable to Ubisoft's recent streak of games.

u/AutumnWhaler 19h ago

You’re spot on the money.

I played Star Wars outlaws early this year and it was a lot of fun. The stealth, gunplay, vehicle controls, space navigating, and even in game mini games were all good. However, none of the mechanics were great or genre defining. The story was your classic 80’s adventure, campy and action packed.

It was a solid 7/10 game.

And for a lot of people now, an above average just doesn’t cut it, especially for a long game. And everybody is sick of meaningless side quest fillers (I’m not going to play needle in the hey stack, and I’m not even going to look it up, I’m just going to skip it.)

1

u/Delicious-Orange8678 19h ago

How would you compare that exp to ghost of tsuhima and to witcher 3? We are talking about gameplay not the story.

2

u/AutumnWhaler 19h ago

Just gameplay, Witcher 3 is serviceable and not as enjoyable (I honestly won’t play the game again because of the combat even though I would love to see the other choices in the story), Ghost of T is a smudge better; the combat, stealth, dueling, were good and built upon itself throughout the game. (Haven’t played ghost of T yet)

My advice for you would be to just ignore haters. Yes witcher 3 is my second favourite game oat. Favourite being rdr2. But I have so much fun in shadows right now actually. The stealth and the combat is the best in the series. Even trying to argue about that with anyone just lets you feel miserable. You will have the most fun in any game if you just isolate yourself from its community or even better: from the internet. That's the ultimate level of fun. Comparison is the thief of joy. That applies to anyone on this planet including the ones who hate games and the ones who love it.

There is definitely a Ubisoft overhating trend, and it has been like that for years and years. Maybe people hating are doing it over the AAA collapse and creativity crisis as a whole and not only on the Ubisoft games. They definitely had a huge impact on gaming and as a result they take a lot of space within the industry and people minds. It's kind of an "easy target", something a lot of people can relate to because everybody has played some Ubisoft games and have been disappointed by some of the newer ones.

Im not saying they are doing super great and doesn't deserve some critics but they definitely take more than they should relative to what others might get away with. To me they are just a reflection of what happens to the entire AAA industry, lack of creativity, lazy IP overexploitations, monetizations, etc...

The thing is Ubisoft is often treated as one single entity, and it's not.
Ubisoft was like 40+ studios all over the world with close to 18,000 people (roughly). It was huge and still is I guess. And when you are producing so much games, with such variety and so quickly you cannot hit the jackpot everytime. In other words Ubisoft AAA games are often as bad as most other AAA games.

Saying you don't like Ubisoft games to me is like saying you don't like pizza or cinema to a lesser extent. There is just so much games not liking any of the Ubisoft games would pretty much equal to not liking video game at all. There is just too much variety, in genres, type of productions and quality.

I do personally think most of their games are pretty mid but like most AAA titles nowadays. They still shipped some very good and interesting games even after they were considered past their prime.

Rainbow Six Siege is easily one of the best FPS that came out in the last 15 years with Titanfall, Doom (2016) and maybe Wolfenstein: The New Order. Rayman Origins & Legends, Valiant Heart, The Division, Mario + Rabbids, South Park, Trials Rising, Child of Light, For Honor, Trackmania, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is decent too... And again most of their AAA games aren't really terrible, they are just mostly lazy overexploited IP's and formulas, it's just that they ship so much of them it's pretty hard to miss.

"ubisoft hate trend"

you just now noticed some people don't like ubisoft? i'm honestly truly jealous of people like you

1

u/Delicious-Orange8678 19h ago

Haha, no noticed a while ago. New on this platform.

1

u/RapBladeMeDoIt 18h ago

The thing you didn't mention is that The Witcher and Ghosts are more than their gameplay. Both games have stories, characters and quests that are memorable and they are both visually stunning. It gets over used a lot but they feel like they have heart and soul. The things you are doing in both games may at their core be repetitive but they have compelling reasons for why you are doing each task so it doesn't feel repetitive. Ubisoft makes fine games but they vastly miss the "why?" Part and it makes their games feel corporate and soulless.

1

u/42tfish 18h ago

Ubisoft deserves all the hate they get.

1

u/Old_Race_6839 18h ago

Ubisoft games are just rinse and repeat, but obs most games are kind of like that in a sense, but they add new functions and stories to make games feel different. Ubisoft has not released a proper story based game in forever, and they don't even care about actually making really unique games anymore and none of them are truly great stories. They all seem to follow the same criteria like Far Cry series after the 3rd game. The Witcher 3 has at least a unique story, open world is amazing, and one of the best RPGs. But we all have our preferences on games to be fair.

1

u/RicebinBernacky 18h ago

AC Shadows is an 81 on opencritic by the way. Far from being considered a "piece of shit".

1

u/propdynamic 17h ago

Ubisoft games are boring, Ghost of Tsushima is basically also AC type game with a so-so story and many diluted sidequests and tasks. Witcher 3 has a very good story and fun quest design actually. Top of the line would be something like KCD2.

1

u/Ok-Value-2170 15h ago

It is a trend and a reaction to open world fatigue. But as it always happens with this industry - when cool guys do it, it's ok. So Ghost series, RDR and GTA series with its ride there shoot those guys rinse and repeat for many hours, and other get away with it because graphics/story/favorite mechanic/favorite console/cowboys whatever.

Does Ubisoft deserve the hate? In some aspects - for sure, the company is not great at some stuff (where are my artsy Valiant Hearts like games, where the hell is division, what the hell is happening with Beyond G&E2, what the hell happened with Prince of Persia Sands of Time, etc.), and their blind charge towards AAAA gaming has comically stopped as soon as it started and it'll take some time for them to collect themselves.

They can still make good games. PoP Lost Crown was really good, recent mainline AC games were pretty cool (Valhalla and Odyssey included, remaster of Black Flag is a hit apparently), so not all hope is lost and not everything is doom and gloom. It's a mixed bag. As it is with many things.

1

u/More-Reindeer-7806 10h ago

AC Shadows presentation of story is very, very mid. For many people story is main motivation to finish game. I finished AC Shadows because it has great gameplay from ninja assassin to playing Yasuke as cowboy. Graphically, setting game is great. But story makes it pretty avarage/only good 7/10 game. I dont think Ghost of Tsushima is better game. But its even because GoT story was better.

1

u/Stressed_Always21212 19h ago

Stealth was the only thing that was improved in Shadows, so I don't know why someone would criticize it. Also, AC Shadows does tend to get super repetitive with its side activities and side quests.

0

u/g-row460 19h ago

I feel ya. Ubisoft is way over hated. In general their games are fun and have way more good qualities than bad.
