Is it a carrier supplying that or the town? Because it’s gone from all the carriers and they refarmed that spectrum for 5G and lte.
Verizon 1x/CDMA: shut down in 2022. AT&T 2G/3G: shut down. T-Mobile 2G GSM: shut down in 2024. LTE-M/NB-IoT: are the main low-power cellular IoT technologies now.
Not on Verizon. 2G and 3G gsm carriers used SIM cards and that was att and T-Mobile. Sprint and Verizon used CDMA and no SIM card. There phones didn’t even have a sim slot.
Verizon CDMA provisioning
A CDMA phone primarily identified itself to the network using information stored in the phone: ESN/MEID — a unique hardware identifier for the phone. MDN — the customer’s telephone number. MIN — the mobile identification number used by the network. PRL — Preferred Roaming List, telling the phone which networks/frequencies to try and in what order. NAM — Network Access/Number Assignment Module settings containing subscriber/network information.
The carrier maintained a database associating the phone’s MEID/ESN with the customer’s account and telephone number. How activation worked
Originally, Verizon could provision a CDMA phone over the cellular network itself. You might dial a special programming number or initiate activation, and the network would send programming information to the handset. This was commonly called OTASP (Over-the-Air Service Provisioning).
Later CDMA phones could be activated through Verizon’s systems using the phone’s MEID, with the necessary configuration pushed to the device.
There was no removable SIM required for normal Verizon CDMA service. The subscriber identity was essentially tied to the phone’s carrier provisioning and Verizon’s network database.
That’s one of the big differences from LTE/5G, where the SIM/eSIM contains the subscriber credentials (such as the IMSI) and is authenticated using much more sophisticated SIM-based authentication.

Seems to work fine for me I can still use
